The Michigan Pond Hockey Classic, originally scheduled for this weekend on Whitmore Lake, has been rescheduled for Feb. 8-10, event organizers announced Monday.

Ice thickness of less than the required eight inches caused the event to to be rescheduled, but organizers said in a press release that “the projected forecast for the next few weeks is very good for ice conditions, therefore, we are confident the lake will be more than ready by February 8.”

This marks the second straight year that weather has disrupted the annual 4-on-4 event. Last year the tournament was canceled due to unseasonably warm weather.

Red Bull is sponsoring this year’s event for the first time, with the top division winner earning an all-expenses paid trip to Finland to compete at the Red Bull Open Ice Championships.

MPHSC is expecting 120-140 teams to compete. Proceeds from the event go to local hockey organizations and school districts.
