Report: Michigan representatives met with Les Miles on Monday

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Tomorrow came a day early.

WFAB, a CBS television affiliate in Baton Rouge, La., is reporting that Michigan officials met with LSU coach Les Miles today.

The station said athletic director Dave Brandon "and two other Michigan representatives left the meeting" and headed back to Baton Rouge Metro Airport Monday night.

Miles announced he would meet with Michigan at a press conference early Monday afternoon, but did not say where or when that meeting would take place. Multiple reports said it would take place Tuesday.

According to the Associated Press, a Domino's Pizza jet was in Baton Rouge for nearly five hours on Monday. Brandon is Domino's non-executive chairman of the board, but no longer has day-to-day duties with the company.

ESPN.com reporter Joe Schad was told by a source close to Miles that if the LSU coach were offered the position, he would accept it.

No matter who is offered or accepts the job, MGoBlue.com announced a raffle that will award two seats to the new coach's introductory press conference.

Unreported in this story is a brief stop made by DB's plane at a little-used runway (aka State St.) near MDen where Brandon picked up a little gift for the Mad Hatter: http://www.mden.com/shopping/product.cgi?1077786336879242?SEARCH?ADC804

Miles is the guy period. He can guarantee himself more years with a new contract at Michigan than LSU as they really don't care losing him thus the willingness to let him go. The deal is done Miles new head coach. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him introduced to the Michigan crowd at halftime of the OSU/Michigan basketball game. Sound familiar? 10 years ago the Vest was introduced at a home basketball game for OSU against........????

RR is gone and the players will ultimately be happy when the HC brings us back to our winning tradition. They are competitors and want to win, so they will gladly forget about the last 3 years of disappointment. Sure some of them have personal ties to RR and probably always will, but as a team their objective is to win the BT and go to a bowl game, and if they do this well enough it could lead to the NC. Deep down the players know better than any of us that this was not happening under RR, and they will gladly follow a new leader who will lead them back to winning, and doing it in an honorable way.

Well T-Wolf posting a pick of Les and being a 5th year Senior Captain speaks volume if you ask me.

@1st Down, Yeah, I agree we want the best coach. I'm not arguing that point. 1) I am saying that 1 or 2 players posting stuff does not equate to the team being happy RRod is gone. 2) A post by TWoolf of Miles in M garb does not necessarily equate to "I am glad RRod got fired." unless he states that...you are just using his post as a proxy to project your own feelings. You could easily just say that regardless of whether he likes RRod or not, RRod is gone, therefore he thinks the next best choice is Miles.

Tokyo...and that would be why players like Woolfolk are posting photoshopped pics of Les Miles in Michigan gear to their face books and twitters in hopes of this potential hire coming true? The players are no different than u and i...they want a good coach who can utilize their talents and win games... its not a popularity contest.

@lawrencelaundry, I heard current players were unhappy when they found out about RR being canned. That's a sign of the team wanting to play for their old coach. Hearsay and unsubstantiated conjecture goes both ways.

Ace Ventura, that's funny. I ate there and it was delicious. But it will be my last. No way im paying 15 bucks for a sandwich and a pickle. I rather go get a steak for that price. But now I can say I ate there at least once. Hope Les is announced today. It will be great to have him here. Ecspecially since he played and coached in AA. I think michigan has the talent, these kids just were not coached very well at all. I also think when players here Miles coming they will be excited. I heard current players were happy when they found out about RR being canned. That's a sign of the team not wanting to play for their coach. Go blue.

Considering Les Miles has often employed the disgusting practice of "gray-shirting" recruits (ie. over-recruiting then telling some of the recruits who have enrolled that they won't get a scholarship after all), it shouldn't be a surprise if he uses Brandon and Michigan to increase his salary at LSU. His wife likes it in Baton Rouge, anyway. Bernie Smilovitz just revealed that Brandon pulled out his secret weapon tonight and offered to include Zingermans Deli in the deal, so maybe he will get Miles here after all.

