Ann Arbor area radio roundup: AM stations

By Edward Vielmetti

Today's links go through the AM radio dial for stations that are easy to hear in Ann Arbor. If you have a really awesome radio, you can tune in many more channels than what are listed here. Many of the stations in this area have some kind of online listening, either for previously aired programs or for their live feed.

Our AM list includes two major stations in Detroit (WWJ and WJR), the Catholic radio station "Ave Maria Radio" on WDEO, sports talk WTKA, business talk WLBY, the Spanish language "La Explosiva" on WSDS, conservative talk WAAM, and at the very far right of your dial a mysterious "AM 1700" from Ypsilanti.

760 - WJR

WJR is a news and talk station based in Detroit. Its popular local hosts are Frank Beckman and Paul W. Smith. Recordings of the interview portions of both programs are online. On Feb. 9, Toyota spokesman John McCandless talked to Paul W. Smith about the latest Toyota recall, Metro Airport spokesman Mike Conway talked about Monday's security breach in the McNamara Terminal, and Governor Jennifer Granholm talked about the Asian carp controversy in the Great Lakes.

Listen live to WJR.

950 - WWJ

WWJ is a news and talk station based in Detroit, owned by CBS Radio.

The station has a traffic alert map for Wayne County, powered by SmartRoute Systems and Maptuit Systems, which includes live video feeds from the traffic cameras run by MDOT. WWJ broadcasts traffic and weather information six times an hour "on the 8s".

990 - WDEO

WDEO, "Ave Maria Radio," is a Catholic radio station based in Ann Arbor Township.

Some programming is locally produced, featuring Al Kresta's Kresta in the Afternoon program. Some shows are also simulcast from EWTN's "Global Catholic Radio" shortwave network.

1050 - WTKA

WTKA, "Sports Talk 1050," is a sports and talk radio station based in Ann Arbor owned by Cumulus Radio.

The broadcast schedule for live games for the month includes 6 Michigan hockey games.

1290 - WLBY

WLBY, "Ann Arbor's Business Talk Radio," is based in Ann Arbor and owned by Cumulus Radio.

The Lucy Ann Lance Business Insider show runs weekday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon, and her Saturday morning Lucy Ann Lance Show regularly features AnnArbor.com reporters.

1480 - WSDS

WSDS, "La Explosiva," is a Spanish language station broadcasting from Ypsilanti. It is owned by Birach Broadcasting Corporation.

There are two websites for the station, WSDS1480.com and LaExplosivaDetroit.com. I wasn't able to get either one to play audio live via the Internet.

1600 - WAAM

WAAM, AM 1600, broadcasts from studios on Packard Road. Most of its weekly programming is syndicated conservative talk radio; on weekends it has more locally produced content, including Sunday morning religious services from Bethlehem United Church and First Presbyterian Church and the Sunday evening Bone Conduction Music Show from Thayrone.

1700, Ypsilanti

The AM 1700 station in Ypsilanti has a studio at 33 N. Washington St. I haven't actually heard it, and the website is not especially informative.

Edward Vielmetti listens to the radio for AnnArbor.com.
