Michigan to open Big House for student watch party during opener against Alabama

By Kyle Meinke

Can't get to Texas to watch the Michigan football team's opener against Alabama? No problem -- if you're a student.

The Wolverines plan to host a watch party at Michigan Stadium for students who wish to watch the Sept. 1 game there. Gates open at 6 p.m., and kickoff is at 8 p.m.

The Center for Campus Involvement posted the following on its website:

"Michigan students are invited to open the football season in the Big House for a Go Blue Pep Rally on the field and to watch the first away game! Experience the Michigan tradition of our stadium, cheer on Maize & Blue, and have fun with multiple activities and free food as the Wolverines tackle the Crimson Tide in Texas. Be sure to bring your MCard for entry. Let's Go Blue!"

Can they pass a law temporarily permitting sale of alcohol?

Hey, I am a parent (AKA the Money Man for UM student) and a HUGE FAN. I will be in Ann Arbor, all the way from California, and you are telling me that I cannot enjoy the game at the Big House?

@RWBill: That is a great idea, but I fear that D Brandon would then put a 3.00 seat license per seat and force you to watch public service announcements to attend field hockey and synchronized diving!! (Sarcasm aside, I think your idea is right on)

That sounds right! Why not open to everyone, charge $5 and donate to the Children's Hospital?

Sounds like a great idea. There will need to be security, how about food vendors? It will be interesting to know more details. I wonder how many Alumni or former letter winners might be upset because they aren't invited. Guess we'll know soon.

As an alum and fan, I have no desire to go. My days of wanting to be in the midst of thousands of those who do not know their limitations are long past. I'll be happy sitting at home, drinking great beer, eating good food and doing whatever else strikes my fancy. Go Blue!

@heartbreak. SEC and Tom Joad...is anyone here missing the point that by that time of night...8 pm, most of the students in this town will be so drunk they 1, won't be able to find the stadium or 2 not remember anything about the game...and SEC...kleenex? I say buckets and cool washcloths...cuz it don't matter whether you win or lose...it's how drunk you can get by kick-off!

@Simon. I apologize if I offended you. I honestly wasn't trying to (on this one). I tend to forget that playing "late" games is not common in AA. In the SEC we do play many games later than noon. Consequently, late(r) games are a bigger deal for um than for most SEC teams. That statement was not meant to detract from or diss um.

Funny!! Sadly, I think you may be right, be it a big night game, before classes begin, and a big holiday party weekend. Even more reason that Brandon is missing an opportunity here. Imagine the amount of munchies he could sell, at 5.00 a bag?? Or he could get blue and yellow striped m/ms and sell them for 15.00 a bag as "limited edition alternative m&ms..."

Students seem to have found the stadium ok last fall vs ND...

I concede your point :-) in the SEC, we play many night games so I wasn't considering how big a deal that is up here.

wow. they're gonna need a lot of Kleenex! (and quite a few counselors too)

Oh, and David, the following is actually listed at the top of the um wiki page: "This article needs additional citations for verification." Means half the stuff you're citing as "evidence" of great um graduates could be pure fiction. Whoever added most of the names didn't provide references to prove it. that's why you can't use it for "research"...

Hey David. I'm sure Wikipedia is an acceptable research "source" at um...but in the SEC we are actually required to use sources not written by the general public (for all I know, you could have edited it). Of course, the founder of Wikipedia is actually a Crimson Tide Alumni...but I digress. you could try this list: it's a bit more complete: http://www.ranker.com/list/notable-university-of-alabama-alumni-and-students/reference not that I'm defending the academics of 'Bama...that wasn't my SEC school. but the SEC does have some good academics also: http://www.olemiss.edu/alumni/notable/index.html http://www.lsu.edu/pa/facts/alumni.shtml http://www.ranker.com/list/notable-auburn-university-alumni-and-students/reference http://www.ranker.com/list/notable-vanderbilt-university-alumni-and-students/reference http://www.ranker.com/list/notable-university-of-georgia-alumni-and-students/reference

Hey SEC fan---Have you seen the list of "prominent" University of Alabama people? I've provided a link below. The most famous non-athlete is Ponzi-schemer Bernie Madoff!! The University of Alabama has not produced hardly a single famous alum outside of this scoundrel. SEC proud. All athletics, no academics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_University_of_Alabama_people

@Ghost...hmmmm...considering the recent um record I wouldn't be throwing stones if I were you. Newspaper headline should have read: "Brady Hoke - Returns to his criminal justice days - Now Head Coach of um Wolvies"
