Top 5 storylines entering the Michigan football season

By Michael Rothstein

The Michigan football team enters the 2010 preseason with an NCAA meeting regarding potential violations looming, a defensive back questioning a quarterback's work ethic and coach Rich Rodriguez facing possible NCAA violations at West Virginia, his former employer.

The circumstances add intrigue before the season's first snap is taken against Connecticut on Sept. 4. No matter what happens in 2010 there is one guarantee this season with Michigan football: it is going to be an interesting season.

With that, here's a look at the Top 5 storylines heading into Monday’s first practice.

1.The Quarterback Question: This is the third straight year Michigan will enter fall camp not knowing who its starting quarterback will be. Already, there has been controversy in the competition between sophomores Denard Robinson and Tate Forcier. At Big Ten media day, Michigan cornerback Troy Woolfolk said Robinson had moved ahead in the competition and questioned Forcier's work ethic. That jives with Rodriguez’s praise of Robinson throughout the spring and last week.

2. The NCAA: Michigan meets with the NCAA Committee on Infractions on Saturday in Seattle, the culmination of a year-long process examining the Wolverines football program. The school agreed with four of five NCAA findings and has already self-imposed penalties. It is fighting the allegation that Rodriguez failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance. The NCAA likely won’t announce its conclusions for 6 to 10 weeks, meaning the conversation will hover in the 2010 season.

3. Job security: Rodriguez is 8-16 in his two years at Michigan, hasn’t made a bowl and saw his team falter down the stretch last year. New athletic director Dave Brandon has publicly supported Rodriguez throughout his tenure thus far, but another losing season - or losses to rivals Michigan State, Notre Dame and Ohio State - could mean trouble.

4. Defense: Greg Robinson enters his second year as the Michigan defensive coordinator with what is being described as a 3-3-5 scheme. Michigan needs to figure out how it will replace first round NFL pick Brandon Graham and cornerback Donovan Warren. The biggest question now is in the secondary.

5. Kicking: Rodriguez defined it as the team’s biggest concern entering the preseason. If Michigan can’t find a good solution between redshirt freshman Brendan Gibbons and walk-on Seth Broekhuizen, it could be a tense year.

As to number 5, if he thinks the kicking game is the biggest concern over the defense, he really needs to get a clue. Kicking is one of those areas that is coached and does not require an adjustment to a "new" style. Who is RR blaming this on? It isn't like he is teaching a completely new style how to punt, kick a field goal, or kick off. Look at the history of good kickers and they pretty much are what they are from the beginning.
