Michigan football QB commit Shane Morris impressive again at national 7-on-7 tournament

By Nick Baumgardner

Shane Morris wasn't able to lead his squad to a repeat championship this weekend.

But overall, the future Michigan football quarterback finished with another impressive showing at the IMG/Madden Football National Championships 7-on-7 tournament in Bradenton, Fla.

Morris, a 2013 Michigan commit, led the Detroit-based "Maximum Exposure Blue" team to the championship game for a second straight season, only this year, his club lost to Florida's "Team Tampa" in the final.

Even so, Morris still stood out as one of the better overall prospects at the event -- and was named the top overall quarterback (No. 3 overall player) by recruiting service 247sports.com.

"The nation’s No. 2 pro-style signal-caller and No. 22 prospect overall got off to a slow start, but when tournament play began, Morris quickly heated up," the site wrote. "The velocity and touch was there for the future Michigan Wolverine, as the 6-foot-3, 201-pound Morris fit the football in several tight windows.

"Morris hit several big plays downfield, and other than a couple of tough throws against a swarming Team Tampa squad, he was close to perfect on the tournament’s second day."

The 6-foot-3 Morris is rated as the second-best pro-style quarterback in America for 2013 by both Rivals.com and 247sports.com. Both sites also list the four-star signal caller as the 22nd overall prospect nationally -- making him the highest-rated recruit in Michigan's No. 1 overall class for 2013.

According to 247sports.com, Morris teamed up at the IMG camp this weekend with fellow 2013 Michigan commits Cstont'e York and Khalid Hill.

York is a three-star receiver from Chandler Park Academy, while Hill is a three-star tight end from Detroit Crockett.

RE: "The 6-foot-3 Morris is rated as the second-best pro-style quarterback in America for 2013" --- beware of "expert opinions. Lets just hope that, 2 years from now, Michigan doesn't find itself competing IN a Div1 loaded with spread offenses. "Everything old is new again" -- I sure as heck don't want to see Michigan stymied (again) by a mobile offenses while touting their "pro set" offense. Re-living the Lloyd Carr Era isn't on my Favorite Priorities List.

Would love to see a tandem of Shane Morris and Laquon Treadwell wearing the winged helmet!

Treadwell better get around to decide, because the class will be filled by the start of the season.

It might be interesting to include that Team Tampa lost to Max Ex last year in the inaugural final. Team Tampa's standouts last year and this year were none other than WR Alvin Bailey and DB Leon McQuay III, two if Michigan's remaining recruiting targets. They have considered playing together and both have Michigan on their final lists.

Observer, if everyone looks good in shorts and helmets, why don't you go out there and put your money where your mouth is? I'm not asking you to jump on the Shane Morris bandwagon but at least show some respect. Shane is dedicating his whole life to being the best quarterback he can be and he is excelling at it. I see nothing wrong with encouraging people like Shane to cultivate their talents... and all you do is criticize them for it.

Shane is not only one of our best recruits but, he's one of our best recruiters!

That would be fantastic, sure doesn't hurt having a recruit like Shane looking so good out there. You can bet he's talking to them. Go Blue !

excuse me but won't he be judged on his ability in 11on 11 situations and not this gimmick stuff.

Actually these 7on7s are being credited for the advanced development of quarterbacks entering college especially in the area of decision-making and reading defenses. It's a huge advantage and helps the cream of the crop players separate themselves even more from the lesser fortunates who don't get to compete in them.

Your right- it's all a bunch of doo doo.

7-on-7 isn't gimmick stuff. It's actually proven to be the best way to judge skill positions without risking injury during the off season. Everyone doesn't look good when they aren't in pads. For instance, you and I would look like complete garbage if we were to attempt to play in this 7-on-7... have some respect for people who actually cultivate their talents.

15crown00 - Yes, he will be judged on his 11 on 11 situations. Every athlete is judged all the time based on how they play and the situation in which they are playing in. It's called competition, training, and making yourself better. Robert Granville - You hit the nail right on the head.

Shane is way past being 'judged'...that's for players needing to prove themselves, NOT Shane's problem.....

You do realize it's the offseason right? Search the web and you'll find that most NFL QBs and WRs participated in camps like these every summer. There can be no rest if you want to be great. Also consider that two of Michigan's remaining top recruiting targets were present... Alvin Bailey and Leon McQuay III. And as always, if you don't like the coverage you can abstain from reading.
