Michigan football coach Brady Hoke shrugs off Ohio State's criticism of 'grenade' celebration
After a win over Ohio State, Michigan players' celebration included hugs from cheerleaders, handshakes from fans and a "grenade drop" that the Buckeyes weren't too happy about.

Then, it celebrated with a "grenade" routine at midfield, in which quarterback Denard Robinson threw the football in the air like a grenade. When it hit the ground, players dropped to the turf in unison.
The route was cathartic for the No. 17 Wolverines (10-2, 6-2), who won 40-34 to end the run of futility against the rival Buckeyes.
Those Buckeyes weren't as good-natured about it, though.
"I lost so much respect for Michigan after they won n threw the ball in the air acting like it was a grenade," tweeted Buckeyes fullback Zach Boren. "To take it to that level of disrespect is just so uncalled for. Act like you have won before."
Boren is the younger brother of former Ohio State offensive lineman Justin Boren, who transferred from Michigan to the Buckeyes following Lloyd Carr's retirement after the 2007 season and was critical of the Rich Rodriguez regime.
Of course, no current Michigan player had beaten Ohio State before. Seniors were 0-3 and had been outscored 100-24 in the rivalry.
Added Ohio State tight end Jeff Heuerman: "Karma is gonna be a (expletive) for that little 'celebration' at the end."
Players said the controversial celebration -- you can catch a piece of it at the 34-minute mark of this YouTube video -- is something they have done after each Friday practice this year. Coach Brady Hoke said he was fine with his team celebrating their win that way.
"I don’t have any problem (with it) because it wasn’t disrespectful to anybody," Hoke said. "It’s something they do every Friday.
"No. It wasn’t disrespectful to anybody. It’s something those kids have done for 12 weeks.”
Ohio State, though, clearly was offended with the episode, which occurred in front of several players at midfield.
It led to Ohio State cornerback Brad Roby tweeting: "I will never lose to those scrubs again."

Brennen Beyer
Brennen Beyer is expected to participate in bowl practices. The team won't work out as a team this week, but the freshman linebacker could be back with the team when it reconvenes next week. He did not play against Ohio State, and Hoke had said he was unsure if he would be back this year.
Brendan Gibbons
Hoke was effusive in his support of kicker Brendan Gibbons, who hit a 43-yard field goal to give Michigan a six-point lead with 1:59 remaining against Ohio State.
After going 1-of-5 last year, Gibbons finished 10-of-14 this year. He credited the confidence and positivity of the coaching staff as a factor in his turnaround.
Hoke offered more of it Monday.
"Huge," he said of the 43-yard kick. "Huge. I mean, Gibbons in that kick, you know, because there were some people that really doubted him at the beginning of the year -- maybe some in this room -- maybe. Didn’t say. But he did a tremendous job all year, and he’s grown and he’s learned and he’s got a good demeanor about him. He’s worked hard.”

A couple other topics broached by Hoke during his 33-minute session with the media:
On whether offensive coordinator Al Borges will be interested in any head coaching vacancies: “I don’t know. I don’t know. If he does, good. If he’s interested, I mean, that’s all right.”
On what he told Ohio State coach Luke Fickell after the game: “I just thought he did a heck of a job, all year. Tough situation.”
On sophomore tailback Fitz Toussaint’s apparent fourth-quarter touchdown that was overturned on a replay: “Do I agree exactly with the call? The rule states there’s got to be some sort of evidence to overturn it?” Then, instead of finishing his thought, he smiled.

