Lewis the cat is returned safely to Downtown Home and Garden

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Lewis the cat, a longtime presence at Ann Arbor shop Downtown Home and Garden, was found alive and well today several days after he was reported missing.

"Two girls just walked into the store with Lewis in hand," shop owner Mark Hodesh said. "Lewis is back home now."

More details on Lewis' adventure abroad — and his rescuers — were not immediately available.

"There was a lot of concern in the community," Hodesh said.

The 15-year old, 15-pound orange tabby went missing from the store last week. The store used its social media presence to ask the community to help find Lewis, who has been greeting customers at the shop for 12 years.

“He has raised generations of kids,” Hodesh said last week. “We have children that have come in and petted him when they were young and they’re now going to graduate school.”

I am so relieved to learn that Lewis has returned to his home! My husband and I are frequent visitors to Ann Arbor and Downtown Home and Garden is one of our stops when in town. I saw the posting for Lewis and was so dismayed. He's an icon for the store! I was thrilled to learn of his safe return. Thanks to those involved for getting him back home again. See you the next time we visit Lewis!

I always do a "Lewis check" when I pass by Downtown H&G. He is one of my favorite things to introduce to my out-of-town visitors. I'm glad he is home safe.

Sounds more like someone 'found' lewis last week, and decided to take him home. I would guess that cat-nappers then realized he did have a home after reading about it in the paper.

Perhaps he was hiding until the debt ceiling issue was resolved.

Or, perhaps you are covering up for your kinfolk, maybe he and you were out on the town with a few of those nine lives models, drinking IPA's and vaping a fresh batch of catnip.

It is good to hear that Lewis is home safely, but I am sure he would tell you, "I didn't know I was lost!"

anytime a missing pet is found it's wonderful! but .... " .. has been greeting customers at the shop for 12 years" "He has raised generations of kids," Hodesh said 12 years = generations? fuzzy math.

In cat years that would be 84, which would place him back before the Great Depression. Or is that in dog years and cats have nine lives?

Lewis says "Well, what can I say? The girls just can't resist me!" LOL So glad to hear he is safe and back to his usual digs.

Maybe he sallied forth to protect us all from the Dexter Bear and had a long journey home. Could be an epic poem in the making.

It's nice to see a positive story amid all the doom and gloom and mayhem of day to day news. Congrats to AA dot com for spreading the word when Lewis was missing. Maybe it helped in locating him and returning him to his home.
