Quarterback Terrelle Pryor leaving Ohio State football program

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The look of this year's Michigan-Ohio State football rivalry game continues to change.

Eight days after coach Jim Tressel was forced to resign, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Buckeyes' quarterback Terrelle Pryor is leaving the team.

Terrelle Pryor, who is 3-0 against Michigan, won't return for a fourth game against the Wolverines, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

AnnArbor.com file photo

From the Plain Dealer:

Terrelle Pryor has ended his playing career at Ohio State, his lawyer, Larry James said this evening in a phone call with The Plain Dealer.

"In the best interest of my teammates, I have decided to forego my senior year of football at the Ohio State University," James said, reading a statement on behalf of his client.

James said Pryor had been considering this option for several days and made the choice this evening, leaving James' office in Columbus just before 6 p.m. James said the decision does not mean that Pryor will necessarily be facing further NCAA sanctions that could have ended his Ohio State career, but the quarterback, who would have been a senior this fall, made this choice now. He was already facing a five-game suspension at the start of the 2011 season for trading memorabilia to a Columbus tattoo artist for money and tattoos.

"We've talked about the emotional roller coaster that he is going through," James told The Plain Dealer, "and even if he was cleared 100 percent it was going to be difficult."

Exits by Tressel and Pryor leaves interim coach Luke Fickell and a to-be-determined quarterback leading Ohio State into Michigan Stadium on Nov. 26. The Buckeyes have won seven straight games and nine of the last 10 against their biggest rival.

RELATED: Terrelle Pryor's recruiting decision ends up a good thing for Michigan football.

Joe Bauserman, a former minor league pitcher in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, had been considered the primary backup to Pryor. True freshman Braxton Miller, an early enrolee who had a standout spring game performance, could also contend for playing time with Kenny Guiton and Taylor Graham.

Of course, the rivalry game was already going to have plenty of new faces with first-year coach Brady Hoke and his staff taking over the Michigan program in January.

I hear that Pryor is reconsidering his decision to leave Ohio State to play pro football. After hearing he might not be good enough for the NFL and he'd have to play in the CFL, he said he didn't think he could afford the pay cut.

To Superbuck, you can lump all the angry people that are angry at Jim Tressel including true fans of college football, the media, opposing fans such as Mich. and buc fans all together and no one is going to be as hard on Jim Tressel as he is going to be on himself for the rest of his life.

I'm a Michigan Wolverine faithful fan and I would like to comment on Jim Tressel's demise. At first when Jim Tressel was advised to resign for the better of the Buckeye program I felt sympathy for t he man and his family. I was looking forward in 3 to 4 years when coach Hoke got his team in place in Ann Arbor to some great matchups between coach Hoke and coach Tressel. I always begrudgeingly admired Jim Tressel as an opponent of Michigan, now however, as events about his teams and players are unfolding I sadly must change my view of Jim Tressel. I believe I'm a fair person and therefore what I am about to say I say with regret. If the issues unfolding about Ohio State concerned one or two second or third stringers I might agree that it could have slipped past Jim Tressel, asistant coaches and administration however, when your star QB a possible Heisman candidate and several other important team players lie and cheat the system not just once but many violations it is becoming clear beyond any doubt to me or buc fans that Jim Tressel is a dishonorable man and a discredit to his school, players, players families and fans of college football as a whole. Jim Tressel is a very intelligent man and coach and I believe unless Jim was in a coma it is an insult to every man and woman and child that is a fan of college football. I do sympathize with the Ohio State fans that are holding on to their wish that this would go away and Jim would continue being the coach for the bucs. This is a black stain on all of college football in particular Ohio State and it cannot be whitewashed only eliminated and only time will heal this infected wound.

UMgoblue47 you have it correct ! Pryor may not have been the first active Buckeyes player to collect cash for signatures from Talbott. The parent of one former Ohio State player told "Outside the Lines" that he saw Talbott provide what he called "stacks of money" to active Buckeyes players, including a player now in the NFL.