osuBetterthanwho, As a visiting fan at a game at osu I was physically threatened, pushed and shoved in the stands, and constantly (not just "off and on") called names that would not be allowed on this board. I've been in some tough spots and came out standing and I've been called worse by people better than the typical osu fan I've had the misfortune to encounter and it didn't ruffle my feathers. I too was in the stands on Saturday and I did not witness any comparable behavior directed an any osu faithful. Before a game in c-bus I witnessed some "classy" osu fans on a street near the stadium run up to an older couple in Michigan attire, block their way, and scream "f* * * y* * blue b*t*h" over and over right in the woman's face. You're right that a little name calling goes with a rivalry like this - but there comes a point when it descends into unacceptable behavior. When attending a game at Notre Dame, I was told by a Notre Dame official your classy osu fans urinated on the church on campus there, among other deeds to make an osu fan proud. He commented that your fans were the worst behaved he had seen up to that time. Your team has planted flags on an opponent's field, torn down banners in opponents' stadiums, a coach of yours struck an opposing player during a game, and on and on and on. While all teams have a few fans who go too far, yours has a significant contingent that not only embarrasses your school but the whole conference. Michigan's celebration pales in comparison. I agree that the sign you mentioned was tacky and shouldn't have implied the offenses were similar - neither is acceptable, both damaged their schools, but they are not equivalent. As you said "A Michigan fan had A sign" and you go an indict all of Ann Arbor and U of M. Typical, miss the serial poor behavior of your osu fans and then indict a whole city and school over one sign.

I was curious about the origin of the "grenade celebration". Here's what I found - - "The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have a (touchdown) celebration whereby players form a circle, toss a football in the air in the middle of the circle and then fall directly backwards in unison when the ball lands on the ground as if a hand grenade has exploded." Sounds pretty innocent to me.

Obviously he took the celebration as a taunt to his team without realizing that this was their practice celebration. The OSU-UM game is so emotional that I can see why he would think it was taunting. I certainly don't think it was bad but now it may have awoken a sleeping giant for next year. Interesting though that you guys think your fans are so much more respectful and better than ours. I was at the game Saturday and got verbally abused on and off the entire day. I don't wine about it as it is part of the rivalry. Talk about respect- a michigan fan had a sign on Saturday that read "Sandusky and Tressel in 2012" . This is disrepectful first of all to the victims that had to endure that and second of all a few tattoos compared to sexual abuse-- doesn't even compare. Way to keep it classy Ann Arbor!!

I don't think that our fans are so much more respectful and better than Ohio but I too have witnessed this type of behavior for the past 7 years. I agree that the sign about Sandusky and Tressel is ridiculous and not fair to the victims but we all know that's not every fan. But this is part of the reason that it's called The Greatest Rivalry in all of sports! Ann Arbor is MUCH better that Columbus though!

I can't believe that Ohio is making such a big deal over this. To insist that Michigan was disrespectful was disrespectful in and of itself. If roles were reversed, one can only imagine what the celebration would have been for them. Who cares what the celebration was!! What did they expect, us showing support for them?!?!? This is the greatest rivalry in sports and when you win against your rivals, you celebrate like you just beat your rivals. Ohio fans need to get over the fact that you're not the same team anymore and accept the fact that you lost to a better Michigan football team. But I guess I do understand wanting to be upset over something like celebration because there isn't anything more important than a win celebration! Hail To The Victors!

It's amazing the degree of response (63 so far) the gernade drop has generated. Let's get real... 1) Traditions are part of college FB and contribute to the fun. Few have the majesty and dignity of dotting the "I" in Script Ohio. I'm not sure of the symbolism of the Michigan team "blowing up." I saw it on TV and no explanation was given. When I heard it was a gernade being dropped, I thought is was weird... albeit harmless. Actually, I took it to be a put-down of Blue. Your team "blows up." 2) In this age of terrorism and our troops facing foes on two fronts, personally, I wonder how the idea of a gernade being dropped was interpretted by our troops. 3) What, if any, is the symbolism of the gernade drop? 4) What was DR's gesture about being spoon-fed supposed to mean? 5) Given the intensity of THE GAME, I expect Buckeye players to be offended by anything Blue did after Saturday. They'll get over that. What the Buckeye Nation won't get over is the score. We're still sore about 1969. Look out next year!!!

