Michigan football recruit Greg Brown looks forward to living up to Fremont legacy

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Michigan football team's 2011 recruiting class is complete, but the ceremonies continue.

On Friday, Greg Brown returned to Fremont (Ohio) Ross High School for a weather-delayed signing day ritual. Brown was the first player to verbally commit to then-coach Rich Rodriguez and was already enrolled at Michigan when Brady Hoke became the new head coach.

The Fremont News-Messenger has a feature story on Brown, who follows former Ross players Charles Woodson, Rob Lytle and Tony Gant to Michigan.

"The next Michigan shirt I'd like to see around here is one with Brown and the number on it," said Ross athletic director Art Bucci. "It'd be nice to continue the Fremont legacy up there."

1st down. ........Yes it is good, to see that Rich Rodriguez recruited, the Fremont Ross HS product, Greg Brown to UM! I also appreciate that Coach Hoke was shrewd enough to hang onto this kid! I think he's a great fit. Now, with the recruit from Toledo St John's, (Miller), who also played his junior year at Lakewood St. Ed's, I believe, and Cleveland Glenville product, Frank Clark, Hoke has re-established that northern Ohio pipeline. Add that, to Toledo Whitmer's Koger, Wauseon' Mealer, and Oregon Clay's Jordon Kovachs, also Rodriguez pickups, and Michigan can boast a strong foundation here. Other fans can detail similar inroads, in Columbus (central) Ohio, and Cincinnati & Dayton (SW) Ohio. Perhaps, eventually, the Wolverines may even pick up some kids from the Akron/Canton/ Massilon area.(SE Ohio). Greg Brown, being from Fremont Ross, is particlualry exciting for me, as Fremont Ross, was a member of the 'old' Buckeye Conference! Frmt Ross, Elyria Sr, Lorain Admiral King, Lorain Sr, Mansfield Sr, Marion Harding, Findlay Sr, and Sandusky Sr. Lots of great memories! I'm sure Tressel will not be pleased...and nothing could make me happier. Go Blue...'beat the Buckeyes'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its nice to see that Fremont pipeline opened up again. Maybe Charles can get in touch with Greg and welcome him to UM, after the Super Bowl of course, if he hasnt done that already.

This is exactly the type of student/athlete UM needs to rebuild it's winning traditions both on and off the field. This young man grew up wanting to be a Wolverine, regardless of who the coach was. He wants to follow in the footsteps of Lytle, Gant, and Woodson who went to his high school. It warms my heart on a cold winter day (yes, even in Phx it's cold). Go Blue!

Nice, kids. First game I remember is the 10-10 tie to (unable to type it) in, what, 1973? Franklin broke his collarbone, Lantry missed the two fgs. I'm sure you boys remember that. Anyway, next time you get a chance to see it on ESPN Classic or something like that, watch the 1974 12-10 "loss" to (unable to type it). Lantry's fg attempt at the end of that game was FRIKKIN' GOOD!!! The refs (rightly so) probably figured they'd get their throats slit if they called it any other way. Nice talkin' to you boys.

Hey Don, I hear ya. I actually like a little chill in the air every now and then. The winters here are far easier to deal with than the summers!

Cold in Tucson by Tucson standards, but acceptable for a Michigan boy like me. :-) @PortagLkBlue -- "That burst of speed and power when he hit that line and TD'd was aweinspiring." Yes, agree ... and there's a long history of those kinds of backs at Michigan. When he was healthy Brandon Minor could run like that. And never forget Gordy Bell ... deceptively tough.

Not in Calif., it's a beautiful sun shinny day, nice temperature heck, I might load up my German Shepherds and go fishing. If that kid can compare with Charles and my favorite all time back Rob Lytle I will be most happy. In 1975 I was sitting near the goal line and watched Rob Lytle burst through the defensive line of Northwestern for a TD. That burst of speed and power when he hit that line and TD'd was aweinspiring.
