Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner will wait a while to hear about medical redshirt
Lon Horwedel | AnnArbor.com
Sidelined by a back injury for the second half of the 2010 football season, Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner applied for a medical redshirt year.
It might be a while before he receives an answer.
“That’s so far out there,” Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Tuesday.
No decision on a fifth year will be made by the NCAA until Gardner completes his fourth year of eligibility. In the interim, Michigan will document his ongoing case with the Big Ten.
For now, Gardner officially heads into the fall as a sophomore.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Inkster native played in three games last season, most notably completing 7 of 10 passes against Bowling Green, before a nagging back injury prevented him from playing after Sept. 25.
Now he’s focused on learning Hoke’s pro-style offense. After watching film throughout the past few months, he’ll get his first on-field opportunity to view the offense Saturday, when the Wolverines kick off spring football practices.
Hoke likes what he’s seen so far from both Gardner and starter Denard Robinson.
“They both have done a really good job of taking time to know the offense, the different - what’s the right word? - the intricacies of it,” Hoke said.

Okay, it's about time Michigan fans stop digging for salvation, and stop making excuses. It's never Michigans fault for anything, it's always someone else's. Michigan has had Gardner for 4years and has done zip with him, Everyone put all there faith into Robison, being he was going to win the next Hiesman. What did Michigan do when DR threw how many interceptions, really that many in one game wow...They did nothing. Why did you put (the next quarterback or the future of Michigan) in a recieving roll....Every paper in the country agreed that DR should be the wide out and Gardner the QB, would only make sense if he was the future of Michigan...It's always someone else's fault, what Michigan has done is pretty much ruin Gardners chance for the NFL, while kissing the ground that your (just okay) quarterback walks on. RR did it, Hoak did it, and it will keep happening....Instead of prepping your true future Bellomy, your gonna try and red shirt Gardner...How freaking smart is that, So Bellomy will sit for another year, so at the end of next year you will be right back in this boat, with a quarterback that has no reps in real games. Don't cry about your choices, becasue you made them...suck it up and suffer thru it...it's no RR's fault, It's not Hoaks fault, It's the Michigan train of thought....it tends to bite you in the A** and then you cry about it....

BluTp, I realize that you were a great Rich Rodriguez fan but son, you've got to get over the fact he's no longer the coach at Mich. Sometimes it's easier to let go and not attack other posters just to get a historical point across. Just get over it and post your feeling of disappointment that your favorite all time coach Rich Rodriguez is gone. Son, I think Brady Hoke will do a good job, why don't you give our new coach a chance, I promise you Brady will try real hard. Try not attacking posters it won't help your sorrow of your coach RR being gone.

Some of us were loyal fans to the team and coach, something some of you could take a class in, naw forget it, I doubt it would do any good.

As with ecmichman, you hit the nail on the head. By the way, I don't think Hoke will need any excuses because he will actually do the job he was hired to do.

All of you RR apologists need to understand that this is a new start with Brady. Those of us that supported the coaching change (out with RR) and now support coach Hoke and his staff will not steal a page out of your "Blame Lloyd" playbook. RR is gone and his lagacy will soon be buried and forgotten in a smoldering heap of irrelevance.

Ya, some of you complainers will blame RR for the games Brady loses, bad weather, mistakes made during games, the price of tickets and hot dogs and heck let's blame RR for the gas hikes and food hikes while we're at it. Geez, get over it RR is gone. Everything is on Brady now win or lose. Comprende?

Comprende. Now explain that to the former coaches 'fan(atic)s' who continue to blame all of his woes on Lloyd Carr. Same rules apply, the only difference is none of the excuses will come from the coach this time.

I don't understand the rational for the rule that makes you wait until after your regular four years of eligibility to find out if you'll be granted the medical red shirt. The decision will be based on events in the 2010 season. As such there is no reason to delay the decision. Does anyone understand why or is this just another piece of nonsense from the NCAA?

Yet another RR screwup: Gardner should never have played last year. RR's attempt to make a point with Forcier was as effective as everything else he tried to do. I am so very glad he's gone. And I hope Gardner gets his year back.

At the time it was easy to see why he was playing. The back up was about to leave the team and couldn't be trusted. I wish he did not have to, but I don't think was so bone headed. I would say unfortunate is a better word, or better yet, a series of unfortunate events.

A medical redshirt? Let's see the kid practiced everyday and made every road trip. If he was not ready to play why was he taken on the trips. Remember Threat did not make the OSU trip and RRod explained why as he said he cannot play why take him.

1st, I agree, the decision to play DG was shortsighted and spiteful on the WCiMFH's part. He wanted to send a message to TF and didn't think it through. Well, if that's the last of his boneheaded mistakes we have to worry about, I grateful. Go Blue! TiM

Another Rich Rod Error...playing Devin in meaningless games and jeopardizing his red shirt. Bonehead move by the coach. Hoke has another one of RRs messes to dig out of with this one. Hope it works out.
