Mississippi State routs Michigan football team in Gator Bowl

By Pete Bigelow

ROBERT-ELLIOTT.jpg

Robert Elliott and the Mississippi State football team had plenty to celebrate Saturday at the Gator Bowl.

Melanie Maxwell | AnnArbor.com

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An extra four weeks of practice, an opportunity to heal from key injuries and a change in venue.

None of it mattered Saturday.

When the Michigan football team finally took the field for the Gator Bowl, it turned in a performance reminiscent of so many others from this tumultuous season. The offense flashed encouraging signs, including big runs from Denard Robinson on the game’s opening drive. But the Wolverines defense and special teams were dreadful.

The result was an 52-14 loss to No. 21 Mississippi State at EverBank Stadium in the team’s first bowl appearance in three years, a game that may be Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez’s last in Ann Arbor.

His future was not immediately addressed after the game, but Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon has repeatedly said he would render his evaluation of the program following the Gator Bowl.

As it turned out, he need not have waited.

The game was a carbon copy of so many others Michigan played this season - promising start, an undersized defense overpowered and special teams gaffes.

Robinson, Michigan’s MVP, threw two first-quarter touchdown passes to give the Wolverines a 14-10 lead. But Mississippi State (9-4) outscored the Wolverines, 21-0, in the second quarter and took control.

Michigan mistakes keyed their surge.

Robinson threw an interception on a third-and-13 play with 11 minutes left in the second quarter. When Mississippi State took over, their ground-oriented attack bulldozed the Michigan defense on a 12-play, 43-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown.

Earlier, Mississippi State’s Marvin Bure blocked a Will Hagerup punt. The Bulldogs capitalized with a 42-yard field goal from Derek Depasquale. By halftime, Michigan trailed 31-14.

True to their season-long form, the Wolverines tried to find their way back into the game in the third quarter.

But they wasted a 53-yard punt return from Junior Hemingway when kicker Brendan Gibbons missed a 35-yard field goal attempt.

On the season, Gibbons was 1-for-5. Overall, Michigan kickers went 4-for-14 on field-goal attempts.

Their last chance to climb back in the game came with 1:13 remaining in the third quarter. Trailing 38-14, the Wolverines charged down the field. But they again came away with no points when Robinson fired an incomplete pass into the end zone on 4th and goal from the MSU 7-yard line.

For the Wolverines, it marked a dismal end to the season. Michigan started the season on a five-game winning streak and ended it on a three-game losing streak.

For Rodriguez and Brandon, now comes the hard part.

Maybe you're seeing it now? WHO says there's loss of booster donations? Prestige? WHAT prestige? Junk food? Bill Martin's folly? Another disastrous football season? Who is it who doesn't get it?

Holmes: RR may have three years left on his contract but he won't be @ Michigan coaching. Wake up. They'll buy him out. The loss of alumni $ and prestige is far greater than the 2.5 mil the university will have to cough up to get rid of him. It's beyond me why can't you understand this simple solution.

Holmes "an AD that consistently backs him" What university AD are you talking about, because that hasn't been happening at UM? I suspect that by the end of this week you will be one of the commenters we won't be seeing here anymore.

Actually, it took Brandon TEN YEARS to scrap what he acknowledged was ketchup-flavored cardboard at Domino's. And Brandon himself has contributed millions to the UM, so he is a donor, too. Other than Martin's Folly, how many empty seats have you seen at the Big House? And Brandon's had nearly a year to do what he should have done from the get-go, as he knows better than any of us all the nonsense that occurred with RichRod. Given his failure at UM and track record at Domino's (and before that as a junk mailer), you can project that it'll take him seven years (and a new contract!) to do what he should have done nearly a year ago. If your eggs are cracked, that means you'll NEVER get chickens -- but RichRod forever! Isn't that like shooting yourself in the foot? And confusion? RichRod is STILL UM football coach and has three years left in his contract.

Everyone bashing Denard?? Before this game every post I read talked about how Denard this and Shoelace that.I agree that yall need to make some changes, but everything that yall are complaining about today are the things that would crush us yesterday. Our defensive players said alot of the problem was that on both sides of the ball Michigan was very predictable.