It's going to get really really annoying for you OSU fans when every single B1G opponent reminds you that it's been a long time since you beat our team without cheating. In fact, "Sweatervest" is now synonymous with cheating. My guess is that chant will greet your team at every opposing stadium. Congratulations. Apparently Pryor had the Key to C-Bus.. A booster was paying him $500 to $1000 for autographs of memorabilia etc, as far back as 2009,and to the tune of $40,000 . and TP was depositing those checks in his own bank account, Wonder if the IRS is next to extend the heat on him, and he had VIP status at business's and restaurants in the C-Bus area, without having to pay for his parties etc.. You wonder why he decided to go the big O ,instead of Michigan. He knew it wouldn't get over looked at Michigan, and never will.. This is going to be the worst violations in NCAA history. and its huge! like another poster said here, there is blood in the water and the Big sharks are circling the rotten mess at osu.. Proud to be a Michigan Fan..

Well now TP doesn't have to answer any questions to the NCAA or anyone else as far as that goes. Great athlete but to big of a head. This young man is now a discrace to OSU . But remember you can poke us with your sticks all you wan't but we will bounce back and it will be with a VENGANCE. And as far as Mich reigning supreme in the Big 10 again not going to happen with Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State, and Penn State for you to deal with . The BUCKEYE NATION is down but far from out. Remember we won't be playing for a Big 10 title or a NC but we will still be playing you so it won't matter and we won't have to be conservative just a win will matter to us.

If you're going to shout a word, it's really a good idea to spell check it first. Look, I feel sorry for you. I was around for the Fab Five. I couldn't believe it when they took away all those wins (after all, I saw them, they were real wins and they were awesome). Living in denial is hard. OSU is going to give away maybe three years worth of wins. Maybe more. Your coaching staff is going to be completely turned over (yes, your assistant coaches knew or were complicit with this stuff). And it isn't just one player that did this stuff. I'm glad you support your school. But you can't really come up here and talk trash while the toilet in Columbus continues to overflow. In fact, if you really supported your school you would be on the OSU boards figuring out each and every bad apple and wanting them kicked out of your school. But then again, there's that denial thing...

Hard to know what would have happened if Pryor had come to Ann Arbor instead of Columbus. I don't live in Ann Arbor anymore, but I would hope the city doesn't have combination tattoo/drug parlors where athletes hang out and trade memorabilia for tats and weed (or worse). If TP had come here, the Rodriguez experiment might still be limping on, as the overall win-loss record might not have been as bad.. We certainly didn't dodge the bullet with RR, but we might have been DOA if Pryor had been part of the bargain. Practicegate is nothing compared to OSU's landfill of major violations. This makes me very grateful to have Denard Robinson, not only for his athletic prowess but for his integrity and leadership. He's the real deal. And so is Brady Hoke.

Maurice Clarett....Jim Tressel....Terrelle Pryor....are we starting to see a trend here in Columbus? The Ohio St. program has had a sketchy past but the NCAA and the media are like sharks with blood in the water now. More sanctions could very well be on the way. Just because Pryor is leaving OSU certainly doesn't mean the NCAA is anywhere close to being done but rather shows he IS admitting guilt. Why didn't Ohio St. AD Gene Smith and that goofy President show some compliance with the NCAA in the early stages may have "softened" the blows that are now coming there way instead of remaining quiet (or, worst yet, the Prez making a joke about who was going to get fired first). A piece of advice to Buckeye fans...channel some of your over-the-top hatred of Michigan instead toward your own football program and ask why this mess was allowed to happen in the first place and what should be done NOW before more damage is done. Then again, maybe nothing can done and they'll just have to accept what could be very severe penalties.

Personally I would like to think that even if Terrell had chosen Michigan, and he still acted the same way, the outcome would have been different. I believe RR would have reported the transgression immediately, to Michigan's AD. But Terrell may have never acted in this manner, if he had attended Michigan. Hopefully the entire climate would have been different at Michigan and that, along with peer pressure, would have prevented these events, in the first place.

Fan, I wish that there was a military draft and with TP leaving college, his draft status would revert to 1-A. He could go do something to repay this country for all the opportunies he has blown. He's not going to play in the NFL, unless it's the National Federal Lockup exercise yard for tax evasion and fraud. But somehow I think you already knew that and you are just stirring the pot with this fake support for a disgrace of a student athletic. And to all of you out there who feel adults are taking advantage of young people, there are 18-22 year olds putting their lives on the line right this second, so save the BS for the street corner. Lying and cheating are thought out processes and you have to do it willfully, it's not an act of omission. You sign on to play college sports, with the rules given to you before hand. Don't want a free education, work your way through school. BTW, how great would you feel going into a job interview this week with a degree for tsio? First question...Did you take any classes with TP? And how do you spell "Honesty" in C-bus? "D-o-n-t g-e-t c-a-u-g-h-t".

