People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including Executive Financial Planning and Butzel Long

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Adam Kulesza, a vice president at Brighton-based Executive Financial Planning, has earned the Certified Financial Planner certification from the CFP Board of Standards. To earn the designation, Kulesza completed a comprehensive course of study approved by the CFP board and passed a two-day, 10-hour examination. The designation means Kulesza possesses experience in the financial planning process and has agreed to a stringent and strict code of professional conduct.

• Forty-three Butzel Long attorneys were recently named to the 2010 Michigan Super Lawyers list, and four Butzel Long attorneys were named Michigan Rising Stars 2010. Among the Butzel Long attorneys to earn these honors were several from the law firm’s Ann Arbor office. Mark W. Jane, who practices in the area of employee benefits/ERISA at Butzel Long’s Ann Arbor office, was named a Michigan Rising Star. Making the Super Lawyers list were Ann Arbor-based attorneys Robert A. Boonin, employment and labor; J. Michael Huget, intellectual property litigation; George E. Kuehn, business/corporate; Leonard M. Niehoff, first amendment/media advertising; and James E. Stewart, intellectual property.

• The Charles Reinhart Co., based in Ann Arbor, recognized members of the 2010 President’s Club on Oct. 28 at Pacific Rim by Kana in downtown Ann Arbor. To qualify for the President’s Club, an agent must close 18 or more transactions per year, which is more than 2.5 times the national average. • NanoBio Corp. company founder and CEO James R. Baker Jr. participated in the sixth annual Grand Challenges in Global Health Meeting, from Oct. 25 to 27 in Seattle, presenting data illustrating the potential of the company’s nanoemulsion-based needle-free intranasal vaccine platform. GCGH supports research projects that aim to achieve scientific breakthroughs needed to prevent, treat, and cure diseases of the developing world. Earlier this year, NanoBio presented Phase 1 clinical data demonstrating that the company’s nanoemulsion-adjuvanted intranasal flu vaccine, NB-1008, is safe, well tolerated and elicits immune responses following a single intranasal vaccination. NanoBio’s headquarters and laboratory facilities are located in Ann Arbor.

• The winners of the TiE20 Midwest Industry Awards were recently announced, and the list includes 11 companies from the Ann Arbor region. Selected from more than 1,000 nominated companies, the winners represent the most enterprising startup companies in four focus segments: Internet, Media, Mobile and Software. The winners were honored with awards of excellence at TiECon 2010 on Oct. 29, at The Henry Ford in Dearborn. TiE20 Winners 2010 in the Internet Category included BodegaBid and Ergun Technologies/OwnPos, both based in Ann Arbor. In the Media Category, DSLMi of Ann Arbor was among the winners. In the Software Category, three winners were from Ann Arbor: ERT Systems LLC, OntoMed LLC and Shepherd Intelligent Systems.

• Nominations for the 2011 ATHENA Award were open as of Nov. 1 and must be received by Dec. 17. The ATHENA Award is presented annually by chambers of commerce, women's organizations and universities. The Women's Council of Washtenaw County is the Ann Arbor region's local ATHENA Award host. The Women's Council invites local businesses to consider being a sponsor and supporting the award program. • Dr. Seth Warschausky of Ann Arbor was recently appointed to United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan’s board of directors. Warschausky is an associate professor for the University of Michigan’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He founded the Adaptive Cognitive Assessment Laboratory and has been the principal investigator on grants for the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Education to study the neuropsychology of cerebral palsy. UCP Michigan is a statewide association that promotes the productivity, independence and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

• Two businesses -- Zingerman's Delicatessen and New Eagle LLC -- have announced expansions in the Ann Arbor area. Zingerman’s Delicatessen was awarded tax credits and New Eagle LLC announced a Technology Collaboration credit with Powertrain Integration LLC to help them expand in the region. Zingerman’s Brownfield Michigan Business Tax credit award is valued at $1.1 million and Madison Heights-based Powertrain Integration, LLC’s Technology Collaboration Credit is valued at $300,000 based on a $2 million investment in New Eagle LLC. The tax credits were awarded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the State of Michigan. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation predicts that Zingerman’s expansion will create 65 new jobs. Powertrain Integration is expected to generate 26 new jobs and New Eagle 15.

• Ann Arbor SPARK, the regional economic growth nonprofit, recently added Bill Mayer as leader of its business accelerator team. In his new role, Mayer will oversee the organization's efforts to help businesses in the region grow.

