Michigan football commit Mike McCray, son of former Ohio State captain, receives offer from Buckeyes

By Kyle Meinke

Mike McCray is the Michigan football team's second-highest rated recruit for 2013, according to Rivals. He's the No. 2 linebacker in the state of Ohio, according to Scout.

And now, the Buckeyes are coming after him.

McCray, who committed to the Wolverines on March 6, has been offered by Ohio State, according to a tweet from Tony Gerdeman of fan site The-Ozone.net. The offer has since been confirmed by other outlets.

An interesting wrinkle in the situation is McCray's father, Mike McCray Sr., was a captain for the Buckeyes in the 1980s.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has already flipped several notable Big Ten recruits, including Michigan State's top 2012 recruit, Se'Von Pittman, and Wisconsin offensive lineman Kyle Dodson.

Michigan has yet to lose a committed player to Meyer.

Could McCray be the first?

Scout's Bill Greene, who covers Ohio recruiting and is close to McCray, said he would be "shocked if Michael did anything but say thanks, but no thanks."

"The hardest thing to do is to predict what these teenagers are going to do, but personally, I think he's solid to Michigan," Greene added. "Now, he could commit to Ohio State by 3 o'clock and I'll end up looking like an idiot, but I'd be really surprised if he decommits."

Greene said when McCray decided to commit to Michigan, he called Ohio State to inform them of his decision. The Buckeyes asked him to wait because they hadn't finished determining whether to offer him, but he proceeded with the commitment anyway.

"He said, 'No, I found the right school for me,' and that tells me he's solid to Michigan," Greene said. "He would have waited if he was serious about Ohio State.

"Again, I haven't talked to him yet about all of this, but I'd just be really surprised if this had any kind of affect on his commitment."

BLUE MARKER. In 20yrs UofM fans will still be talking about JT. Do you really think that in the last 20yrs any college football team has been clean? If you do get your head out of the sand! I 'm sure Woody and Bo along with Lloyd and Earl all played kids that were ineligible. They just didn't get caught. The reason OSU fans don't except the forfeits is that the infractions did not involve 100s of thousands of dollars. Why did the NCAA allow our our kids to play in the Sugar Bowl than take away the win? The answer is money. All the TV sponsors would have been upset if the best players were not on the field! YET OUR KIDS ARE PUNISHED FOR MAKING A FEW THOUSAND BUCKS! JT took one for the team because in a few years the NCAA couldn't do anything about the infractions anyway! My point is this. Nobody is clean and a large number of the NCAA rules are idiotic. The only way to prove that one team is better than the other is on the field. I'm looking forward to seeing your team in Columbus! And thank you so much for the spell check.

How quickly UM fansl forget the 100s of thousands of dollars given to the FAB FIVE.At OSU we are talking about tatoos and a few thousand dollars. If you want to see the biggest embarrassment of the big ten the team up north should looking the mirror!

The Bucks fans still don't get it! It wasn't the tattoos (spelled correctly by the way) or the free cars or the jobs without showing up. No, the big one was when your "legendary" coach lied to the NCAA and played players he knew to be ineligible. You know, the coach that wrote books on "doing things the right way"! Yet another OSU coach disgraced (the program should be used to it; it's the only way a coach leaves that job)! I love that you have to go back 20 years to talk smack about Michigan. Here's the difference.....Michigan admits theses mistakes and accepted their punishment. You won't hear any UM fans bragging about Final Fours. But OSU fan still can't figure out what was so bad and still brag about the '11 win over Michigan and the Sugar Bowl win. Then go out and hire the dirtiest coach available to replace your disgraced coach. Ah, the OSU way….win at all costs!

Joe Depree

Sun, May 27, 2012 : 8:17 p.m.

Just to be clear as their seems to be a constent misunderstanding maybe due to the fact that UM fans are not very knowledgeable however.....OHIO is the team that trounced UM in the NCAA tourney this year, Ohio State university is the team that has dominated the big ten this century and is 10 - 2 over that time frame. Just want to be clear. It's funny that Hoke had to come up with reference to match the great tag of "the team up north" and the best he could do was mis identify a team ! My guess is he couldn't choose be tween his other clever thought of calling OSU the team down south ! hope his offense is more clever than his "creative" nicknames. Don't the UM fans realize how absolutely corny that is, cmon UM is full of very smart graduates, think folks. I can come up with at least 3 that play off of OSU much better than purposely mistaking OHIO for Ohio State. So lets hear you best maybe you can be the one that changes that poorly chosen shot of Ohio which is the state where UM gets the best players year in and year out on the team

Joe says OSU is 10-2 over the last twelve games. Let's just skip over the fact that one of those wins was vacated for cheating! I'll bet Joe boosts about the Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas too! Hey Joe, what bowl are you guys going to this year? Joe, your program is classless! Both OSU legendary coaches fired in disgrace! OSU will never be what Michigan is and that's what drives the Buckeye's "nuts"! Go Blue!

