Michigan's Ryan Mallett, center, is sacked by Wisconsin's Nick Hayden during the third quarter as Matt Shaughnessy closes in.

After toying with the idea of turning pro, former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett decided to play for a second season at Arkansas.

"I felt like I owed it to the state," he told the Associated Press. "They let me come in and transfer here to Arkansas, and I felt like it wouldn't be fair after one year to just up and leave."

The highly touted pro prospect also said his foot is fine after offseason surgery, and that he'll be ready to go by the start of camp.

I like reading the articles on past Wolverines. Just because they transfer for whatever reason does not mean they are not Wolverines in their hearts. They signed up to play here and it just didn't work out. Toney Clemons wanted to wear the Winged Helmet as a child but his goal also was to become an NFL player. When the new regime came in with a system that didn't utilize his skills he had to make a decision. It was Colorado, a program that has been struggling for a long time. But a program with a coaching staff nonetheless that would help him reach his goal. Keep us posted Ann Arbor.com. I would love to see how the others are doing this upcoming season via your articles. Btw: Clemons was voted pre-season newcomer of the year for the Big 12 by the media that covers the Big 12. Congratulations to him.

Anyone following Toney Clemons? Voted Big 12 Pre-Season Newcomer of the Year by the Media that covers that conference. Another one of those bare cupboard athletes with no talent.

Give Ryan Mallett credit for knowing the stars were not aligned for him at Michigan and getting OUT! He has saved himself from the quagmire Michigan has become and is on the road to higher heights and football glory. Mallet would have been the starting QB under the old system and might have lead us to great things. Think about Mallett and McGuffie on the field at the same time and that is what Michigan might be. But, NO, we have undersized players getting beat up by the fifth game of the season and there goes our chances of winning anything meaningful. The stadium will be beautiful and impressive but the team will be beat up by game five and start losing just like last year. Does anyone seriously think it will be any different? Why? Based on what? Pie in the sky Pollyanna hopes? Blind devotion does not equate to being a true fan. Reality has to enter into the equation at some point. All this being said I hope Michigan has a great year but I seriously doubt it knowing what has taken place over the past two years. Rodriguez has got to go. For all his outspoken comments we need a Michigan man like Harbaugh.

Another good post, AZWolverine. Following your lead, and taking a look at the upcoming season... "Fans are looking forward to the upcoming season as UM prepares to double its Big 10 victory total from last season. Fans are looking forward to 2 victories this season which will indicate this team is twice as good as last year's team. When asked which two games UM will win, they respond with Indiana and Purdue. When asked why, they say they want to sweep the state of Indiana. Fans are looking for revenge versus their new arch rival Purdue and want to prove that last year's Indiana game was no "gift" from the game officials. Both are away games in the toughest venues in the state of Indiana, but fans are optimistic UM will win. Not only will UM win, they will deliver crushing blows to the competition, winning by a field goal in overtime. Fans say a 2-win conference record will prove that UM is back."

jvc, Don't read A2.com if you find them so incompetent. Here, I'll write a quick "article" that you will enjoy: Rich Rodriguez has proven his worth as Michigan's coach and should earn a long-term extension after 8 wins over two seasons. The upsets of Wisconsin and Notre Dame, not to mention maintaining the Little Brown Jug against Minnesota only bolster this FACT. Rich has also proven that he is willing to go the extra mile with increased practice times as he continues to bring both pride and integrity to the Wolverine program. Those who stay will be champions, and those who've left...well, we will not mention them by name nor acknowledge their existence ever again. We only talk about players that currently play for Michigan. In fact, Rick Leach was quoted as...oops, scratch that, he's not current! Here's looking forward to CONTINUED SUCCESS this season with our current batch of players and our proven winner at head coach, Rich Rodriguez. Hopefully I've satisfied those fans out there who only want to live in the world of rainbows and daisys and pretend that the only current problem with UM football is 'haters' and the media. Enjoy.

In re coverage - jvc aand others - this is annarbor.com. Not Wolverines.com. Bear in mind that a lot of people in Ann Arbor are not Wolverine fans. Some root against the Wolverines, some root for other teams, some don't follow college sports at all. If the goal of this paper was simply to root for the Maize and Blue, they could simply re-post UM press releases.

I put myself in Mallet's shoes and think "okay I'll stay for 2008 and be the hero. But what happens in 2009 and 2010?" I don't care what they would have promised Ryan, he made the right decision for him. Go somewhere that runs a pro-set, sit his sophmore year to learn that coach's system, develope, team make-up, culture, etc and build his stats his next two years, getting ready for the pros. I don't think he said anything bad about RR because there was nothing bad to say. They talked,(a little or a lot, we don't know), and Ryan made a choice that best serves his CAREER. For many, college is a stepping stone to the pros. Theres no conspiracy here.

