Ohio safety Jarrod Wilson joins Michigan's 2012 football recruiting class

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Michigan football program has added another 4-star recruit to its 2012 recruiting class, according to multiple reports.

Jarrod Wilson, a 6-foot-2 safety, chose Michigan over Penn State and Notre Dame during a Friday press conference at Akron (Ohio) Buchtel High School.

The Wolverine, GoBlueWolverine.com and MGoBlog.com were among the first to report the verbal commitment.

Wilson is the eighth player from Ohio in the Wolverines’ 18-member recruiting class. Verbal commitments are non-binding.

All four of the major recruiting websites (Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247Sports) rate Wilson as a 4-star prospect. Scout ranks him as the No. 10 safety in the nation while Rivals puts him at No. 13.

Thirteen of Michigan’s 18 recruits have a 4-star rating from at least one recruiting website.

Linebackers Joe Bolden, Royce Jenkins-Stone and James Ross, offensive lineman Erik Magnuson and defensive back Terry Richardson are the only other unanimous 4-star selections.

I don't know about all the bantering with the hairless nut fans here, but from watching the video on Mr.Wilson, the kid has great hands, alot of speed to the ball, and doesn't come down very easy once he has possession. I just wondering if he wants to play both sides of the game,I see him as a two way player safety/receiver, maybe kick return also, very similar to Sir Charles Woodson.. How far is Fremont from Akron ? I'm just saying.. Welcome Jarrod .. Those who stay !!

As a Buckeye fan, I'm a little surprised with such negative and positive remarks about Hoke. I like his personality, and his love for the University of Michigan. He's smart to be recruiting in Ohio. The last two heismann winners from michigan, were from Ohio. Bo knew it. Lloyd knew it (but lost that ability, when Tressel came to Columbus). I am confident in what Hoke is doing. I just hope, that he never recruits (along with everyone else in the Big Ten) players, who put their self interest in front the program. It's funny, but Michigan and OSU are in same boat now. It's a whole new era! GO BUCKS!!!!!

"...but Michigan and OSU are in same boat now." Help me understand what you mean by that ... are you saying: (a) Both programs are or have been under NCAA scrutiny, or (b) Now that OSU has been hobbled by loss of coach and QB they are on the same footing with Michigan?

The thing that really shines about this recruiting is that he has gotten back to the roots. Though it is said that California and Florida produce all the "quick " players, the midwest produces (traditionally) the best Big Ten teams, and Hoke has done just that. I like the recruiting philosophy of getting guys who know of the Big Ten landscape, who know of Michigan, with a few players from outside of the traditional recruiting base, i.e. from AZ, CA, FL, TX etc. But the bulk has always been from OH, MI, PA, IL, etc. I like the direction, and it seems like an awful lot of higher profile players were just waiting for their opportunity to come to Michigan to play. Even with an "unproven" guy like Hoke. But we'll only know in 3 years how it all turns out.

Ohio is a great football state, but that school to the north is best for the players and the smart ones are tired of carrying water for those 5 star buckeye celebrities.

Hoke was able to recruit talent to Ball State, for Pete's sake ... I think with the Michigan banner he can do better still. As for "over-recruiting" ... I don't get the sense that's Hoke's way of doing business. If he offers, he means it. Period. As for lack of five-stars ... as has been said by others, I'd rather have a team of four-stars than a few fives that are trying to showboat all the time. Finally, I'm quite certain that Hoke, Borges and Mattison know what the heck they're doing ... moreso than me or anyone else on this comment board. Revel in the commitments, hope they stick until signing, and let's strap in and watch what unfolds this fall. That's what it's all about isn't it? No guarantees. Just strap-em-up and slog it out in the trenches. All the better if the weather is miserable -- sleet and cold. I want to see offensive linemen with sod in their face masks. Hard to do on artificial turf, but they'll find a way.