Didn't think this story would get so much fan reaction. Couple of things: U Meyer has done this to Kyle Kalis and probaly a few others where he comes in the back door with offers after said player(s) already committed to Michigan. The other thing is to trust the commits like Shane Morris to reassure Mike Mc Cray. Shane has been awesome in helping Michigan get recruits. I will keep the faith in the 2013 recruiting class who are deeply committed to Michigan to help keep Mike Mc Cray in the fold....GO BLUE!!

Seems strange to me that this kid called a school that had not even offered him, to let them know he was committing to another school. That tells me he would have gone to o$u had they offered. Now they have, so we will see what kind of character he has. If he sticks with the team that wanted him from the start, vs. Flipping to his favorite school once they come calling, then he has good character, and should be considered a true Michigan Man! If not, it will be the loss of a talented football player, but not the loss of a good character guy. I can live with that, especially considering the depth we have at his position.

Ohio State recently reported a raft of additional violations to the NCAA, in addition to the 46 that are already a matter of public record. The athletic department has no integrity and will continue to try to win at all costs. Urban Meyer won at Florida with Ron Zook's players. As it became evident that the program was unraveling under his watch, he resigned - twice, before the accountability was obvious. The Buckeyes are an embarrassment to the State of Ohio and one of the least respected programs in the country. To the Michigan faithful, please don't waste any energy on an inferior, tainted program. Be proud of the Maize and Blue for what the university and it's athletic program represents. This kid from Ohio has already reached that conclusion. Go Blue, always.

Terry Star21

Sat, May 26, 2012 : 3:18 a.m.

LB...I have been reading some of that and there may even be more violations that have not come to light, from what is being reported. I will reserve judgement until everything unfolds and has been thoroughly investigated. It is sad, and not a good time to be an ohio fan......stay tuned !

OHIO is the Darth Vader of college football (although USC apears to be the west coast version). Urban Meyer fits in well with the other two stooges E Gordon Gee and Gene Smith. None of those 3 guys has the proper attitude toward doing the right thing. So they now want to steal from Michigan like they took from Penn State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin. Brady Hoke and his staff should consider going after the Ohio commitments now that the weasels are attacking the chicken coop. Every year I find more reasons to despise them Bucks. They seem to lack refinement in a major big way!

this is really long but here's the article about oscar myer. it's a must read Urban Blight Urban Meyer has gone far beyond bold and innovative on the recruiting trail. He's unethical, he's immoral and he's a cheater. To summarize, Meyer landed a top JUCO wide receiver this season by doggedly recruiting the player's girlfriend, a gymnast, to come to UF. This is a blatant violation of a basic NCAA rule forbidding football coaches from recruiting for other sports and also an infraction regarding frequency of contact. He further would orchestrate a call between that player and Tim Tebow at the Heisman Trophy ceremony which is also a clear violation of NCAA rules. He lied to a Michigan recruit about a conversation he had with UM coaches attempting to trick the player into believing the Michigan coaches felt the player would be better off at Florida. The conversation never took place; a clear ethical and moral breech. Finally, Meyer told a top QB recruit (Jevan Snead, formerly at Texas, now at Ole Miss) two years ago that his only interest in scouting Tim Tebow was as a linebacker after promising the player he was the only quarterback the Gators were recruiting. Another blatant lie. Another dramatic ethical and moral breech. But worse still, the gross act of a grown man trying to screw with a teenager's future, the ultimate act of deceit, brokering on built up trust to deceive a kid for your personal gain. These are not the acts of a man with integrity. This is cheating. There's no other way to view it. Meyer has gone well beyond just bending the rules, he's taken a bamboo pole, jammed it up the backside of the rules, broken it off, taken the remainder and plunged it in the rules' eye, kicked the rules in the groin and then spit on them as he walks away. He has what appears to be a pathological aversion to sportsmanship when it comes to recruiting.

The underlying reason Meyer inspires hatred among some fans is very simple. It's because they know he wins. Wins big. And that's scary. Meyer has a 104-23 record as a college head coach. That is an incredible 82%. He's won two national titles, guided Utah to an undefeated season and claimed two other BCS bowl victories. Anyone who doubts that the marriage between Meyer and Ohio State, with all its resources and access to elite Division I talent, isn't going to produce wildly successful results is fooling themselves. Yes, he will lose some very talented players, both from Ohio and beyond its borders. So..??? It's as simple as that. UofM fans will have to earn bragging rights. So far, the 21st century has not been kind to your won/loss ledger in The Game. You think The Vest owned you, all I can say is good luck against this coach.

This is standard operating procedure for Meyer. He knows he probably can't flip him, but if nothing else he wants it to look to the Ohio fanbase that he's trying to keep the state's best players in-state. Their fans hate it when good players in Ohio commit to and attend Michigan. But this doesn't hide the fact Urban was late to the party and missed out, even if McCray had any interest before in going to TSIO. And like Gee Whiz stated, this could also be an act of desperation by Ohio because a lot of the other guys they targeted aren't coming there. Whatever.