Well said Yelmonian. If he was gone before RR was hired why even take meeting with RR? There has never been anything to emply that Mallet was leaving the program. But I'm done with the Mallet situation! 3 and OUT, I'd go so far as to say that Threet will be within the top3 in the PaC10 and maybe top20 in the country statistically. His career has been marred by coaching changes and new schemes.

Threet has a strong arm and is decently mobile...if he gets his accuracy together he will be a very good QB at ASU.

Doncanham, Why is it everytime someone wants to make points... they put "FACT" in capitals... and I'm supposed to buy it as the gospel truth. If you read the story from Mallett's point of view... he had two phone conversations and a sit down meeting with RR. That's a FACT based on a Mallet quote. So one or the other is lying. http://www.freep.com/article/20080110/SPORTS06/801100423/WHY-RYAN-MALLETT-TRANSFERRED--Ex-Wolverine-felt-%5C-forced-out%5C- From what Mallett said at the time of his departure, it sure sounds like he was "forced" out by the system (Mallett was polite enough not to call out the coach). And why would Mallett have (3) discussions with RR if he knew he was gone before RR even arrived? Your theory seems way to simple for me. I think if Carr had been there, or a coach with a pro-style offense... then Mallett would have probably stayed. As it is, Mallett knew RR wasn't going to use Mallett's talent set... so he left.

Just for the record Steven Threet was a 4 star just like Mallet. The difference is Mallet ended up with a school who used his talents and I'm pretty sure Threet will do the same. If Threet emerges as a top QB in the country will the RR-lover's admit that it's the lack of coaching not lack of talent because that bare-cupboard thing is a worn record. Hitches and Bubble-screens doesn't win Big Ten championships and running undersized QB's to death won't do it either.

there was alot of talk of Mallett transferring EVEN if LC remained coach. Two facts 1)when RR became coach he had two one on one meetings with Mallett set up---Mallett did not show for either 2) since going to Arkansas (and we know how immature he was in AA) he has never blasted RR because he knew he was gone. Since RR could not get a committment from Mallett he went to his offense 100%. Had Mallett stayed we do not know if that would have happened. Had Mallett gone to spring ball, taken majority of snaps and than transferred where would M have been if Threat & Sheridan had not gotten there snaps in spring ball? RR wanted a committment which he could not get

Spartydidyourlilsister? What? How is your comment not off topic? What do those three have to do with anything about Mallet? I'm real curious how the moderators on this board work? Back to topic though.... that Lloyd Carr was a pretty bad evaluator of talent though, eh? I mean Mallett was so bad that RR couldn't find a spot for him on the team. I'm glad to see that Mallett was able to work twice as hard and use his very limited physical abilities and still succeed elsewhere.

Mallett represents what Michigan could have had and the results with him would have been much better than they have been without him. Unlike great coaches Rich Rod couldn't make work what he had so it had to blow everything up. Unfortunately for him after another projected so-so season Rich Rod will be gone.

Yes, please enough with the Ryan Mallett stories. Or maybe you should start covering everyone who leaves Michigan. Every day you could cover someone different. Mallett makes it seem as though Arkansas was a big factor in his decision. Probably less of a factor was the fact he's not ready for the NFL yet.

That was mighty noble of Mallett to stay at Arkansas. I'm sure he had his new school at the top of his priority list while making his decision. I'm anxiously looking forward to the next Mallett update on AA.com.

I don't view the article as an obsession with Ryan Mallett. Other papers also cover ex-wolverine progress. Besides, fans appreciate hearing about the talent they used to see at Michigan. It reminds me of the time when Michigan football was consistently very good. Now, it's not good, but with the promise of being good every 4 or 5 years or so.

Damn, If Rich Rodriguez had spent half as much time talking to Ryan Mallett as he did talking to Terrelle Pryor we wouldnt be in this situation.

Macabre Sunset

If Mallett continues to improve, this decision will pay off for him financially. He could be a top-five pick with a big year. I don't blame him for leaving. With his physical skills, his goal was always to reach the NFL. Since RichRod wanted to implement his gimmick offense right off the bat (rather than adapting his system to his players, like good coaches do), Mallett had no choice.

Ann Arbor.com.. While it is certainly nice to hear how other ex-wolverines are coping, I find your obsession with Mallett quite telling. It is clear that annarbor.com is either unwilling or unable to adequately cover the Wolverines. Perhaps you should stop "pretending" to cover U of M sports and/or hire competent reporters that will accomplish the task. Could it be that you have a specific agenda? Your bias is showing. j