The spoon feeding thing was being performed by more players than just DRob. They just had the camera on him more. And it didn't originate at the tohio game either. They were doing it against Nebraska as well. I also saw it in an NFL game this last sunday. Don't know if they copied it from the Michigan team or vice versa. Now that they hired Urban Meyer, OSU fans are already starting to talk smack. We'll beat him too just like in the Capitol One Bowl, when he stood on the sidelines acting smug. I remember his comments in 2006 on how Michigan didn't deserve a rematch in the championship game. Even the great Tebow couldn't save him vs Michigan in the Cap One Bowl. Taboo, You want to hear about respectful fans at Ohio? I went to a game at the Shoe back when Henson was the QB and I was wearing a block M hat. Ohio fans were shouting, RIGHT IN MY FACE, "What does the M stand for? MORON! MORON!" This went on the entire way my friend and I walked to the stadium. It was even worse afterwards when Michigan won. Fans were following us with the same 'classy' taunts, but this time they were stepping in front of us and trying to cut us off, as if trying to start a fight. Luckily we found a large cluster of UM fans before we got mobbed. This season, my cousin went to the game with his daughter. Here are a sampling of the 'classy' taunts those fans gave during the game: "Hoke is a fat @SS!" and "Stab Denard in the neck!" "Tear his F@#$ing head off!" mixed in with every other curse word in the book. Really? Those are not only classless taunts, they are completely ignorant and reflect poorly on the entire OSU fan base. My cousin actually left with his daughter after the first quarter because of the ridiculous language and taunts, even towards his daughter. But of course UM's celebrating amongst themselves for a victory 7 years in the making is the true classless act here. Give me a break.

GoBucks, You're WAY overreacting to a simple celebration that was not in any way aimed at the Buckeyes. It was UM players celebrating amongst themselves and there just happened to be some Ohio players nearby. OSU players and fans are simply frustrated and don't enjoy seeing Michigan celebrate a victory over their/your beloved Bucks. It's been 7 years in the making, these kids were excited and celebrated TOGETHER meaning no disrespect to anyone. If anyone owes an apology, it's Boren and whoever that other unknown player are that AIMED their assaults at Michigan. However, not only does UM not expect an apology, they don't care one bit if they get one. Michigan is too busy basking in the glory of victory.

The Boren brothers - also known as Judas I and Judas II, are not credible authorities on anything that involves the University of Michigan. They have at last slithered into their Buckeye hole, now that justice has finally arrived. Urban Meyer will quickly become known as Tressell Jr. - since he has a way about him that will NOT be popular in Ann Arbor. I seriously doubt if any Big 10 teams truly respect the OHIO way of handling sticky situatioins. I am thoroughly disappointed with Gordon Gee and the entire Ohio football program. It stinketh greatly!

For the Ohio State fans and players, deal with it. They are kids, having fun after a victory. Don't tell me Ohio State players haven't done anything disrespectful in the past. How about the time in the 1970's when the Ohio State team ran under the M Go Blue banner. That's just one example. I sense a little anger by the Buckeyes. That's why as Michigan fans and players, we get up for "The Game". It's fun and enjoyable. I believe that the Ohio State players are a little frustrated they lost and their 6-6 season, as I am sure their fans are as well. I'm sure they will be back with Urban Meyer as their new head coach. This will make the rivalry more fun for all players and fans of both teams. We'll see you next year Ohio State at the horseshoe. This rivalry at times goes in cycles. Remember, the 1980's and 1990's when John Cooper went 2-10-1 against Michigan. Ohio St. had their cycle. Doesn't mean there will be a cycle again anytime soon. Just remember the big fact, Michigan has more wins in the series. Ohio St, you have some catching up to do. To give you credit, your 7 wins caught you up, but you're not there yet.

Too funny and I agree with other posters above. These Buckeyes absolutely showed no class when they stopped by The Tarnished Vested One's to hear his pep talk last Friday. Then after the game, some of the buckeyed players showed why they are crybabies with their comments because they lost to UM. Hoke and the UM team will remember that disrespect from them and will use it to their advantage. If the 6-6 season doesn't humble them then B1G should kick them out and replace them with the real Ohio team, the Ohio University Bobcats (9-3). GO BLUE! Caps off to the Wolverines for their successful season.

