View from the press box: Michigan rallies for 38-34 victory on Greg Mathews touchdown catch against Notre Dame
Fans stormed the field at Michigan Stadium, players swarmed to the student section and camera flashes filled the stands on Saturday after the Michigan football team upset Notre Dame 38-34.
Greg Mathews caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier, setting off the first celebration in Michigan Stadium as the Wolverines took a 38-34 lead with 11 seconds to play.
Notre Dame had taken a 34-31 lead with just 5:21 to play when halfback Armando Allen scored on an 8-yard run with 5:21 to play. Allen, a junior, also ran in the two-point conversion.
Michigan had an 11-point lead after quarterback Tate Forcier zipped up the middle on a 31-yard scoring run with 14:16 to play to give the Wolverines a 31-20 lead.
Michigan led 31-26 with 9:46 to play. Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen found Golden Tate along the sideline for a 21-yard touchdown play to tighten the score.
Earlier in the second half, Forcier rolled to his left and found Kevin Koger for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 7:55 to play in the third quarter.
Forcier's pass completed a four-play drive that started when Stevie Brown recovered Jonas Gray's fumble.
Clausen tossed two touchdown passes and Nick Tausch had two field goals in the first half as the Irish took a 20-17 lead into halftime.
Clausen's second TD came when he found a leaping Michael Floyd in the back of the end zone to cap a seven-play, 69-yard drive. Clausen found Golden Tate for a 4-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Tate also caught a 15-yard pass and ran for 5 yards on the 77-yard drive.
Darryl Stonum returned a kickoff 94 yards late in the first quarter Saturday for Michigan's second touchdown. Stonum's return was the first kickoff return for a touchdown for Michigan since Steve Breaston returned one 95 yards against Minnesota on Oct. 8, 2005.
Stonum was helped off the field by two people with 9:27 left in the game and looked unlikely to return.
Michigan running back Brandon Minor opened the scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead against Notre Dame. Minor set up the score with a 27-yard gain on the previous play.Notre Dame's first drive ended with a missed field goal, producing the first loud cheer of the day in Michigan Stadium. Even louder: When Central Michigan's victory against Michigan State was announced a few minutes later.

No Hemingway: Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway (ankle) is in street clothes and won't play today.
No cheering in the press box? The traditional rule of no cheering in a press box was overrun when Central Michigan's Andrew Aguila kicked a 42-yard field goal with 3 seconds to play to give the Chippewas a 29-27 victory over Michigan State. And the load "Woah!" from several people when Michigan State committed a penalty to nullify Aguila's first missed attempt, caused this press box announcement: "There is no cheering in the press box, but in this case, we'll make an exception."
Seen on the way to the stadium: A bagpiper, playing "The Victors."
Heard in the stadium: A "Fire Millen" chant. Former Lions general manager Matt Millen is a color analyst for today's game on ABC.