@Chad I think your missing the point on all of this recruiting. Hoke has put together a very strong class and he still has 7 or 8 slots left to fill and he is saving them for high 4 star and some 5 stars that UofM is waiting on to decide and for them kids to make their way to A2 during the season to see the Big House on a official visit. This class so far is way stronger then anything Mr. Cluelass put together from 08-10. Also these kids are not scrubs that he getting from Ohio they all had very impressive offers from other big name programs and also these ratings fluctuate from rivals to scouts to super prep so I wait to see results on the field. Plus I can remember plenty of 5 stars that never panned out and plenty of 3 stars that did major work at Michigan like Hart, Braylon, David Harris, Dhani Jones. That is could good coaching and developing young talent and I'm sure Hoke and his staff will do just that. GO BLUE!

I'll say it again -- competitive young men seek a battle to fight with honor and integrity. It is their very nature. Brady Hoke is offering exactly that -- the opportunity to fight that battle on the gridiron. No short cuts, no schemes or systems ... just hard work, team, and pursuit of victory well fought and well earned. The recruiting numbers show the results ... young men who yearn to fight that battle are coming to Brady Hoke and his staff because they know Michigan offers what they seek to do. Some may scoff at this. I do not. Nor would Hoke. He has said as much. "Character wins in life; character wins in football." Young men in this age long to be men of character. It is a lost art in these times. Hoke offers it and it is no easy bargain. These young men know they are in the for the trial of their life. They *run* to this trial. They *will* prevail. And in the end we will see the Michigan tradition rise again. Mark my words. We are in good hands.

Chad, Chad, Chad...get smart. Sounds like you need an education. The Bucknuts have had some success recently, but every dog has their day, and you'll be crying in your milk soon. That school down South is on the way down and we are coming back to the top, which is our rightful place. We will soon own you as we have for the MAJORITY of the contests between the universities. Can feel you trembling from a 1,000 miles away...

I can't see anything wrong with the way Hoke is recruiting. He's pulling in some very solid players--regardless of whatever state they hail from. It's funny, no matter what the man does, there will always be a faction that will find fault. If he wins a national championship, I suppose some folks will say it doesn't mean anything unless he wins multiple championships. If he finishes with a top 2 or 3 recruiting class, a faction of folks will gripe about why it isn't number one. If he "gets" two five star players, a faction will complain about why he couldn't recruit at least three. Currently, the man is recruiting better than approx. 97% of all Division I schools, so how about we lay off the man? As for his past records, all I know is that he took losing teams and made them into winners. Hoke haters, I would advise you all to take a reasonable look at his record--you know like Auburn did with Gene Chizik. How'd that work out for them?

Chad...All-time Wins, All-time winning percentage. Not bad for having done nothing. I'll take all the 4 or 3 star players who want to play for MICHIGAN over 5 star headline seaking, can't figure out where they want to go (until they they pull out some hat at some all star? game). Its THE TEAM, THE TEAM,THE TEAM. Please refrain from using the term WE because WE don't need you and your negitive attutide. Hoke ain't no joke and he will show you. Give him the credit that is due to him and the staff for great recruiting so far. I think he knows far better than us the needs of the team, the character of the players he is recruiting than you. GO BLUE !!!!

One more thing, Michigan football has one shared nc since 1948. so since parody became apart of football we havent won squat. Lets dig deeper since the BCS era michigan had one season where they were in bcs title game talks. Only 1 Bcs bowl victory. 3 Rose bowl loses, bunch of 2nd tier bowl wins, a top 5 team that loses to a fcs team, what kinda of tradition is that. Im glad carr retired cause he was to conservative with leads, RR could never get a lead in a game. Now we have a guy with 2 winning seasons total at mid major programs with 0 significant wins. Never beat TCU or Utah so what has he done that was so great? Hoke is a joke thats why they hired mattison on D cause he cant hold it together on his own. They went all out too make sure Hoke doesnt fail.

Parody... Do you mean satire or actually mean a levelling of the quality of play, which is a different word? And he's not overrecruiting, he's got about 18 verbals. He's allowed 25 in the B1G. .. difficult to make sense out of some of these comments

.... I think you meant "parity". Unless you're post is a parodizing one. Seriously though, I think most of us are optimistic and hopeful at the same time with Hoke. He has an infectiously positive attitude and has for the most part talked the talk perfectly so far. You're right that we haven't seen his team perform on the field yet, but his records progressed really well at his last two schools.