Mookie In 3 years, the team is 2 games below where it finished after the 2007 season. How in the world is that progress? You can't use the 2008 season as the benchmark to measure progress. Producing the worst season in modern Michigan football history should have been enough to terminate him right then. It's not what you subsequently use as your yard stick. I'd also argue that the team is actually worse this year than last year. The blowout losses in 2010 are much worse than the losses last year.

@mookienation: can you please give your definition of the word "substantial"? i think we may differ on what that word actually means.

Sean T.

Sun, Jan 2, 2011 : 7:03 a.m.

Mookienation, Denard is not a QB. I've watched better passers at Ford Field this year and they are high School QB's. His release is slow, he lacks arm-strength and his accuracy is abysmal beyond 15 yards. I haven't seen him complete a pass between defenders or thread the needle. But I have seen him pass to wide open guys and I'm sure you know that any one of us on this thread can do that. RR cannot have success without special athletes and that means every blue moon he may have a good year, but it shows his coaching is poor and inadequate.

UofM hasn't been selling out its season tickets reserved for professors and physicians. They've been offered to lower ranking employees the last couple of years. Also, Michigan returned a bunch of unsold Gator Bowl tickets. Sounds like Michigan fans are voting with their wallets for an "improved recipe" (final product).

Sun, Jan 2, 2011 : 2:49 a.m.

Rich Fraud you will not be missed. I can not see how it is possible for a rational AD to overlook your entire embarresment of Michigan football. I will not celebrate anything UofM involved until RR is fired. It is what RR has earned it is what RR deserves.

mookienation

Sun, Jan 2, 2011 : 2:04 a.m.

He's improved every year. Yes, we're still very flawed, but the improvements from year to year are actually substantial. These last three games have been embarrassing. The offense needs to improve and the defense REALLY needs to improve. But I seriously think we're a few tweaks away from being a really good team. If Denard's passing skills improve during the next eight months our offense has the potential to be Oregon-like next season. And I have a hard time believing that our defense won't improve. How can't they?

three more years! three more years! sorry... bear with me. just trying to get in Holmes1's mindset. it's not easy. my brain's not as big as his. 'Domino's "pizza" customers have nothing to do with the "product" they're "served."' really? didn't domino's just change their recipe because the customers voted with their wallets. sales dropped, thus forcing dominos execs to do something. true, the regular fans don't have as much say as the donars (sic). but, donors are fans too. that's one of the reasons they donate. now, i am no donor, but let me think as one... hmmm, i gave (or regularly give) big bundles of cash to the football program and the university. i have very expensive but exceptionally located seats in the big house. hmmm, am i happy with the state of the program right now? hmmm, should i continue donating? now, i'm not clairvoyant like you say GoblueinNE_PA claims he is, BUT i can extrapolate on the trends of the fans and imagine that it extends at least in part to the donors (who are - as stated above - also fans). in this scenario, donations is the equivalent of sales. so, my (educated) guess is that donations have or are threatening to drop. a prudent CEO might change the recipe at this point... espcially one with a track record of doing so. so, are we really counting our chickens before they hatch? maybe. but those eggs certainly appear to be cracking...

@Robrt Granville "How can you possibly imagine a winning season with a new coach. None of the coaches being discussed run the spread or the 3-3-5. It would be several more years of transition." Because GOOD coaches coach to the talent they have, not for the talent they wish they had. Why would running a 3-3-5 AGAIN be a good thing? If any coach comees in here saying he wants to run that system, he should be institutionalized. It is a FAILURE on every count. He took the weakest section of the defense and had FIVE of them on the field. Teaching people offense is not as hard as Rich Rod has tried to convince people it is. Lloyd Carr ran a version of the spread in his last game as coach. He had less than a month to prepare his team for it. Guess what happened? Thats right the last bowl win ever at UM. This "learn the system" crap is more people thinking systems win over players The new coach will bring in better players, AND will not put the team on probation Once a new coach comes in and has the same record as Rich Rod, the Kool Aid crowd will say he didn't improve the team, OR the even more ridiculous "he won with Rich Rods players". I have absolutely ZERO respect for Rich Rod. I do not think he is a "nice" or "decent" man. I think he is convicted cheater. If it were my decision he would have been terminated IMMEDIATELY upon the FIVE major infractions. No questions asked, no buy out, no nothing. Let his sue me for it. His lawyeres are so stupid they didnt even know to get the so-called promises from WVU in writing, so I am sure a first year law student at UM would blow this clown out of the water. I can not and will not support the athletic department financially as long as Rich Rod is part of it. That would include a 13-0 season.

