University of Michigan alumni clubs, around the world
NASA
Chicago
The University of Michigan Club of Greater Chicago hosts events year round. Join the group for beach volleyball in the Chicago Sport and Social Club Big Ten League, or a game of softball on Thursday evenings in Waveland Park. The club is looking for venues and office space in the Chicagoland area so that it can put together a list of Michigan-friendly spaces for people hosting events; contact Steven Tamaroglio at steven1082@aol.com with the venue's information.
Seattle
The University of Michigan Club of Seattle is hosting its annual meeting at the Pyramid Alehouse in Seattle on Tuesday, May 18 from 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m. On June 13, they are hosting a family outing and picnic at the Woodland Park Zoo, with free ice cream at Smokey Joe's inside the zoo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Contact the club through its web page.
Columbus, Ohio
Matt Stout, president of the Michigan Alumni Club of Central Ohio, is proud of the "Public Enemy No. 1" status bestowed on him by Columbus Monthly Magazine in November 2003 for being the biggest Michigan fan in Columbus. The club's most recent community service event was Rebuilding Together Central Ohio, an effort directed toward repairing homes of low income homeowners in Central Ohio. Join the group's Facebook group to stay in touch.
San Francisco
The UM Alumni Club of Greater San Francisco is sponsoring the free May 17 Michigan Men's Glee Club Show at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Church at Stanford University.
The Moon
A University of Michigan alumni club orbits the Earth.
David R. Scott, James B. Irwin, and Alfred M. Worden all received honorary doctorates of science from the university in 1971 after their Apollo 15 mission to the moon. Irwin and Worden were U-M graduates, and Scott had attended Michigan for a year before going to West Point. Scott and Irwin established the University of Michigan Club of the Moon after the first ever trip on the Lunar Rover. A 2006 Michigan Daily story debunked the myth that the astronauts brought a Michigan flag to the moon.
Beijing, China
The University of Michigan Club of Beijing Facebook page has only nine members listed. That's less than the Harvard Club and the Rotary Club in that city. The Ross School of Business maintains a list of international clubs.
Alumni association, old school
The Michigan Alumni magazine has been scanned in in part by Google Books; this
1910 annual includes an account of the 1909 meeting of the Upper Peninsula Alumni Association in Ishpeming, plus letters from the Omaha, Los Angeles, Canton, and Gary, Indiana clubs.
Edward Vielmetti was a camper at Camp Michigania, the University of Michigan alumni family camp. Contact him at his alumni email address, emv@umich.edu.
