Ohio shirt pokes fun at Brady Hoke, Michigan's short tournament run

By Kyle Meinke

Ohio_Tshirt.jpg
Ohio handed the Michigan basketball team the worst upset in the school's tournament history last weekend.

Now, it's dancing on the grave.

The Bobcats are soaking up their victory with a playful shirt that reads "MichiGone" on the front and "Now you know! We are OHIO" on the back.

That's a not-to-subtle jab at Michigan football coach Brady Hoke, who has taken to calling rival Ohio State "Ohio." It has irked the Buckeyes, who returned fire by calling the Wolverines "That Team Up North," and also Ohio, whose basketball coach called it "disrespectful."

More on the shirt, from the website of College Book Store in Athens, where the it is being sold:

Those folks up in Ann Arbor seem to have been confused lately, frequently referring to a certain other school in our state as "Ohio" when well (sic) all know there's only one Ohio!

Well, now that the Bobcats have defeated them in the NCAA basketball tournament, we bet they know our name now! And if they don't, well, maybe you can help remind them by proudly wearing this shirt.

Ohio won its following game against South Florida and will play North Carolina this week in the Sweet 16. It is the highest-seeded team remaining in the tournament.

For a team that decries Hoke for the use of "Ohio", they quickly ceded the highground. Perhaps we should just call them "Hypocrites", so there is no confusion over who we call "Ohio."

Being an avid OSU fan, yeah MIchigan beat finally beat us. It was a close game to the finish but you guys won. That was 4 months ago and the Bobcats beat Michigan. Its amusing because it was by the same team that you refer to as OSU. Karma can be an SOB. I'm Buckeyes first but B1G second. You guys should seriously start focusing on Alabama as you "kick off" the 2012 College football season. We will see on national television if Michigan is legit. Do the B1G proud and then we can start talking about your November visit to the 'shoe. Beat the National Champs then you can talk all the smack you want. Can a Michigan fan please answer this question... Are you guys worried about Robinson's ball control? Watching several Michigan games last season I'm amazed to see how many times Robinson fumbles the ball. He better learn to hold on to the ball or Bama will tear him apart. He had a few fumbles against a mediocre OSU defense. To me, that is one of the keys to the game.

It's been an issue I suppose but I think if you looked at his fumble to carries ratio it's not way out of line. You have to take the good with the bad with D-Rob. To be honest, his interceptions worry me more. I hoping he can have a big senior year. With the schedule much tougher and the D-line hurt by graduation I don't think 11-2 is possible again. That said, I never would have thought it possible last year. I believe Michigan is headed in the right direction and the game this year in C'bus in going to be epic!

Hope u sell those shirts....u r out of the Tourney next game. Might have a lot of inventory left. Maybe you can hand them out @ the horseshoe to the first 114,000 fans....oops my bad the BIG HOUSE holds that many I don't know how many Ohio accommodates. Maybe 2200.

Im not implying you're not a fan. Not at all. And this has EVERYTHING to do with Coach Hoke cause this has EVERYTHING to do with Michigan. No one called osu Ohio before Hoke did it publicly. And JB wasn't trying to appeal to anyone. He's a Mich Man... so he did as Mich does. That goes for Dave Brandon, the current and future players, and fans. It was ohio yesterday, its ohio today, and will be ohio forever. GO BLUE!!!

DB, I'm a big OSU fan. A lot of us are not offended by Hoke's refering to OSU as "Ohio." It's funny. But when your basketball coach does it and gets beat by the Bobcats you have to admit its ironic... and kinda funny. Your boys are eating a little crow. Congrats on finally beating us last November. You finally got us. It was a great game. A freshman quarterback kept us in the game till the end. Had he not missed a few open receivers (freshman mistakes) it could have gone either way. At the end of the day you got the W and we got the L. Its over. I really think you need to start focusing on Alabama as you guys kick off College football season this year. I'm Ohio State first, Big Ten second. . Do the B1G proud and beat Alabama! But make no mistake about it... your beat down in the 'Shoe is coming in November.

I just can't believe what im hearing. Some or u should turn on your fan cards, but then again thats all that u r. "This is Michigan for God sakes." And Michigan is a FAMILY. Uh, DB, this isn't necessarily about coach Hoke. The point is coach Beilien chose to pick up the whole Ohio schtick too. Maybe it was his way of trying to appeal to the masses or in some way seek Brady's approval. Regardless, the whole Ohio thing had nothing to do with basketball until JB made it part of his lexicon. The name calling makes look us look a little delusional when we're not exactly dominating our rivals. Case in point, the repeated reference to "little brother" though they've had our number more times than not as of late. Yet this line of reasoning somehow makes me less a fan? C'mon, man!