Just got done watching on the DVR. It was sunny today in Seattle and I guessed that I'd feel better going for a hike than watching the game live. 1. So glad we spent the last four weeks "focusing on fundamentals". Apparently kicking 35 yard field goals and players knowing when they are supposed to be on the field are reserved for "advanced skills". 2. I don't know what offense Craig James was watching, but what I saw was our typical strong first drive, followed by seven points for the rest of the game including a big fat *zero* in the second half. 3. No one pointed it out, but DRob seemed to be on a tight leash today as far as running went- 46 yards on the first drive and then 39 for the rest of the game? That wasn't just the MSU defense, it was offensive play calling. 4. We still can't tackle. Maybe RR teaches that in year four? 5. We still get gassed in the first half. Under which rock are the Barwis Koolaiders hiding lately? 6. Miss State was 8-5 this year, just one more win that our 7-5. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking there are any more than their #21 ranking. Anyone else remember when beating #21 was an assumption around here? 7. Even though I skipped through the ads and halftime, I still feel like I wasted two hours of my life watching a bunch of under-coached kids try their best only to fail big-time again. Another tough Jan 1 for the Big 10+2, but I don't care all that much about the bowl games. I thought the Big 10 season was much more fun when it was round-robin and the two most important things for Michigan were beating OSU and winning the Big 10 title. Hopefully we all get more to cheer about next year.

UM didn't do anything unusual for a Big Ten team at the bowl game. Had Tate Forcier been able to play, UM would have at least been more competitive, but putting all chips on Denard Robinson was RR's error in judgement during this season. Thank God for Iowa and Illinois, without their wins the Big Ten would have suffered a total wipeout. I don't expect the Bucks to win.

Some think that he'll go to the 49er's which I don't buy cause they have Management issues. *Seeking a GM and whatnot* And then the others, who say he'll return to Michigan. Perhaps you are the one that needs a course in reading comprehension. If anyone is claiming to be clairvoyant, that would be you. I see you claim that I'm "ignoring all the facts" about DB. What facts are you referring to? I see nothing in your posts; no facts of any kind. All I see is some bluster. "Actually, reading your posts, one after the other, you appear to make no sense." I've stated that again and again: The sense is that of the AD, which I'm sorry you don't understand, which is why YOU, not I, posts here again and again. Angry? No. I suggested trying to get a life beyond UM football, which, for years (not just RR), has been failing the Ann Arbor community. AND isn't much of a life, anyway. Guess you, like the other commenters, don't carefully read other posts. What UM needs is not only new football coach but athletic director, president, and regents. I am very sorry that you and other commenters do not understand that, which demonstrates your UTTER ignorance about how the UM "works," which is to say doesn't. NONE of these issues will be resolved any time soon! Count on it! Again, sorry you don't understand that, as you can't, as you're clueless.

Holmes 1 and Robert Granville must be Theo and Tater trying to be incognito. I think the Kool-Aid has now turned into Nyquil for the Rich Rod lovers cause now the ones defending him are just completely spaced out. For real people he is finished at UofM and for many good reasons. It has been nothing but transfers, poor recruiting, NCAA violations, trying to run a 3-3-5 in the Big 10, lawsuits, 1-11 VS the Top 25, no improvement week after week, back yard pick up offense, etc. Oh by the way where have these super elite freakish fast and chiseled athletes that Barwis transforms recruits into, all I have seen is a rash of injuries in the past 3 seasons. Every single game in the past 3 years has been has been so unorganized and who can forget the sideline melt down versus OSU in the shoe in 08. Face it this guy is a failure and Dave Brandon knows so and he will do whats best for UofM and fire him.

