Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges mentioned in an early coaching carousel turn

By Nick Baumgardner

The annual college football coaching carousel began to turn a bit early this season when New Mexico fired coach Mike Locksley on Sunday.

One of the early names speculated as Locksley's replacement? Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges.

Yahoo! Sports national college football writer Tom Dienhart said on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that the first-year Michigan assistant has been brought up in conversation for the opening: "Some early names I hear for New Mexico: Bob Bostad; Sonny Dykes; Mike Leach; Noel Mazzone; Jim McElwain, Ed Warinner; Al Borges."

New Mexico has named defensive coordinator George Barlow its interim head coach heading into a game against New Mexico State.

Borges has previous assistant coaching stops at California (1982 and 2001), Diablo Valley (Calif.) College (1983-85); Portland State (1986-92), Boise State (1993-94), Oregon (1995), UCLA (1996-2000), Indiana (2002-03), Auburn (2004-07) and San Diego State (2009-10).

NMSU is a place coaches go to die. Borges would be better off in the long run staying put. Good pay at a fraction of the stress and aggravation of a head coach. Look at Minnesota's coach (kill?), Dantonio's heart attack last year (I think that is effecting his coaching this year- heart attacks cause depression), Urban Meyers health problems. When was the last time you saw Hoke smile? Also, as regards Hoke and health problems; he seriously needs to loose some weight in the off season. He's a heart attack waiting to happen. Definitely no bbq sauce on his crow. Seriously.

We need Coach Borges to stay put! We cannot bring in another O coordinator and start Denard all over again in styles/schemes when he is trying to adapt (passing wise anyways) to more of a West Coast Style Offense. Denard needs to throw better during Big10 play. Peroid! And while I do believe he will get better as the Big10 games progress, I would really like to see Devin get some playing time in with Denard as a back or receiver. Could you imagine with Devin's arm and Denard's speed how much more explosive we would be? Let alone a back (in Denard) who can be a threat of a runner/passer too? GO BLUE!!!

Stop already with the "Denard at another position" crap. He's the QB. Leave him alone.

I agree with Tru2Blu76 - I don't want to see Coach Borges leave U-M, but I believe Brady Hoke can do a very good job finding a replacement if that does happen.

Nine previous coaching jobs: ominous. Sure hope Coach Borges really likes his job with Brady Hoke at Michigan. So far, he appears to be a truly effective offensive coordinator here. OTH: Brady Hoke has proven his ability to hire top-level coaches and knows who to keep and who to let go. Hoke's proven abilities in all areas of the Michigan Program over the few months since his arrival are greatly assuring to this fan. Go Blue!