David Vande Bunte

Wed, Jun 8, 2011 : 3:33 p.m.

To add to what you said, there are thousands of NCAA athletes the same age as Terrelle Pryor who have been able to withstand the pressure to cheat. Obviously when you compare it to the brave men and women fighting in our Armed Forces, the maturity level needed to avoid cheating is insignificant...so lets compare apples to apples, and point out that the vast majority of NCAA student athletes are avoiding temptation too. Terrelle Pryor fails the character test miserably even when compared to his direct peers, not just those brave enough to enlist.

David Vande Bunte

Wed, Jun 8, 2011 : 1:23 p.m.

Not surprised at all. When we found out that the only way the Tattoo five would get to play in the bowl game was if they promised to return, I think we all knew that Terrelle Pryor was going to renege on the deal. I wouldn't be surprised at all if others who have been or could be implicated end up doing the same thing.

Pryor's perfidy goes much farther than just getting deals on skin art and cars. He wore a stick-on eye black patch with "Vick" printed on it for one game. This was his sign of "respect" for convict, Michael Vick. Pryor said in response to criticism of his "endorsement" --- ""Not everybody's the perfect person in the world. I mean, everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever. I think that people need a second chance." "Everyone kills people... ???!!! What a wonderful insight into Pryor's worldview and thinking ability. ;-) Wow, I thought Michigan's three year long crash and burn process under Rodriguez was spectacular: but ONCE AGAIN Ohio State University outdid Michigan. If Brady Hoke and Denard Robinson can't take advantage of all of this: then I'll just quit watching football altogether. But I really think: Michigan IS BAAACK!!

Might as well skip town while he still has the car. It's sad to think that someone is going to pay this guy big money in the NFL and he doesn't owe OSU a cent. Soon, Terrelle Pryor could not only be 0-0 against the Wolverines, but for his entire career at Ohio State. It's too bad they don't make cheaters forfeit instead of vacating games, so he could have the 0-3 record he deserves. The teams that were cheated against should get victories. It would be great to see Michigan get nine wins against Ohio State for every year Jim Tressel cheated to win. At any rate, I expect Ohio State to vacate at least five years' worth of victories against Michigan. That will put Michigan's advantage in the lifetime series back to an even less-attainable level for Ohio State. It couldn't happen to two nicer teams. Oh, and for anyone who thinks I have a double standard: I think the Michigan basketball team should forfeit all of the victories they vacated during the Ed Martin Fiasco, too. The difference is negligible to the team that does the vacating or forfeiting, but those who lost games to a team that cheated are the ones who really got a raw deal. I wouldn't even mind seeing Sparty get a win for the game in which the Fab Five helped, uh, "wipe" the Sparty logo after the game.

Terrell Pryor is a phenomenon and should have never been forced to play college football before going to professional sports. He is no different than Kobie Bryant or LeBron James. His athletic intelligence is far superior and we should have recognized and celebrated your intelligences like we would any other gifted intelligence. (Please see Multiple Intelligence research by Professor Howard Gardner, Harvard University) If you played a piano, you we would lift you up as a virtuoso. If you had superior traditional IQ, we would celebrate you as a genius. Find you place in professional football while we engage in stupidity, blaming you for not succumbing to NCAA 'idiot rules. (Please see ESPN commentator Bobby Knight's remarks; same subject) Like any other gifted youngster, we only saw that behavior which is different than the norm and not your God given gift! Only problem with this is that he was allowed to play in the sugar bowl. Thank goodness former coach did not sign him. DR = 1 million times more than TP

Big, big surprise, like there was gonna be any other outcome, talk about predictable! This part cracked me up: "We've talked about the emotional roller coaster that he is going through," James told The Plain Dealer, "and even if he was cleared 100 percent it was going to be difficult." You mean the things he brought upon himself, Pryor did this, his selfishness and ego did this, Mr. James. Pryor is an immature selfish guy, congrats TSIO on getting him 3 years ago, hahahahaha! Oh my gut hurts from laughing so hard! Pryor, you will never be a good pro QB, journeyman at best! Your life has already peaked. Go get your degree, it's all you'll have. I'm just not sure they'll want to see you in C'Bus, might want to look into what credits will transfer to another school, that is if you actually went to class.

Its either American pseudo-muscle cars (Chrysler 300, Charger etc) or ricer burners (Nissan 3fitty Z etc) for Pryor...so I'll take that bet.
