Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson named Silver Football winner
By AnnArbor.com Staff
Michigan sophomore Denard Robinson, who set a record for rushing yards by a quarterback this season with 1,643 is the Chicago Tribune Silver Football winner, the newspaper announced late Thursday.
Robinson narrowly beat out Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the voting. Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan finished third.

Denard needs no defending for this honor. He works hard, plays hard, and is a team player. He earned this award. He broke some long standing records in the B10. He IS the MVP. Hands down. His effort = his numbers. Why do the OSU "fans" keep hitting the Wolverine blogs? Because Pryor is a mediocre QB in their system. Their defense is what holds their team together. I'd take Denard any day over Pryor. Denard is humble. Pryor is not. Good luck to ALL the B10 teams in their Bowls. GO BLUE!

Wolvdoug, I watch Michigan play every week. I was referring to how they rate the Heisman in yesteryear until now. Back then being an extraordinary player was all you needed, now you have to be extraordinary and be on a top 10 team.

Sean...Mich didn't have a losing season....they were 7-5

But how many losing teams had the Heisman Trophy after 1956? I wouldn't guess very many, especially in the last 30 years.

In 1956, Paul Hornung won the Heisman trophy playing for Notre Dame. Their record that year? Two wins and eight losses. So, yes, talent is recognizable, even on bad or mediocre teams.

Congrats to Denard. Rensational...not sure I understand the Pryor comments, but I'm sure he's not crying about the bowl game OSU is in or the third straight B10 title he helped win...

The Fact that Michigan has had the last 2 silver football winners....and the team went 4-12 in conference play during those two seasons (thanks Rich Rod loser)... is all the more reason to fire Rich Rod. Without those 2 Silver Football winners, we have had only 2 BT wins! What a joke Rod is.

@Dschan: I see all your guys points about why DR should be the MVP. But let's look at his overall record. He had mediocre games against Wisconsin, Iowa, MSU, OSU, and Purdue. He was OK at times against PSU. He was great at times in those games (as was Roundtree, or Kovacs), but not dominant and not any more valuable to getting his team to fare well than a host of other players. When he left games, the team did not fall apart. Now, what would M's record have been without him? Hard to say, but probably add a few more losses. Now, look at what OSU's record would be without Pryor. Probably 5-6 losses. He went out during the Illinois game, and OSU was a completely different team. Even the King, RR, said he expects his QB backups to play at the same level and expects 2-3 QBs to be "co-starters" in terms of quality. The NW QB got injured, and NW went out and lost, while he willed them to victory over a few teams that he probably should have lost to. He even had near wins against PSU and MSU, things that DR could not muster. So, again, congrats to DR, but I hardly consider 3 votes out of the 11 coaches a big victory. It is a split decision. Let's hope that whoever is coach, DR continues to elevate his game and prove that he really is the MVP.

The BEST PLAYER can be on a losing team; look at Gayle Sayers and Dick Butkis on the Chicago Bears!

heartbreak - the have a different award for the team that does the best. its called the big ten championship. this award is MVP and the P stands for "player". yes his team did fall short in the wins department, him included, but he shouldnt be penalized as a player for that.

Based on some of the comments on this board, the Trent Dilfers of the world are vastly superior to the Dan Marinos. Go figure.

Well, southern: You can have that attitude, but my guess is that JT, Dantonio, Beilema, Ferentz all loved seeing DR because they neutralized him and won pretty handily. It goes to the question, though: What should an MVP be? Who deserves it? Is it just for stats? For wins? I'd argue that Northwestern's QB was a lot more valuable to his team than DR. Remember, even though DR had tremendous stats, Tate came in and produced enough in the Illinois game, that Michigan did not 'need DR' to win. (or else we would have been 2-6 and barely in a bowl). Did DR do enough to clobber Purdue? Just barely. How about the losses? Again, I'll say I think he is the unquestioned MVP of Michigan, but for the B10, I'd take others. That's my opinion, even though I am not a coach.

Felix Hernandez won the Cy Young award when he only won 12 games this year. His statisics dwarfed the compitition except in the win total. He beat out pitchers who won 20 games. It was unfortunate for him that his team had no offense to speak of. Ironically, King Felix may have paved the way for players like Denard. Denard was outstanding this year and is certainly deserving of the award eventhough his team only won 7 games. I have no problem if you believe that the league MVP should be on the best team or one of the best teams. That is certainly understandable and you are entitled to your opinion. I just respectfully disagree.

Can anyone name another player in the Big Ten that was talked about more than DR this year? I doubt it!

Didn't the Big Ten coaches vote on this award? Never mind that after facing DR, in their opinion, he was the MVP; apparently, the people on this board have a better understanding of the meaning of "MVP" than the Big Ten coaches whose teams played against him.

No one is arguing that DR's accomplishments are not amazing statistically. But were they worthy of him getting the B10 overall MVP? Not to me. I want my MVP to get the team to the championship, or at least close. He was the MVP of Michigan, but the whole B10? This is not a slam against DR or RR. It is simply, what does the MVP mean? Is it for stats only, or is it for getting your team to the top?

@ The OSU: Get over it. Your defense is more noteworthy than your quarterback.

Congrats to Denard. He is an amazing athlete and should only get better as an upperclassman. He is the kind of player that is better suited to the RR style of offense but would produce under any system. Just look at Dennis Franklin, Rick Leach, Jim Harbaugh, and Demetrius Brown as examples of good running QBs who were also serviceable passers under more traditional offenses.

Have to agree with "The Fan". Here is a kid that came to UM and asked for no favors. Just worked his butt off to do the best he could for the university. He did the best he could as a sophomore, first year starter. Is it too much to say congratulations for a job well done. The others that he was competing against were upperclassmen with multiple years of starting.

@the fan: How is it negative to question who should get the MVP? Do you always agree with NFL MVP? Have you ever seen a Heisman given to a player on a team with a losing record? Valuable to me equals elevating the play of the team, without which you have a losing record. Well, Michigan had a losing record in the B10.

The OSU Put D Rob with OSU's supporting cast and your undefeated and DRob holds the Heisman. Hard to get a bunch of wins with underclassmen everywhere.

Congrats to DR, but I really don't think he is the most valuable player in B10. Despite his gaudy number, I don't see how the MVP can be given with only 3 wins. I would have gone with somebody like Cousins, or Tolzien (or one of the running backs for Wisconsin).

@paperstreet, I was referring more to the fact that RR was able to discover this kid and develop him into one of the most dynamic QB's in the country...as a sophomore. There's no denying that he had a good sense of what this unknown prospect was capable of when other coaches overlooked him.

Regardless of what happens in our coaching position, I'd hate to see Denard (or Tate or Devin, for that matter) transfer somewhere else. We've got good potential there, and I like what I'm seeing with it.