Bring proof of insurance Tuesday morning and DB will sign over the title to him and give you two sets of keys. Remember all deals are final and you are not allowed to operate him in the state of Michigan. Feel free to put him on your (out of state) mantle, dust him occasionally, polishing is optional. Seriously, he is LESS likely to have a winning season next year. The non-conference portion of the schedule will likely knock him off in a few of the games (SDSU, ND, etc.).

UM has one more battle to fight - RR against UM in court when he tries to make UM pay for the full buyout. I joined this forum to follow the RR circus. I've mentioned more than once how he operated at WVU and how he hasn't changed at UM. Not saying "I told you so", but I might have hinted. I'm a true troll here. I respect what UM has done in the past, but don't think much of the past 3 years. I'm not a dedicated fan of UM, but enjoy watching them when they play "real" football. Do yourself a favor and get over this hatred of MSU. Take care of your own team and the rest will fall in line. I'll miss all of you if RR is gone next week, but I'll gladly remove myself from this forum if that happens. I hope, whatever happens next year, you all have a great season. UM was down 20-0 at half but we rallied in the 2nd half. On the tying drive, Leach was intercepted @ the Wash. 7 yd. line w/ :44 left in the game. Yeah, we lost. But we were proud of Bo and the team. Michigan set some records today: The 52 points allowed by Michigan were the most by the Wolverines in a bowl game in school history. Their 38 point margin of defeat also set a school record. Michigan allowed 34 or more points for the eighth time in the last nine games. Great job, RR.

No surprise that we lost but I didn't expect the absolute thrashing we got from Miss State. Unbelievably pathetic. An understatement to say it was embarrassing. No one can seriously mount a convincing argument that this team can improve under RR. Three years of disorganized, undisciplined and technically deficient play says it all. Can't say I've been very proud of the team since the RR era began. Many of us have been posting for the end of RR's tenure since last year. Thankfully this abomination of U of M football will come to its long awaited conclusion on Monday when RR is fired. Harbaugh. A new era begins. Tradition, Integrity, Leadership.

If they keep Rich Rod, if you look at next years schedule here is what you will see. Non Conference 2-2 MAYBE 3-1 I think ND has improved from where they were when UM played them, and Brian Kelly will have a whole season under his belt. He also had a bowl win in season ONE. SDSU is the one where it could be interesting. I am not convinced UM will beat Brady Hokes boys As far as the Big Ten season, the outcomes look worse to me: They will likely start out 2-0 with wins over Minnesota (good bet) and Northwestern (maybe) Then comes the Spartans (pretty much a loss). They will then beat Purdue at home, then comes a four game losing streak. I see no chance against Nebraska and OSU. Iowa and Illinois (with their QB a year better) on the road will be likely losses. That comes to 5-7 for the season and 3-5 in the Big Ten. With a coaching change I would say 7-5 is possible, with one more win in the Big Ten and one more in non-conference. I don't care who they hire, as long as RR is no longer he coach. He is a convicted cheater. A known liar, and the worst coach in Michigan history. I am sure he will be happy in Muncie Indiana. Beating MAC schools could do him some good.

"Michigan suffers school's worst bowl loss to Mississippi State in Gator Bowl" (espn.com) With this bowl game, UM under RR is 15-22 and 1-11 against ranked teams. Michigan lost six of its final eight games. "Asked what case he will make to save his job, Rodriguez said 'None.'" There isn't a case to be made. Finally an honest answer from RR.

@bernie: Oh come on, you can't get all over the fans for expecting more. It's all about matchups. Other than Michigan and MSU, every one of these B10/11 teams competed against the SEC, and Michigan would not have stopped anybody in the country, SEC or not. But you can't argue about PSU--they competed well and lost a close game that they could have won. Same with Northwestern (who really has no defense at all and an injured all B10 QB). MSU? Who knows--but they played well all year. I don't know if the B10 is good or not--I tend to think not so much at this point, but let's not be critical for us thinking that we should be better.

