Jordan Kovacs, Taylor Lewan start Saturday, Ricky Barnum not with team
While junior safety Jordan Kovacs did dress and start Saturday against Iowa, the Michigan football team still is beset by injury.
The Wolverines' junior safety did not play last week against Purdue due to a left knee injury. He practiced this week, though, and was in the lineup against the Hawkeyes. He wore a blue pad on his left knee.
However, junior left guard Ricky Barnum, who is dealing with injuries to both ankles, did not make the trip to Iowa City. Sophomore Michael Schofield has been Barnum's primary backup. Elliott Mealer is the only other reserve with experience.
The other backup offensive lineman who traveled were Jack Miller, Rocko Khoury and Joey Burzynski.
Left tackle Taylor Lewan (leg, wrist) also is dealing with injury, but started for Michigan.
Other notable lineup notes:
Reserve safety Marvin Robinson, battling an undisclosed injury, did not make the trip.
Reserve linebackers Brandon Herron and Cam Gordon did make the trip. Herron, a star in the season-opening win against Western Michigan, has been quiet since and did not dress for previous trips to Northwestern and Michigan State. Gordon has not yet played on defense this year because of a back injury and the emergence of Jake Ryan.
