No surprise, Michigan's Brandon Herron is Big Ten's defensive player of the week
Considering Brandon Herron was named the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week on Sunday, Monday's announcement was no surprise.
The Michigan football linebacker was named the Big Ten Conference's defensive player of the week after scoring two touchdowns in the Wolverines' 34-10 win over Western Michigan.
Herron is the first defensive player in school history to score two touchdowns in a game, and the interception return for a score was the longest in team history.
The Wolverines haven't had a conference defensive player of the week since Brandon Graham won it on Sept. 29, 2008.
The league's offensive player of the week was quarterback Russell Wilson, a transfer from North Carolina State making his first start for Wisconsin. Wilson accounted for 317 yards (255 passing, 62 rushing) and three touchdowns in a 51-17 win over UNLV on Thursday night.
Nebraska kicker Brett Maher (4 field goals) and Penn State kick returner Chaz Powell (95-yard TD) shared the league's special teams player of the week. Illinois linebacker Houston Bates (5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery) was named freshman of the week.
