Michigan consolidates look of its Block M logo

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The University of Michigan is using a more consistent Block M look.

There have been multiple variations of the iconic college logo in use over the past few years. Under new athletic director Dave Brandon, the athletic department is consolidating its brand and mainly using the all-maize Block M, according to Greg Dooley at mvictors.com, who first detailed the changes Monday.

An IMG spokesperson told Dooley the consolidation took place when Dave Brandon started as U-M athletic director in March. Here's a link to the full report at mvictors.com, complete with a shot of the all-maize Block M.

This story has been updated to reflect the fact the university has used an all-maize Block M in the past, and notes that Dooley has updated his original post to include new information from U-M spokesperson Bruce Madej.

Doesn't the use of fat block letters implicitly promote obesity? Shouldn't our University be striving for a more lean public image? Minnesota's lettering looks much healthier by comparison.

Thankfully, now looks less like Morrison's the UK food chain. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c2/MorrisonsConsett.jpg I think they changed their logo to a green "block M".

I prefer the older one (and it stands out better). Maybe we're just hoping to blend in now. I hope not.

I was sure MSU was going to go into Ann Arbor on Oct. 9 and get the victory, but now with this logo change, who knows? Maybe it will end Michigan's stretch of complete irrelevance. Yay! Go Yellow!!

Are we sure that this is an official athletic dept logo change? the University proper and the athletic dept have different logo standards. If you look at the logo just put in the center of the new turf at the stadium weeks ago, the "M" has a blue border. Subtle, but blue.

Nice change. Now if we can just get rid of those ugly hats and go back to the Bo style baseball cap.

I like the change.. very minor change but enough improve it. Sort of like the Lions logo- I love their new logo.. always hated the previous Lions logo. I really never liked that other Block M with Michigan written over it. This new one will do just fine.