One thing that nobody has been mentioning about RR's poor performance in three years at Michigan is that this, in a test against an SEC team (where we don't have the Big Ten argument about slower and bigger players), a like-manned (size and speed) team just blew out UofM. RR packing party on Tuesday...be there.

heartbreakM

Sat, Jan 1, 2011 : 7:21 p.m.

The reasons that people give to keep RR is because of potential rather than results. Fine. But each year, the team has gotten worse from start to end of year, lost if not blown out by any ranked team, and basically today's performance is the worst ever performance by any Michigan team in any bowl game. And you can't tell me that we played the best team we ever played. Those RESULTS seal the fate. Potential means nothing. And it's funny when any stupid announcer like Craig James says that RR is a good coach. Based on what? Based on losing to any good team at a tradition and resource rich school like Michigan for 3 straight years?

I find it unblievable that some of the UM fans still believe the Big Ten is the top tier of NCAA football. You are living in a fantasy world that ended more than 10 years ago. "Storied programs"....what a joke. Look at the bowl games today and the list of national champions for the past ten years. The SEC makes the Big Ten look like a junior high school league. The elitist attitude expressed by a few of you is incredible.

What good offense? I did not see any good offense out there today. Maybe for a drive or 2, but that offense was horrible. But not really a whole lot different than against the other MSU, Iowa, OSU, PSU. The only good offense I saw in the last 8 games was against Illinois and that was just a fluky type of thing. And our win was sealed by a QB who was not even at the game today. At one point, in first half, we were outpossessed about 20 mins to 8. That is HORRIBLE offense. I didn't think things could get worse after these last 3 dismal years of Michigan football, but I was wrong. Today it did. It was much worse, and a continuation of the RR embarrassment that started 3 years ago. Today, the wolverines were outplayed, outclassed, outscored and outcoached on every level. RR is history, and after the Orange Bowl, I expect there will be an announcement from the pizza man. On Tuesday, I certainly hope he not only fires RR, of course with all the platitudes and politically correct gratitudes, but also announces that he has hired Harbaugh. It's been a very long and sad 3 years for Michigan football.

mgoblue48348: lol (the projectile vomiting part) This (RR situation) has been too easy to predict and the reason for some kool aid drinkers might be attributed to this normalcy bias syndrome. NORMALCY BIAS: It has severe consequences. When people dont face the facts of an imminent disaster such as financial crisis, RR, or act to protect their loved ones or their assets from danger that might be developing around them, the negative effect that the disaster has on them is much greater. People who face the situation early and start taking measures to alleviate the impact that the disaster has on their loved ones and their assets are more likely to survive the disaster and even, in some cases, benefit from it.

Sat, Jan 1, 2011 : 6:49 p.m.

Judge the man by what he does, not who he is. In three years, RR has done a lot good things outside of football but he is simply over his head at Michigan as far as preparing for big time competition. Brandon needs to do a better job of research for the next football coach. JH may be a sexy choice but better to focus on coaches who can do more with less while stay true to his work ethics - meaning staying humble regardless how successful he becomes. Michigan should not be a dream job - a destination. Rather, a program that can progress and embrace the lyrics of its fight song - Leader and the Best.

Well, you guys know that I've defended Rodriguez pretty strongly throughout the year. But after today's game, I cannot find a valid reason to retain him as our head coach. It was an absolute travesty. I know he's going to be successful elsewhere, but this really was his chance to shine with a fully healthy team. Instead, his players were outmatched and his schemes easily defended. This is unacceptable at any program at the country, and even moreso when you're one of the highest paid people at your position. I've heard from inside sources that Gary Patterson's agent was contacted by Dave Brandon this week. It's going to be an interesting ride, for sure.

