People & Achievements in the greater Ann Arbor area, including McKinley and MedHub

The following is a list of achievements by businesses and individuals in the Ann Arbor area:

• Ann Arbor real estate investment firm McKinley recently announced the promotion of Albert L. Berriz from director of marketing, media and attraction to vice president/director of residential sales & marketing.

• On March 18, Ann Arbor's MedHub Inc., signed an agreement with health care company Kaiser Permenente, Northern California, to deploy its MedHub enterprise residency management system across all residency and fellowship programs, graduate medical education and hospital finance. In related news, MedHub Inc. recently announced that in the first four months of fiscal year 2010, the company doubled revenues over those from 2009.

• Independent Ann Arbor bookstore Nicola's Books will celebrate its 15th anniversary March 27.

• Two Men and a Truck Ann Arbor franchisee Alan Oversmith recently acquired the Michigan-based moving company's franchise in Brownstown, which serves all of Monroe, as well as Wayne County south of I-94. In related news, Jeff Scott has been named director of sales and marketing for both the Ann Arbor and Brownstown franchises.

• Lawrence G. Almeda, a shareholder in the Ann Arbor office of law firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, was selected as chairman of the State Advisory Committee of the U.S Commission on Civil Rights. Almeda was re-appointed as a member of the committee in September 2009. He will remain chairman for a two-year term.

• Tim and Sheila (Shann) Patton, owners of Patton Holdings in Ann Arbor, have dedicated funds toward the development of the Patton Scholarship at Spring Arbor University. This scholarship will cover up to half of tuition and room and board costs for a student graduating from Fr. Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor to attend SAU. The scholarship will be available starting in the the fall of 2010 and renewable every year of the student's four-year education at SAU. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be accepted to SAU, have a 3.0 overall high school GPA and be a graduate of Fr. Gabriel Richard.

• Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley marks its 20th anniversary in April. The organization will celebrae with a fund-raising party and silent auction April 30. Hile Design LLC of Ann Arbor is providing free publicity for the event.

• MarCole Interactive Systems, a supplier of gift registry solutions for retailers, and Ann Arbor-based Borders announced March 18 an agreement in which Borders will be the exclusive book retailer for MarCole's newly launched National Teacher Registry, a free service that enables teachers to create a registry of items they need and want for their classrooms.

• Tecumseh-based United Bank & Trust recently announced the winners of its Chairman’s Club Award for the fourth quarter of 2009: Julie Adams, loan quality reviewer; Kenny Leonard, vice president of United Structured Finance; and Dana Stump, personal lending officer. Each quarter, Chairman’s Club honorees are nominated and chosen by co-workers for outstanding organizational commitment, support, client service, flexibility, teamwork and cooperation. All three were honored by United’s board of directors for their efforts.

• Kathleen Potempa, dean of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, was elected to serve a two-year term as president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Potempa assumed the presidency March 22 at AACN's annual spring meeting in Washington, D.C.

• Kelly & Kelly, a law firm based in Northville, has opened a new office at 208 E. Washington St. in Ann Arbor, sharing commercial space with Swisher Realty. The phone number for the new office is 734-369-3522.

• Randy Thorne, one of the longest-serving employees of Anderson Paint Co., is retiring after 33 years of service. He managed Anderson's downtown location from 1993 through 2006.

• United Way of Washtenaw County honored Denise Rabidoux, president and CEO of Evangelical Homes of Michigan at the United Way's annual Power of the Purse event, held March 10 at the Campus Inn in Ann Arbor. The honoree is nominated based on three categories: Giving-demonstrating a spirit of giving in the community; advocacy for women in the community; Volunteerism to help women in the community. Evangelical Homes of Michigan is a not-for-profit organization that provides health care, housing and community services to seniors and their extended families at campuses throughout southeast Michigan, including Ann Arbor and Saline.

• Livonia-based P2R Associates was selected as agency of record for China Bridge of Ann Arbor. P2R will provide China Bridge with strategic planning, marketing and communications services to formally launch the firm and will continue to support the organization's business development and marketing initiatives. China Bridge specializes in helping U.S. companies establish operations in China and in helping Chinese businesses invest and enter the US market.

• Ann Arbor SPARK recently promoted Skip Simms to the position of vice president, entrepreneur business development. Simms, who joined Ann Arbor SPARK in 2006, previously served as the organization's director of business accelerator services as well as manager of the Michigan Pre-Seed Capital Fund and the Michigan Microloan Fund Program.

• State officials and local business leaders joined senior executives at Terumo's Ann Arbor campus March 19 to unveil the recently completed state-of-the-art manufacturing plant and expanded headquarters. The campus serves as the corporate headquarters for two Terumo Corporation U.S. subsidiaries, Terumo Cardiovascular Systems and Terumo Heart Inc.

• Masco Cabinetry organization, home of three cabinetry brands -- KraftMaid, Merillat and QualityCabinets - and the DeNova countertop brand announced March 16 that it will move its corporate headquarters to 4600 Arrowhead Drive in Ann Arbor Township.

• The Washtenaw Contractors Association announced the winners of its thirteenth annual PYRAMID Awards at the 2010 awards banquet on March 19. Best Project Team (Under $3 Million) winner was Detroit Zoo Dinosauria Exhibit Installation, owner: Detroit Zoological Society, architect: studiozONE LLC, contractor: JC Beal Construction. Best Project Team (Between $3 & $25 Million) winner was Zaragon Place, owner: Zaragon Inc., architect: Neumann/Smith Architecture, contractor: O'Neal Construction. Best Project Team (Over $25 Million) winner was: Bay City Public Schools, owner: Bay City Public Schools, architect: Wigen Tincknell Meyer & Associates, contractor: Spence Brothers. Best Subcontractor (Under $500,000) winner was U of M Tunnels Phase IV by Eagle Excavation. Best Subcontractor (Over $500,000) winner was U-M MCIT Data Center by Huron Valley Electric/Motor City Electric. The winner in the Best Innovation Category was the Thompson Block Emergency Façade Stabilization System by JC Beal Construction.
