WTKA Mott Takeover raises over $100,000 for Charles Woodson Clinical Research Fund

By Michael Rothstein

A bunch of former Michigan football players came to a radio station on Friday. The result was a massive donation to a good cause.

“We’re not going off the air until we’re in triple figures,” Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon said at 5:30 p.m., with the fundraiser within $5,000 of raising over $100,000.

Soon after, all the telephone lines were full.

With five minutes left in Friday’s fundraiser, the station passed the six-digit mark, raising $103,245 and counting at the end of the broadcast. Final numbers were not immediately available pending online donations.

The WTKA Mott Takeover supports the Charles Woodson Clinical Research Fund. It is the first event of a three-day fundraiser for the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

In the final hour, the Mott Takeover received a $10,000 donation from an unidentified caller. Also in the final hour, Michigan basketball coach John Beilein called in during a segment with Brandon and football coach Brady Hoke and donated an unknown amount.

Among the former Michigan players who participated were Mike Hart, Morgan Trent, Aaron Shea, Marlin Jackson, Jarrett Irons and — back in Ann Arbor for the first time since he graduated from Michigan — Amani Toomer.

Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr started things off at 7 a.m. and Brandon and Hoke ended it at 6 p.m.

The amount raised dwarfed the $66,035 raised by the day-long event last year.