What would Bo Schembechler want in 2011??.... I was curious, so through a medium I just talked to him. Listen to this dialogue... Question to Bo: Should we be sad or happy with the gator loss? Answer from Bo: In a sick perverted way, Happy. Let me ask you this --What if we had lost a close battle with Miss State 41-38? What if, gasp, we did the improbable and won the gator? It would have sent us on a course of indecision for another year or so, would it not? Two more years of suffering, then the inevitable ax in 2013. In heaven, I am not at all a Rich hater, because as a person, and as an innovator, he is unquestionably like-able and somewhat gifted, but like some alumni and the regents, I now think it is time for a change. Right now. No more wait and see. Beating Illinois and Purdue in November well, were, in hindsight, psyche jobs on all of us. Even Woody up here wasn't quite sure what to make of the Illinois and Purdue wins. Those ugly wins steadied our nerves in heaven and earth, if only temporarily. You take away those two win-ugly games, a) we are not even in a bowl, and RR would likely be fired already and b)we would have started the season 5-0 finished the season 0-7. See what I am saying? As it turns out we finish 2-6 with the gator loss. Over the span of 3 years, I mean really!? How much more can we take? Where are the recruits and where is the team depth? Wow. The regression of special teams and defense is historic. Meteoric demise. So you see the lopsided gator loss makes this whole next step pretty straightforward. Question: Bo, what do you want in 2011? Answer from BO: this and the following-- Bring in Harbaugh now. Jim just win 6 to 8 reg season games in 2011 and build from there. You have a great schedule next year. Keep Denard and teach him what it takes to play in the NFL (at any position). Denard will learn more from you about the NFL than he will from RR. Remind Denard of Desmond. A wide receiver who won the Super Bowl MVP with two TD runbacks. Jim, keep the key core players. Develop your youth. You can win a championship in a few short years. It can be done that fast, yes it can. We don't need 6 seasons to build a program. We don't need 6 million for a new training equipment. We just need you Jim and your unquestionable drive. We need your recruits, moreover, we need your smart recruits. How about a few all american academic athletes on your team too? From heaven I say this --Come back home Jim! Stick around for 10 years, and leave a big string of Michigan Man replacement coaches in waiting behind you, coaches who themselves become legends. Then, go in the NFL, Jim, and be the best dadgum head coach you can be and kick some serious butt in 2020. And Rich, I wish you well. Rich, go lead a major FBS team (like Miami) that vies for a national championship a couple times in the next decade, because you too can go to a program and have instant success. You too can overcome. This is what I want in 2011. Bo I have a few more questions! The medium tells me he's fading from here view.....

I'm pretty sure the kool-aid drinkers will allege Rodriguez was a victim of Project Monarch, too. The NCAA, The Detroit Free Press, "The Haters," the field goal kickers, the defense, the disenchanted players who left, the other teams in the Big Ten, and soon to be Dave Brandon and Jim Harbaugh, all key conspirators in his downfall. Well played Project Monarch, well played.

When U-M went ahead 7-0 I was hoping this would be a good day for Big Blue but then reality sunk in when the defense couldn't stop MSU at all. When RR is let go in a few days it will be due in large part to the inability to stop anyone on defense. Also, when U-M gets behind, Denard tends to press a little too hard and tries to force throws into traffic even when there are no defenders near him and he could easily make 10 yards running. I am also disappointed in all the dropped passes in key situations by the receivers and why they quit throwing to the tight ends after they had lots of success with them in the first half. Lots of things to be disappointed in. Recruiting will be the key in digging out of this mess.

NO IMPROVEMENT = NO JOB! Beyond stupid on defense and it was RR's idea to bring in the 3-3-5. I thought even his staff was smart enough to recognize a 4th and short situation called for something else besides 3 DL's on the line of scrimmage - WOW this is not even to high school standards of coaching. They can either jump on board with the new coach, or become 'haters' and 'trolls' themselves (not that any such thing actually ever existed). I gave him a chance at michigan but what confuses me is when changing systems ussually the defense comes along fast than the offense. I think he has to go for this reason, I agree there are alot of young players on defense but they did not get any better which tells me it's not the kids but the coach. BillMK, Many of the so-called "haters" have been stating the same reasons as the latter part of your post. Actually, many of the "haters" have posted factual and statistical information to support the reasons why they believe RR shouldn't be our coach. RR has been consistent in his inadequacies and responsibility to the program, thus making it easy for us "haters" to point out his many flaws. When RR went for a field goal when down by 24 points and with so much offensive talent and a consistently horrible field goal kicker, I was flabbergasted. I was a supporter of RR, and I stress WAS.

