Michigan's Ricky Barnum, Brandon Herron among 6 notable players left off travel squad
EVANSTON, Ill. — The Michigan football team's first road game of the year sorted out a few things regarding the program's depth chart.
The two biggest names left off the travel squad were junior left guard Ricky Barnum and senior linebacker Brandon Herron.
Sophomore Michael Schofield took his place in the starting lineup, which he has done since Barnum went out.
Herron, who was the hero of the season opener against Western Michigan, did not make the travel squad despite being called "100 percent" by Hoke. Herron suffered a leg injury earlier in the year.
The senior, who plays on the weak side, became the first Michigan player to score two defensive touchdowns in a game in a memorable opener against Western Michigan. He returned an interception 94 yards — the longest in school history — and later scored on a fumble return.
He is the first Michigan player since Tom Harmon to have two returns for touchdowns in the same game. Harmon did it in 1940.
Now, though, either Herron is re-injured or has slid too far down the depth chart to make a contribution.
Other notable players who did not make the trip to Northwestern include sophomore safety Marvin Robinson, freshman tailback Justice Hayes, junior tailback Michael Cox and sophomore kicker Seth Broekhuizen.
Hayes is a true freshman who likely will redshirt. He has yet to play this year, and recently did not dress for a home game due to injury.
Broekhuizen was the primary field-goal kicker last year. He went 4-of-14 and has yet to play this year.
