Top 5 quotes from Dave Brandon during today's press conference

By Pete Bigelow

Here's a look at Dave Brandon's most notable quotes from today's press conference at the Junge Family Champions Center, at which the Michigan athletic director announced the firing of football coach Rich Rodriguez:

“I personally believe Jim Harbaugh is heading to the NFL, but that’s my opinion as opposed to any qualified judgment.” - Brandon, on whether he'd been in contact with the Stanford head coach.

“I have talked to Jim Harbaugh. I will continue to talk to Jim Harbaugh. He’s a Michigan Man." - Brandon, on whether he'd continue to talk with Harbaugh about the job.

“Is there a thought of a defensive-minded head coach? There’s a thought of getting a defensive-minded everything. I want the ball boys to be defensive minded.” - Brandon, on whether he'd give thought to hiring a defensive-minded head coach.

“Michigan fans expect more than this. So do Michigan athletic directors.” - Brandon, on the 15-22 record Rich Rodriguez compiled in the past three years.

“Is Jim Tressel a bad coach? He seems to be doing pretty well down there. At least against us.” - Brandon, on whether it's a prerequisite for the next coach to have come from a BCS conference.

Here's a quote: "Bo never won a national championship!" Oops, that's a fact - not a quote. Let's get someone off that coaching tree though -- I mean who needs a dynamic offense when you have 3 yards and a cloud of dust in your back pocket lol!?

What is the origin regarding evaluation at the end of the season. Was it before the football season? What was the context of the comment when first made?

Michboy....I agree. I've had that feeling since being at the game on Saturday. I feel it will be a name coach, just Hoke, Miles or JH.

PortageLkBlu, I would be very surprised and disappointed if DB DOESN'T have at least a pretty good idea who his first several top candidates are already. I would also assume that he has some idea about how "available" they are.

Who knows, DB might already have a guy would that really surprise any of you?

heartbreakm: I think Brandon's speculation on Harbaugh were completely appropriate. Brandon wants to manage people's expectations by making it clear he doesn't think Harbaugh will continue to coach college ball all while retaining the slim possibility that Harbaugh might want to come to Michigan. If he didn't make some comment to that effect, people would continue to write false speculations about Harbaugh coming to Michigan. When Brandon hires somebody else, people will be disappointed and come out of the gate giving the new coach a hard time.

"'I have talked to Jim Harbaugh. I will continue to talk to Jim Harbaugh. Hes a Michigan Man.' - Brandon, on whether he'd continue to talk with Harbaugh about the job." I think the intent of this quote is attributed incorrectly. Brandon clearly was saying that U of M has contact with Harbaugh because of his alumni status and the University will continue to have such communications with Harbaugh irrespective of whether Harbaugh will come to Michigan. Brandon was detaching himself from the impression that he was currently talking to Harbaugh about the job.

Is there a thought of a defensive-minded head coach? Theres a thought of getting a defensive-minded everything. I want the ball boys to be defensive minded. - Brandon, on whether he'd give thought to hiring a defensive-minded head coach. It is nice to have a defensive minded coach but I would prefer a coach that is defensive minded AND one that will also have an offense mind. Now if the defense can create enough fumbles and interceptions for runs to touchdowns we may have something.... I would have suspected a comment about a well rounded coach that can coach defense, offense, and oh yeah, kickers and special teams. :+}

Michboy40 Sorry, I'm not available. Have to help coach my daughter's minor a softball team this spring. DB will do a good job finding someone else.

I must admit i have been skeptical about Brandon as an AD--until today. A most impressive news conference, I feel confident in our future, it will be interesting to see who he hires.

Burger Northern Michigan is still in Michigan. Right? And parts of O-i0 were stolen after the Toledo War. SO what's your point? Michigan Man, or Woman for that matter, is a "frame of mind"! If you have to have it explained to you, you're not it!

I have a feeling that Brady Hoke is not coming to Michigan either. Someone new is going to emerge..someone unexpected.

Harbaugh's a Michigan Man. What does that mean? That he graduated from UM? Bo came from Miami Ohio. Carr came from Northern Michigan. These are Michigan Men or not? What the heck is a Michagn Man.

Blu-n-Tpa... LOL about the tater, LS, and T-212. BTW..weren't they fired along with the coaching staff today?

heartbreakM

I think DB speculating on what Harbaugh may be doing was way out of line. A simple, "we would love to talk to him" or something like that would have been more like it. It is not up to DB to speculate on what JH will or won't do. I thought it was totally inappropriate, and almost like excuse making 101 as taught by RR.

Blu-n-Tpa, agree with your assessment about DB in comment #1. The mystery about why he waited so long was answered today. He felt strongly that the team was to be coached by the existing coaching staff (not an interim coach) for the Gator Bowl as this is what was best for the current team. One can choose to be skeptical about this, but in seeing him stress this I for one believe him. I am not naive enough to think that the $1.5 mil reduction in the buyout did not have a lot to do with it - but it was not the only factor. He mentioned succession planning, in terms of always having potential replacements identified for ALL key positions (especially the Head Coach). This to me means that while he has not necessarily had lengthy conversations with any of the potential candidates - they are identified and the ball is already rolling. As he said, he wants to move fast, but has to get the hire right. Go Blue!

I was most intrigued by Brandon's reference to defense-minded coaches and the fact that the next head coach does not necessarily have to come from BCS conference ranks.

The real question is, why would Jim Harbaugh want this particular job? He'd have to be nuts to take it. I'm betting that sanity will win out and he'll say 'No thanks'.

AA.com what about these quotes? You must have missed them. I'll help. DB further noted: "After dicussion with tater, LS and T-212, I've decided to let RR go. With T212's record of postings, and the history of taters and LS opinions, I know doing the exact opposite of what they wanted was the BEST thing for Michigan football." "I thank them for their input and wish them well is whatever it is they do in the real world."

What's not to like. Serious, but with a touch of wit. Answers the questions and doesn't appear to be too "full" of himself. Grounded. Whatever decision he makes will be thought out and the best choice available. That's all you can ask.
