Shades of 2006?

The Michigan football team is unbeaten and can improve to 6-0 for the first time since that year with a victory Saturday against Northwestern (7 p.m., BTN).

A 5-0 start, the 58-0 victory against Minnesota and the use of two quarterbacks in the backfield are sure to be among the topics today at Michigan coach Brady Hoke's press conference, which starts at 12:30 p.m.

Hoke has left the building, check out the highlights from his press conference below. Ryan Van Bergen and Kevin Koger also addressed the media.

Brady Hoke: Said linebacker Cam Gordon will practice more and do more this week.

Brady Hoke: Said Troy Woolfolk ran on Sunday and that left guard Ricky Barnum will be evaluated day-to-day.

Brady Hoke: Said he's had guys as tough as Vincent Smith. "I'm just glad he's here at Michigan."

Brady Hoke: On penalties: "We understand that we have to play the game with fundamentals, technique and discipline."

Brady Hoke: Said he thinks his team is overrated. "We're not playing the football we need to play. ... We're not playing well enough."

Brady Hoke: Said how the team runs the option greatly depends on how teams are defending Denard and his particular skill set.

Brady Hoke: Said he doesn't eat on game days before the game and didn't as a player, either.

Brady Hoke: On using the two-quarterback offense at the beginning of the game. "We had a good flow."

Brady Hoke: On if having Denard Robinson helps his team's confidence against a mobile quarterback, "I don't know, it's a good question, I'll have to ask them."

Brady Hoke: On kicker Brendan Gibbons: "He's competing every day (for his spot) just like everybody else."

Brady Hoke: On what impresses him about Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald: "Watching his team and how well he manages a game."

Brady Hoke: On kickoff return coverage: "We're better than we were. ... We still gotta get of blocks better."

Brady Hoke: On Stephen Hopkins at fullback. "I think he did a pretty good job."

Brady Hoke: Said team will not practice at night for preparation of night game against Northwestern.

Brady Hoke: On the package in which both Denard Robinson and Devin Gardner were both in the backfield. "It's another piece to the puzzle."

Brady Hoke: How different is Northwestern when Dan Persa is out of game. "I haven't seen enough yet. ... But when you look at both (quarterbacks) they're both pretty daggone productive."

Brady Hoke: On Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa maybe being out. "It doesn't do anything (to preparation). ... They've recruited well, and it's the same offense."

Brady Hoke: On passing game. "I think the timing was better, I think the routes were better."

Brady Hoke: On being second in the country in points allowed. "It doesn't mean anything right now. ... We still don't blitz worth a dog, and that's gotta improve."

Brady Hoke: On playing on the road. "It'll be different for us."

Brady Hoke: "It was good to keep the Brown Jug, it's good to have the jug here in Ann Arbor. ... Everything gets tougher."

PLAYERS

Ryan Van Bergen: On coaches. "If you had a good game, they'll tell you you had a good game. If you play horrible, they'll tell you you played horrible."

Ryan Van Bergen: "We realize that we haven't played as good as we can, yet we're still having these types of statistics."

Ryan Van Bergen: "I'm excited to get on the road. ... We don't know how this team is going to react on the road."

Ryan Van Bergen: "When you're playing like we're playing, it's a lot more fun to play."

Ryan Van Bergen: On Will Campbell's hit on Max Shortell: "That quarterback did not want to get up." Said defense was encouraged to see Campbell's progress in practice translate to production on the field.

Ryan Van Bergen: Said having a two-quarterback backfield would be tough to prepare for.

Ryan Van Bergen: "We have an unbelievable swagger and belief that we can stop anyone on third and one."

Ryan Van Bergen: Said Greg Mattison started a drill this year to rally to any ball on the ground and take it all the way to the end zone, be it a dropped pass or whatever. Said that the team thought was stupid and a waste of time at first. "Shame on us." Credits drill with defense's ability to score and come up with turnovers this year.

Ryan Van Bergen: Said he thinks there has been more effort this year on defense because the guys are on the field less often and can "sell out" more when they're out there.

Ryan Van Bergen: "It's interesting to see the statistics we've put up considering how we've played and graded out."

Ryan Van Bergen: Said he thinks practicing against Devin Gardner and Denard Robinson in practice helps team tremendously when facing mobile quarterbacks.

Ryan Van Bergen: On Hoke thinking team is overrated "He's never going to over sell our accomplishments."

About Theo: well, you notice that Tater is also MIA lately. I won't dis them - but I do wonder how anyone can get so wrapped up in their own opinions that they quit playin' on the web boards altogether. I agree with the vast majority of M fans: we may be seeing the foundation of the next Michigan legends right before our eyes. For 3 years, I kept wondering how it was possible that Michigan had crumbled into nothing. That made me get a little superstitious and I wondered if Michigan was under some kind of curse. (well, it was getting to that point). I didn't get to see Michigan vs OSU in 1969, so that was part of the mythology but not something I thought about. Then came 1997 and I DID SEE a legend become reality. Now I'm beginning to have the same feeling about Hoke and THIS team.

I can't speak more highly about how much better Hoke makes me feel about Michigan Football and the team. I don't think we deserve and 11/12 ranking; but at least I can say the coach believes in excellence, demands it from his team, knows it is expected of the program, and won't quit till he has it. I also love the weekly "Hoke Talk" following the games. Here's my grading following the Minn game: Offense: A (I'll even through in some extra-credit points for the "3 back option" with Gardner under center -- it was just fun to see what was going to happen with it next play). Defense: A- (I'll jump in with Hoke and say we should have blitzed better; but you can't go any lower with a shutout). Special Teams: B+ (The touchdown that was called back for a penalty almost cost the shutout; but Gibbons is showing potential as a field goal kicker. Its just a bit concerning when the worst team in the big ten is showing the ability to return kickoffs and punts on special teams) Coaching: A (Again, I love the three back option with Gardner under center and its great to see some creativity in the backfield. The Defense looked motivated and looks like a pack of hungry wolverines whenever there is a loose ball on the ground)

Ditto, but I can't get past the picture. Hoke needs to get on a slim fast diet and treadmill when the season is over. He, Mattison and Borges are my new BBF's. I'd hate to see him have a heart attack. Seriously. We love you Brady!

RVB's comments are telling. I admire his honesty, and I think it bespeaks to the fact that this coaching STAFF has a plan. Not just Hoke, but the staff, led by Hoke. Hoke's comments are also great. By the end of the year, this team will love him as much as Bo's first team loved him. And vice versa. Of course, there's a lot of football to be played, but it just seems like this team mentally is improving as much as anything else.

That's funny Jatra, yeah he was predicting a boring, grind it out type Offense going forward, hmm, I see creative utilization of multiple players that are executing better and better each week. I think Theo is trying to find out where he can follow the WCIMFH so that he can maintain the fan club he's president of. While the rest of us are enjoying heading into a golden era in M Football. Go Blue!!! Hey OSU fans, ha ha ha ha ha, see what happens when you don't have cheatin' players playing? Your team looks pathetic and your cockiness is waning I'm sure, and know this, it's gonna get worse before it gets better, couldn't happen to a more annoying, myopic and in denial fan base.