Justin Boren is known for having showed up at one of Coach Carr's annual charity "Carr Wash" events in an SUV pulling a boat & trailer. When his TEAMMATES finished washing Boren's car, Boren drove off with leaving any donation. That kind of arrogance and coldness was his trademark at Michigan and the real reason for his running off. That's the "class" of the Boren brothers. So it figures his self-aggrandizing little brother is full of accusations over nothing. One bad apple can spoil the barrel and that's what seems to have happened to the current barrel of Buckeyes. With a seasoned crew of seniors led by Denard Robinson and a crop of top recruits and underclassmen, Hoke's Wolverines will be "insulting" Urb's Buckeyes again next year and probably for years to come. If the team hadn't had the temerity to actually celebrate its victory in front of the OSU guys who were "hurting" from the loss, all the future UM-OSU would have been a duck walk. But, now, they're MAD. Guess UM should have silently walked off the field, cowering in the wake of the majestic Buckeyes, daring not to cast a gaze on the team "hurting" from the loss. Given the outrage the "hurting' Buckeyes are feeling, I can only assume that UM should have checked the tape to see the proper way to act after beating OSU. Plenty of tape to look at this year: Miami, MSU, Nebraska, Purdue, Penn State. Too bad UM couldn't kick OSU's butt and celebrate the PROPER way, as these other 5 teams evidently did. Hopefully, Taylor, Denard, Fitz, and the other 13 returning starters will be able to choke back the terror when they find out prime time studs Zac Boren and Brad Roby fired off angry tweets. Lucky for UM those two weren't mad BEFORE Saturday, otherwise they might have actually done something on the field to help OSU win. Priceless.

Hoke's continual disrespectfully reference to The Ohio State University "Ohio"; the spoon feeding antics by Denard; and, the "grenade" stunt, ensures that your team may not win another game against The Buckeyes for some time to come. How come in your last line you didn't capitalize the The in "The Ohio State University?" Sounds like an insult to me! I see the "spoon feeding" as homage to the fact that UM was hungry for a win. Or is everyone supposed to throw in the towel because they are facing The (Almighty) Ohio State University. Maybe we should just throw the game, and get credit for a win when OSU is forced to vacate their wins for violating NCAA rules? Maybe you should tell everyone the proper decorum to use after they defeat OSU, since OSU NEVER celebrates when they win. And hopefully only the final score reflects the "new era" of Hoke football at UM. If the wins continue, UM won't be so hungry for a win, they'll be used to it. The grenade stunt will still be appropriate, if the refs try to hand the game to OSU as they did in this game (see reference to touchdown reversal. Show me the"positive proof" that he was down.) WE don't need to insult The Ohio State University. Its supporters and representatives do a good enough job of that.

Trisha, what a shame and did the security do anything about those clowns? Man, AD Brandon and B1G better do something like screening out the Buckeye fans from entering any of the opponents stadiums. I have seen too many similar antics from the buckeye fans and had defended myself and others once (knocking two to the floor before being separated by an alert cop). Ask any other B1G team around and you will see OSU fans as #1 (worst behaved).

As a visiting fan at a game at osu I was threatened and constantly called names that would not be allowed on this board. I witnessed some "classy" osu fans on a street near the stadium run up to an older couple in Michigan attire, get in there way, and scream "f* * * y* * blue b*t*h" over and over right in the woman's face. I was even told by a Notre Dame official when I was at a game there that your classy osu fans urinated on the church on campus there. Your team has planted flags on an opponents' fields, torn down banners in opponents' stadiums, a coach of yours struck an opposing player during a game, and on and on and on. While all teams have a few fans who go too far, yours has huge contingent that not only embarrass your school but the whole conference. Michigan's celebration pales in comparison.

zach boren never had respect for the wolverines. he's been on the winning side for the last few seasons he's been apart of the teams that blew out Michigan in the last few years and Michigan finally beats them, does a celebration not attacking, mocking, or disrespecting anybody, and he says he's "lost all respect" for them? give me a break just because you werent offered a scholarship to Michigan and your big brother bailed on the university is no reason to cry when the skinny little wimp you push around finally hits puberty and beats the hell out of you. what a cry baby. zach boren was once high in my eyes among NCAA football players simply because of his toughness, but not anymore. it is I who has lost respect for him. btw, i dont think zach is going to find much playing time in urban meyers new spread. maybe thats why he's sour! bring on the Karma! we'll see you in the horseshoe!

Ouch....sounds like some poor losers ! Get a life, celebrating any win is special - and harmlessly on your home field ! Bad taste is planting a flag on opposing teams fields (osu did), ripping down the victors banner before Michigan came out on the field (osu did), a coach running out on the field and hitting an opposing player (osu did), or maybe berating a winners celebration upon getting your butts kicked (osu did).