• Mass Times has recently selected Ann Arbor-based Online Tech as Mass Times' managed data center partner. The Mass Times ministry, based in Boston, manages www.masstimes.org, a multi-language website that provides locations and worship times for more than 110,000 churches worldwide. Catholics who are outside of their diocesan boundaries are able to search for mass times and map locations using the Internet and wireless devices. Mass Times also colocates their equipment in Online Tech’s data centers and uses Online Tech’s managed services to monitor and manage it.

• Best Lawyers, the oldest peer-review publication in the legal profession, has named Philip Green as the “Ann Arbor Best Lawyers Labor and Employment Lawyer of the Year” for 2011. Green is partnered in his law firm with his wife, Christine Green. Their firm, Green and Green, P.C., has been listed in Best Lawyers and Michigan Superlawyers for several years. After more than a quarter of a century in publication, Best Lawyers is designating “Lawyers of the Year” in high-profile legal specialties in large legal communities. Only a single lawyer in each specialty in each community is being honored as the “Lawyer of the Year.”

• Michigan Radio, the public radio service of the University of Michigan, exceeded the station’s goal of $915,000 during the station's fall membership drive Oct. 20 through 27, generating more than 8800 pledges from donors across southern Michigan and northern Ohio. The amount raised was a record for the station, even though Michigan Radio continued efforts to reduce the amount of on-air fundraising time.

• Ann Arbor-based Shepherd Intelligent Systems LLC, a real-time fleet management software company, announced Oct. 20 that it has partnered with transportation planning consultant JacobsenDaniels Associates. SIS technology provides fleet management tools such as route optimization, idle time reduction, driver performance and communication devices, all of which reduce operating costs through reductions in fuel usage, increases in vehicle utilizations and optimization of labor resources.

• CB Richard Ellis, a real estate services firm based in Ann Arbor, recently announced the appointment of Tim Guest to the office brokerage team. Guest will be responsible for the leasing and sale of office properties in Washtenaw County. He previously worked at Colliers International.

• Thanks to safe work practices and their participation in a workers compensation group dividend program available through the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber, 50 businesses will share a $36,889 premium dividend. The dividend amount returned is based on each participant’s premium costs and range from $20 to more than $7,000, with an average dividend of more than $737. In addition to dividend opportunities, the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber group dividend program offers participating businesses a 5 percent discount on their workers compensation insurance premium rates.

• Ann Arbor-based Thomson Reuters recently donated more than $30,000 to Packard Health on behalf of more than 100 Thomson Reuters employees who volunteered at the health care center in 2010. Of the total donation, $20,000 came from the Thomson Reuters Community Champion Award program - an annual corporate giving program that donates to nonprofit organizations all over the world. Thomson Reuters also provided a $10,000 sponsorship of Packard’s Youth Health Fair and Be Well Block Party and helped fund the remodeling of one of Packard Health’s bathrooms to make it accessible for people with disabilities. Packard Health is a nonprofit provider of primary health care to Washtenaw County residents, with two locations - 3174 Packard Road and Packard Health West at 501 N. Maple. More than 100 Thomson Reuters employees in Ann Arbor have volunteered at the centers this year in a variety of roles: patient advocates, health-fair workers, leaders of fitness walks, and more.

• Wagner Design Associates has completed several new marketing initiatives for the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research. The Ann Arbor-based creative firm developed and coordinated branding for posters, presentations, social media graphics and e-mail marketing campaigns. Wagner Design, in conjunction with Barclay Consulting, also redesigned MICHR's website. MICHR's mission is to enable and enhance clinical and translational research.

• Legacy Land Conservancy, a nonprofit protecting green spaces in southern Michigan, selected its new officers for the 2010-2011 year. Officers elected for a one-year term were Robert Tetens, president, Janet Crone, vice president, Adam Smith, treasurer, and Phil Surratt, secretary. New members of the board of trustees were Joe Fazio, principal and chair of the managing directors of the law firm Miller Canfield; Kristen Schleick, an architect and planner with Hobbs+Black of Ann Arbor; Bob Grese, director of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum; and Bob Helber, chairman and CEO of Continental Capital Realty Inc., a real estate development and management company with offices in Pittsfield Township. Additionally, Rosanne Bloomer and Robert Ewing were reappointed for a second and final term.

• The Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a holiday window decorating contest for all chamber members including retailers, organizations and professional services. During the free event, all participants need to do is sign up and decorate. The chamber will provide decorating ideas and judges. • Pittsfield Charter Township has been awarded $19,000 through the McCalla Trust Fund, to be used for the benefit of elderly persons and/or handicapped children in Washtenaw County. Township Supervisor Mandy Grewal said the township plans to use the grant money to improve the townshi's senior center: repair the roof, replace ceiling tiles, paint the interior walls and renovate the north entry to make it more accessible.
