Michigan receiver Martavious Odoms returns a punt during a 34-17 loss to Michigan State on Saturday. Odoms broke his foot during the game.

He’s not sure when or how the injury happened, but Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez knows one thing for certain: Martavious Odoms will miss an “extended” period of time with a broken foot.

The junior wide receiver caught a 49-yard bomb down the right sideline seconds before halftime, but didn’t catch a pass in the second half of Saturday’s 34-17 loss to Michigan State.

Rodriguez didn’t know a timetable for his return.

On the season, Odoms has 15 catches for 214 yards. Junior Hemingway will take his spot at the ‘Z’ receiver on the depth chart.

Odoms’ injury was the most serious suffered by the Wolverines in the game. Defensive tackle Mike Martin and center David Molk both sprained ankles, according to Rodriguez, but should be OK for Saturday’s game against Iowa (3:36 p.m., ABC).

After missing the Indiana game because of a knee injury, Michael Shaw returned against the Spartans and carried four times for 29 yards. Rodriguez wasn’t sure if Shaw’s injury lingered.

“A little bit, I don’t know how much so,” he said. “But he should be 100 percent this week.”

Since his return two games ago from a sprained MCL, linebacker-safety Carvin Johnson has worn a knee brace that he’s eager to have removed. Rodriguez said trainers and doctors will determine when he can play without it.

Running back Fitzgerald Toussaint will probably miss his sixth game of the season Saturday. His injured shoulder is still healing, and coaches want him to rest through the upcoming bye week.

Gaining traction

After being thrown at sparingly in the seasons’ first four games, Michigan’s tight ends have touchdown receptions in two consecutive games.

Kevin Koger caught a 3-yard TD pass against Indiana, and Martell Webb caught a 12-yarder against Michigan State -- his first reception of the season.

“Everybody says throw to the tight end, so I thought I’d listen to everybody for a change,” Rodriguez said Tuesday. Koger and Webb’s assignments will change this week against the Hawkeyes. They’ll be counted on to help block 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive end Adrian Clayborn and the rest of the formidable Iowa defensive front.

It's not a problem with Drob, nor with Tate last year. It's with the weasel base football program and it's fans. There is not objectivity. The ONLY team you played pre-Big 10 that had any quality was Notre Dame. And look how they are doing. BG had the 112, now 120th ranked run defense in FBS, and you fans thought the play on them was more a demonstration of your QBs ability. Umass, seriously, Umass? And you beat them and treat it as a good win. Uconn was the most over-rated program in the nation(that's saying a lot seeing the weasels were 17 and after the next two weeks will be lucky to be in top 40) and a win against their pathetic defense had heisman talk already? Then the trash talk, the "we will denardize you" trash. Come on, you finally were going to play a defense worth it's weight it crap(I do not think the MSU defense is even in top 4 in Big 10) and you are stopped BIG TIME. Do you really think you'll do any better against any of the for sure top 3(OSU, Iowa, Wisc)? Come on, the hype was what was driving me nuts. The same crap last year for Tate, 2 years ago for McJumpie, now for Drob, next year who...Gardiner? Take a break and shut up the hype next year until you play B10 and save some face.

JBizzle81 JadedBlackDeath has no idea what the Heisman is or what it is about because Sparty has never had one, ever! Even if DRob does not win it (he probably will not), being mentioned as a contender is an honor. Again, Sparty has no clue.

JadedBlackDepth: You obviously dont have any respect for a GREAT ATHLETE that is Denard Robinson. Whats your beef with him? What did he do to you? The fact is that he is a great kid with great potential and will only get better from here on out. Are you mad that he was (up until saturday) the best offensive player nationally? The kid has no ego, didnt want the press to hype him up at all, doesnt care about stats, AND doesnt even listen to all the Heisman talk. You are prolly mad about the exposure he has got but ive got news for you, the MEDIA does ALL the hyping on this kid. He barely even gives interviews so what is it?

Come on, seriously? The Iowa defense is MUCH stronger than the MSU defense. They will have two weeks to prepare for the September Heisman this year for the weasels. And now hat a textbook plan delivered to them from the Spartans on how to stop the Heisman joke. Molk being fully healthy or not does not matter, the weasels will lose.

An injured David Molk is just what this O-line needed right before we go up against a well-rested Iowa D-line. The news regarding injuries just gets worse and worse. Who are we going to lose next week? Denard? Mouton? To think we could lose another defensive player is just scary. We have no depth.
