Week 4 prep football predictions: We're extremely susceptible to the 'homer' pick
Washtenaw County has two college football programs. Soon to be three, when Concordia College launches its program in 2011.
Washtenaw County has 12 high school football teams. Make it 13 when you add in the eight-man variety, like is being played at Eastern Washtenaw Multicultural Academy.
I know, I'm not exactly breaking news here. But there is a point.
What are the odds that on the weekend when the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan play an intra-county college game at Michigan Stadium, there's only one intra-county high school game on the schedule?
It's true. Dexter at Lincoln on Friday night is our only head-to-head game.
How does that play into the predictions game? It leaves me (and the readers who opt to play along) extremely susceptible to the "homer" pick.
Maybe I was guilty of just that in last week's mediocre 6-4 performance. Three of those losses, after all, came when I chose in-county schools (Huron, Willow Run and Whitmore Lake) to beat their out-of-county opponents.
Readers were even more provincial, which both paid off (picking Lincoln over Tecumseh) and backfired (Milan over Carleton Airport).
But I'm not scared. I've picked Washtenaw County teams to go 10-0 against outsiders this weekend (see my picks on MLive.com), which includes a pair of Thursday games because Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset Friday.
You can play along by filling out the polls below. If readers' cumulative picks beat mine, I'll donate $100 to Food Gatherers.