Eep, not sure if Hoke has a relationship with Les...I dont think he would leave the HC gig for a DL or DC position no matter how much he wants the Michigan job eventually. As of now, his resume doesnt stack up enough to get the job unless Michigan is out of options. That may change in a few years if he continues to build at SDSU. BTW as you mentioned it didnt work out for Conan in the NBC deal...but he did walk with a lot of $

Eep, I wondered this exact thing not two hours ago. I've included the summary of the post I put up on a different site below...it really mirrors your sentiments: I've been thinking about a combination that would seem to get everything done that we as the wolverine nation are trying to. Les Miles as Michigan's Head Coach, and Brady Hoke as the Defensive Coordinator, with Hoke taking the DC job on the understanding that he is the next-in-line to the HC job. Hoke has proven chops as a DC, and has stated (as we all know), that his ultimate goal is to be the HC at Michigan. This solution would give us the name recognition and immediate coaching skills (Les Miles, NC Ring, Winning teams, etc) needed to turn around the current program, while also giving Hoke some seasoning in the Big Ten. Currently, I think there are some well-founded worries about how well Hoke would fare in the Big Ten were he to assume the HC post from SDSU right now. But with him coordinating the D, we'd get to do a "dry run" on him, and we'd know he can field a kick-ass defense in a few years once he's shown this.Plus, sharpening his skills on what will hopefully be a successful offense would make a kickass combinaiton. We'd double up on Michigan Men, who understand the tradition and importance of the program, guarantee that any "Les is gonna retire this year!!!" rumors causing trouble, and have a smooth transition for whenever Les does retire. And I think it goes without saying that Brady Hoke would set his goals on immediately making the defense as good as possible because it'll affect his promotion. It's a thought I've been kicking around for a bit...it's not Hoke's dream job, exactly, but if we put in the necessary guarantees (verbal, I hope), then maybe we could entice him back home and get the best of both worlds. This is probably a pipedream, but in terms of getting a coach to stay long-term, and not having to go through this shit in the next 5 years, I think it's a kickass idea.

Eep, @ eep, I just made this point, over at maizenbrew. I think this scenario would be an ideal solution to this situation...both ensuring our short term success, and lining up a successor for whenever Les retires. D21, you might be right. Les should listen and is under no obligation to accept any offer. What I meant was that my hope is that Les wouldn't accept just to drive a higher comp package at LSU. I don't believe that is his goal - but hey, who knows? I would rather have him turn U of M down rather than accept and then have a change of heart.

This is going to sound crazy, but probably no more crazy than a lot of other things people have posted this week. Brady Hoke is 52. Les Miles is 57. Hoke is currently earning $700K, with an offer on the table for about 1 million. The highest paid assistant head coaches in the SEC earn over 1 million dollars per year (Monte Kiffin at Tennessee earns $1.2 million guaranteed, with a 300K bonus this year). It would be surprising if Hoke was willing to take a step down to an assistant's title... but he supposedly REALLY, REALLY wants to come to Michigan... and DB is supposedly willing to pay SEC rather than Big10 money... If DB can work out a Leno/Conan type of deal... where Miles agrees to step down after five or six years... who knows? Although.. we saw how well this type of thing worked out for NBC. Why have just one, when you can have both?

The press reports have ranged between two very different potential stances by LSU that are on both ends of the spectrum: 1) LSU will offer to reduce/ eliminate the $1.25 mil buyout (why would they do this by the way?)if Miles wants to leave. 2) LSU is planning to match or beat any offer from Michigan. Here is what I don't want to see happen. U of M makes strong offer, LSU does in fact "match or beat" the offer, and Les says...I like it in Baton Rouge, guess I'll stay here. Here's to hoping that IF any offer is made to Les, and he accepts, he understands that he can't change his mind and decide to stay at LSU.

Like the one article says if Les doesn't take the job this time there might not be a third offer that is if Brandon does indeed offer Les Miles the job at Mich. Another thought would be if Les Miles is offered the job how many of his LSU staff come with him? I've always felt a bit iffy about Les Miles but another point is that a head coach is an organizer and if he's the type of guy that surrounds himself with great assistants and he is a great recruiter that is a positive plus. I know LSU has had issues with him about play calling hence, "Mad Hatter". I still like Mike Bellotti from Oregon, Mike orchestrated Oregon's team up until 2 years ago. At issue is Mike's age being 60. Mike's not flashy so he fly's under the radar. Mike brought Chip Kelly to Oregon you'll find a lot of good things about Mike Bellotti if you research him. Les Miles is 57. Either way in this day and age if you can get 10 good years out of a coach that's considered a good run. Given the choice I would take Mike Bellotti.

Don't jump to conclusions too fast. Remember Brandon's words: "it is an honor to represent Michigan and discuss our football program's needs and opportunities with a variety of impressive candidates and/or people who can offer valuable advice and input." This visit may have only been to get Miles input and advice on hiring Hoke? I hope not, but could be...