Tue, Mar 20, 2012 : 10:10 p.m.

Hoke set himself and the rest of Michigan teams up for just this sort of 'Hoke' because he did insult Ohio University. Their chant is (and has been for more than 30 years): We are Ohio. O-HI-O. Ohio State has no such cheer and their fans chant various other things. If you are going to Observe history...call 'em 'the team down there'. Ann Arbor's coaching staff looks stupid for this hokey baloney. Play ball people, play ball. Stop talking trash and stop stomping around like this stuff actually matters to the real world.

Lorie - - If it is such a big deal about referring to OSU as Ohio then why do the OSU faithful constantly do it? Many times during a game half the stadium or arena will shout O-H followed by the other half finishing with I-O. Hmmmmmm. What is it they are spelling? And what is it that the band spells out before every football game? It is not OSU or Ohio State. (BTW it was the Michigan marching band that first performed the floating Ohio formation. Four years later the Ohio band picked up on it and started their tradition. And UM did it out of respect, not arrogance.) Don't the two fine universities in Ohio need to lighten up a bit and get a little more self esteem?

Jfl41

Wed, Mar 21, 2012 : 11:46 a.m.

I don't think so. Hoke was able to win so there wasn't much osu fans could say. I don't think beIlein was ready to join in. If you can't beat a mid major team, you should keep your mouth shut. Perhaps he's the right guy to turn this team around but as someone who can remember when um really contended in the 80s bast on talent rather than streaky 3 point shooting I hope it happens soon.

UM fans thought it was cute to disrespect tOSU by calling them OHIO and it blew up in your face. tOSU has beaten you in 9 of the last 11 football games and 17 of the last 20 basketball games. Call tOSU what you want, but you seem to call them the winner every time you play them. Instead of the "OHIO" insults started by your chubby coach why not try to put more talent on the football field and some white guys who can jump on the basketball court. You can down play your loss to the REAL Ohio in basketball all you want, but the fact is you played nothing like co-champs of the BIG. If you want to make dumb comments like OHIO, you should have the talent to back it up.

Looks to me that our so-called "slight" to the Bobcats might very well turn out to be a financial boon for them. You're welcome, Bobcats. Anyway, I say let the Bobcats have this moment. And hey, thanks to Michigan, their profile has been raised. Now maybe they'll finally get some respect from the people of their own state. Aw, who am I kidding? Once football season starts the Bobcats will still be considered nothing more than a scrimmage team for the Buckeyes to practice trick plays on. But there's always the shirts. Does anyone read Hoke's comments, watch the field when the ohio marching band is aboard, or know the history behind the marching band ? Hoke said he has called the bucks ohio since he was a boy. The bucks marching band spells out ohio on the field and always have. The Michigan band use to copy that spelling as a tribute and history buffs on both sides agree the Michigan band was the first to dot the 'i". That is respect. When I was a boy, I used to respect ohio - then their 80,000 drunkin truck drivers abused me at games and I was beaten up walking to my car - for wearing a Michigan sweatshirt w/ my mouth shut. Now I read their fans disrespect on my football site. I wish I was like Hoke and could respect ohio, but never will.

No doubt. A mob of buck fans were chasing my friend and I after John Cooper's last game for simply walking out of the Shoe with UM gear on. They kept shouting, in their very civilized and intelligent fashion, "What is the M for? MORON!!!" Luckily we ran into a huge throng of UM fans and they backed off. The loss to the Bobcat basketball team has no bearing whatsoever on the UM v. 'ohio' football rivalry. Hoke BEAT 'ohio' and resurrected the UM football program, and he can't spend his time worrying what the Bobcat program thinks of him. Kudos to them for beating our basketball team, but to say that Hoke's calling the bucks 'ohio' is an "ill-fated attempt at gamesmanship that now has transcended to embarrassment" is not only a bit of an overstatement, it's a completely overboard exaggeration. The bucks are 'ohio.' Period. And, if 'ohio' ever loses to MSU, Northwestern, Minnesota, or any other northern team, should they forever be embarrassed for losing to a different "team up North?"

Wally the Wolverine
