Michigan 44, Purdue 13: A comprehensive guide to our coverage

Michigan defensive end Craig Roh and linebacker Jake Ryan celebrate after bringing down Purdue quarterback Caleb TerBush in the first quarter at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday.

With two weeks between a a bad loss to Notre Dame and its Big Ten season opener against Purdue, the Michigan football team had a lot of questions to answer.

How would Denard Robinson respond after the worst performance of his career? After struggling against non-confrence opponents, how would the team look against Big Ten competition? And could the defense find the turnover magic its lacked all season?

In a 44-13 win, the Wolverines answered all those questions and more. Robinson led the way with 235 rushing yards, 105 yards passing, a touchdown and no interceptions. The defense came up with four turnovers and Michigan handled the chic pick of late to win the Big Ten Leaders Division with ease.

I kept saying that Purdue was being hyped on the basis of winning against 2nd tier teams and I was right. I kinda expected a "big win" for Michigan but only if they rebounded from their level against so-so Notre Dame. Michigan won't have that problem against Illinois at home next Saturday. Illinois has won only two games; against Western Michigan and Charleston Southern. They haven't scored more than 14 points against the first two Big Ten teams they've faced so far and lost both of those games by at least that much. Denard will climb higher in the record books and Hoke, Borges and Mattison will start to look like geniuses. :-) Meanwhile, the Spartans have only to beat a fairly weak Iowa team at home next Saturday before coming to Ann Arbor to face the Wolverines. What we have here is the first significant game with a Big Ten opponent (and ever-lasting rival) for Michigan. But the Spartans have already lost to OSU (by just 1 point), so it becomes more critical that Michigan keeps its perfect score in Big Ten competition. Things will get interesting.