@ Mick.. Give Hoke credit for what??? What has he done on the field??? What significant wins did he have at Ball St or SDSU. No conference titles with either school. Fact is he never had a job with expectations of the Rose Bowl every year. He coached with very little pressure and smaller fan bases. What other school has 20 commits before the season starts? Thats foolish and shows that this team wont be the 10 win team that will pull recruits with results on the field. All he is doing is attacking Ohio cause of the situation thats going down. Its a reason why Hoke is pulling all these Ohio guys, its because OSU didnt want them. Ohio has a lot of talent to share and the past 3 years RR didnt want OSU leftovers but Hoke does to impress us with useless early signing. If we are Michigan why so many recruits so early when the best of the best are still out there? Doesnt make much sense to me.

Man I'll tell you what, some of you guys are having a really hard time wanting to give Hoke the credit he deserves because of the apparent man crush some of you have/had on whatshisname. The MCC crowd just wants to be proven right somehow, comical! Do you care about him or the U-M program more? Just curious. Thank goodness the "King" of cheating and non-compliance reigns no more (what do you think about that Theo?) @Chad Williams, your comment made little sense to me and out here us locals don't say "Cali", we laugh at people who say that, take that as a public service announcement.

He is over recruiting. He playing it safe by using osu troubles as a way to get these recruits. He isnt showing me that he can get 5 star recruits that are gonna wait til feb to sign. We He wants them now so if he goes 8-4 in year one then he wont lose his current recruits. We act like RR never recruited in ohio. Roundtree maybe? On top of all this none of these players are really on OSU radar. OSU gets the players they want from ohio then recruits NATIONALLY. I hope this class doesnt consist of a bunch of guys from OHIO. Especially since everyone knows the southeast, texas, and cali boast a lot of talent also. The big ten isnt just about physical style of play. OSU has been the class because they have had better athletes as well. Wisc, Iowa have stuck around but they havent been consistant champs. To win NATIONAL championships you need to be physical as well as athletic cause its too many styles of play to be just one type.

Didnt Michigan just get a commitment from a four star lineman. I would call that national recruiting. keep the faith after all this is michigan.

So, you're part of his recruiting team? How do you know his approach? No Midwestern coach can have success without doing well in Ohio. It's a hotbed of high school talent, with only one major school (no, I don't count Cincinnati). Hoke needs lines into New Jersey, Louisiana and Texas, as well. But keeping the best of Michigan and making a major impact in Ohio is of primary importance here. As for Roundtree? OSU didn't want him. He was a Purdue commit because Purdue was the only major within 500 miles to offer. He liked Rodriguez because of the gimmick offense, but felt Morgantown was too far away. So Rodriguez was able to grab him from Purdue when he took the job here. He is probably one of the top 50 wideouts in college football right now, but he's no threat to skip his senior season unless he magically gets some bulk without losing speed, and learns to hold on to the ball.

Since, Michigan has all or almost all (depending on which web site you go by), does a verbal comitment mean that UofM has also resourved the scholarship for them? Or can 10 more recruits commit and then UofM can pick that ones it wants to except?

Looks like a nice crop, hard to tell right now and they are just verbal's. I doubt it will take Nebraska long to be hot on the trail of these verbal's. We need a positive growth year, now what I mean by that is Brady needs to show good improvement and as many wins as absolutely posible as in win the close ones. At this stage these kids are not part of the school in any way and we all know what it takes to get a kids attention, a winner, so this 2011 season is all important. I know many of you think this season is a big if but I think that the 2012 season depends on the outcome of the 2011 season and I'm talking about keeping these verbal commits. There's a new Bo in town and he's from Ohio to.

I can't believe that Michigan couldn't find someone under 160 pounds that could "grow" into playing safety and if not, maybe be a slot receiver. You know a young man with offers from MAC and Big East teams with half the "star" rating of Mr. Wilson. That was for all of those who have the couple of days started the "if Michigan wins more than 3 games it's all the WCiMFH's doing". Please, he never had a clue but Coach Hoke understands what's needed to compete in the Big Ten. And he's going out and getting what this program requires to win vs the top conference teams. Very good player and a super pickup for Michigan. Safety is an area we've had terrible depth and talent at for the last few years. Jarrod will be an impact player at Michigan before he's through. The Wolverines continue to plunder Ohio for talent. This is shaping up to be a great recruiting class. Go Blue!