newlander, A quality new coach (Harbaugh, Miles, Hoke) may not win a B10 title next year, but they will have this team playing tough, hardnosed football and competing. And no, it won't take three years. It will be NEXT YEAR. Michigan will have virtually these same players and they will be stronger both physically and mentally and they will be hitting some people and competing. They may go 7-5, but those losses will be hard earned for the winner and it will begin to look like a Michigan football team again...and they will not get laughed off the field by anyone, like they've done too many times to count in the last three years. I personally can't wait.

Craig James brought up a valid point: IF the savior known as Jesus Chr.....errr, I mean Jim Harbaugh does come to AA what will he have to work with? Especially on the defensive side of the ball? If you think Bama beat up MSU today wait until they get ahold of Michigan. My god they might score 100 on them.........good stuff wolvies. GOOD stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wrote this on previous thread and wanted to re-post here. In this game RR has managed to break not 1, not 2, but 3 records of futility for our beloved program: -Most pts given up in a bowl by U-M -Worse Bowl loss in our history -Gator Bowl record for most pts. by one team RR is the King..............of futility!!!

RR was brought in to do some things that needed to be done. Unfortunately, too many other things were not done. It is obvious and inescapable that Michigan football needs and will have a new coach and staff. I am not a Rodriguez-hater by any means, and I loathe those who are they never gave him a chance, and their objections and grudges were based on prejudices and inconsequentialities. Neither do I believe that Michigans misfortunes are entirely his fault. In addition, I recognize that replacing the staff may lead to a series of short tenures, as happened at Michigan State and Notre Dame. Nonetheless, the misfortunes and misadventures persist. A lack of concentration and play discipline, a secondary that is not only inexperienced but disinclined to tackle, the hiring of an inept defensive coordinator all these can be attributed to the coaching staff. A longstanding shortage of first-rate talent antedates this staff, and amplifies the effect of injuries. But whatever the problem, failure requires change. When one is recruited to a research faculty position at Michigan, one is typically given everything available with the expectation that one will be producing after three years or so. If one is unlucky though talented, if one does not fit in with existing personnel, if the grants just arent there, if one is a nice person all these may generate sympathy and even affection. But one must still produce or leave. Even tenure, at least in the medical center, guarantees a title but not necessarily a budget or a lab. No position at Michigan is guaranteed. Perhaps Coach Rodriguez would have been an effective offensive coordinator. In many ways, he moved the program in the right direction. In a way, it will be unfair to him if his successor should benefit from his efforts, as would the whole program. But this is not about fairness; it is about success.

It is refreshing to see what a good defense can do for an average offense they just made Denard look very average while their QB Relf looked like the real deal and we all know who the better QB is. This game reminded me of Penn State and was equally frustrating. Side note another record shattered today most points scored in the Gator Bowl ever.

I just feel terrible for all of the faithful Michigan fans everywhere that have had to endure such a pitiful coaching performance over the last three years. I also feel terrible for the current and past players as well as the University. It is so painful to watch what once was an extremely competitve and proud and, many many times downright dominate football program drop to this level. The idiots out there that think this AD should listen to fans who still believe in the tooth fairy and keep this coaching staff on are part of the unbelievable record setting, embarrasing, pathitic low that this program must and will elevate from. To further defend in any way, shape or form the current staff and prettend that next year will be better shows just how mis-guided some of the so called fan base really is. Michigan will be back! We can't erase what has happend but DB can make sure that it doesn't continue. What a crummy day!

heartbreak "why does anyone think that our offense was any good? They were dreadful today, and in every game of consequence this year (count, all 6 losses)." Pure Kool-Aid smoke & mirrors. ecmichman... Craig James was a joke today. In the 1st half he said RR should get another year because "he has 1/2 the team doing well" (meaning the O. Then in the 2nd half he said that "UM needs to improve 2/3 of the team, the D and special teams", and also said something like "I'm not sure anyone could win at Michigan". Somehow between the 1st and 2nd halves he discovered there were 3 parts to a team and not only 2. Can we get him to coach at OSU?

Once again, U-M's "great offense" gets shut down by a team that actually plays defense. Spare me the gotta-give-him-more-time meme, half the coaches who won national titles in the last 10 years were in their 3rd year or less (Bob Stoops, Jim Tressels, Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Larry Coker). It was unbelievable how Craig James kept heaping compliments on this offense. It does not work against physical, athletic defenses. U-M was exposed as an inept team that once again had coaches arguing on the sideleines, defenders not knowing where to even line up, and the usual poor fundamentals (how many dropped passes and missed tackles??). Too many steps backward under RR. Let him go so he can build a legacy at a MAC or C-USA program. This is way over his head.

Disclosure -- I'm a "hater" Michigan under Rodriguez is awful, and will not get better. Next year, several years, forever. Rodriguez has been trying to recreate WVU with Pat White and Steve Slaton. It's not happening. And Robinson at DC is simply a failure. He is gone. Goodbye.

Sat, Jan 1, 2011 : 5:01 p.m.

I'm no Michigan fan, and even I believe they shouldn't be this bad. At this point, any other coach would be an improvement. Michigan truly needs to concentrate on finding a coach who emphasizes stability and get over their delusions of winning national championships with a flashy coach like Rodriguez. Michigan has shared a total of one championship in the last 60 years. It's not going to happen. Finishing strong in the Big Ten with a defensive minded coach is a much more realistic goal.

Larry Weisenthal

Sat, Jan 1, 2011 : 4:59 p.m.

I think that Brandon did himself a favor by waiting until after this game. No one can seriously criticize him for changing head coaches, now. It's not just that Michigan's defense was terrible, along with special teams. The offense was good, but not close to being great. Good teams shut Michigan down pretty well. I'd love to see Harbaugh get the job, but I did a little bit of an internet search, and I think that his first wife, with 3 children, lives in Oakland. He's got two younger children with a second wife, but I wonder if he'd be willing to move away from the SF Bay area, with three children still living there.

well Pete did this change your tune on RR? I supported him in 08 even though the team was terrible and it was his fault...about mid way through last year, I saw it for what it was: poorly coached team. I dont mean to pile on...but I was right and RR is a joke of a coach and did an absolutely TERRIBLE job at Michigan. Now he gets to skate off with 2.5 million buyout... Lets hope our athletic dept. never makes this type of mistake again.

Sat, Jan 1, 2011 : 4:54 p.m.

Exposed! Everyone knew U-M was bad but RR's saving grace was the supposed "great" offense he created! NOT TRUE! This is not a great offense - its a good offense with a great player but against good teams they are exposed as "good" - nothing more! The offense hurts the defense, which has enough trouble on its own. Today, the offense failed to score in the red zone numerous times and killed any chance for the defense to catch its breath! For those thinking coach RR has the offense and only needs a defense and special teams, that myth was exposed today beyond doubt. The last two games U-M score three touchdowns total? The RR experiment is over and he is not a good coach for the Big Ten - time to go!

Sat, Jan 1, 2011 : 4:54 p.m.

why does anyone think that our offense was any good? They were dreadful today, and in every game of consequence this year (count, all 6 losses). Take out the first drive, and DR was horrible, no better than any game from his frosh year. Craig James kept talking about how our offense is so great, but all I saw was a bunch of poor running plays, no pass game whatsoever, and containment of DR which rendered him completely ineffective (other than first drive). Unlike Mississippi State, RR showed that he was true to form and made no adjustments. I counted down the last 20 seconds of the game and celebrated more than last night at midnight for the end of the RR era. What a blight on Michigan's history.
