Sophomore running back Thomas Rawls (38) reaches for an extra yard during a run at the Michigan spring game on Saturday. Rawls scored the only two touchdowns of the 70-play scrimmage.

1:25 p.m.: That's a wrap. The Michigan spring game ended with some highlights by the defense. The final set of scripted plays were 4th-and-goal scenarios from the 2-yard line. The defense kept the offense out of the end zone on all four attempts, including one big by linebacker Brandin Hawthorne on running back Vincent Smith.

1:12 p.m.: Thomas Rawls added a second touchdown run on a 2nd-and-goal play from the 2-yard-line.

12:42 p.m.: It's "halftime" of the controlled scrimmage. A 43-yard field goal by Matt Wile was added to Thomas Rawls' touchdown run as the day's scoring plays.

12:29 p.m.: Sophomore tailback Thomas Rawls scores the first touchdown of the day. His 21-yard scoring run came on a 4th-and-1 play.

12:01 p.m.: Michigan is wrapping up its special teams drills and about to head into the controlled scrimmage portion of its spring game. The plan is to run 30 plays, take a "halftime" break and run 30 more plays. Estimated attendance: 20,000. And the sun is breaking through.

11:19 a.m.: The Michigan football team's fourth annual alumni flag football game is complete (John Wangler and Alijah Bradley were named co-MVPs) and the varsity team is on the field.

Most questions are still pretty much unanswered. Both lines looked good some times and bad others. That sums up a lot of spring ball. One think that I think can be made pretty certain is that UM is loaded at RB and LB. Fitz, Rawls, and Smith are solid. The LBs were making plays a lot play too.

First off; the stadium was nearly half full so attendance was near 50,000 with myself among them. Second: I wonder why Denard played the first series, got one first down then failed to make another one and never came back. As for the offense, they did a little better than they did last year in the 2011 Spring Game. Fitz did look good you gotta love Rawls will show up a lot once the regular season begins. The O-Line needs to do better at pass protection. Third: The defense was quick and very reactive. They looked much better than the 2011 Spring Game and they went on to have a very good season. They may have lost some valuable seniors in 2011 but this unit could exceed expectations. A big wow to Brandon Hawthorne! Lastly; it's only a scrimmage. Most noteworthy-the defense.

The guy that stood out for me, without a doubt, was Bellomy. It's just spring, but I have to say, I think he's got to be pushing Gardner, hard, for #2. I like how he stayed calm in the pocket, even when it was breaking down. He was accurate. Most importantly, he went through his progression and didn't always lock on to a receiver, which is really hard for a kid when they make that step to the next level of competition. Also though Big Will looked good. Frankly, he doesn't even look like the same guy. All in all, it wasn't a bad day. It's only spring and there is plenty to work on, but I'm still optimistic heading into the season. Not sure we'll repeat last year, but it will definitely be fun

The thing about the majority of Michigan fans is; they come away from the Spring Practice Game disappointed. I think they expect to see the greatest show on earth, the one they saw last season where we were a couple plays from a National Championship game. This is not going to happen, it is what it is 'practice'. Did they forget last season's spring game ? We all know that with this team and these coaches, we have the team to beat bama, nebraska and ohio away and smoke the living daylights out of michigan state and iowa at home on our way to the National Championship. It is what it is.

People often like to say the spring game doesn't really mean anything. I think this is the one time I actually agree with that, at least in the sense that I don't really feel I got anything from it for a change. We didn't see enough of Denard to be able to say anything about him. Fitz was good, but that's nothing new. Most of it was nothing noteworthy, but there also were hardly any big plays to really worry about one unit or anything. Really, the only thoughts I walked away from the game with are 1) we could have another QB competition once Denard is gone, whereas before I'd just always thought it would be Gardner, and 2) my worry for 2012 is, though I understand why other people talk about the lines, wide receiver, and I saw nothing to ease my mind on that as no one really stood out there.

I was wondering... I thought that grouting might mean he is going to lay some tile, whatever that means. I agree that Pipkins is probably going to get some playing time this year.

Why are you putting so much pressure on Rawls? "...only two touchdowns."? Either ease up on Rawls, or get a headline writer who has a high school diploma.

mic...the headline meant to mean; 'only two touchdowns were scored today' - and both of them by Rawls.....no dis on Rawls.

Wow, Brady wasn't kidding when he said the line play needs to improve. offensively, outside of Lewan they are in big time trouble. Defensively, I can't name one lineman that looked good. That's the starting groups. The second groups border on embarassment. Without Denard, this team is slooooooooow! No, receivers. Fitz looked good running. If I am Alabama, I am licking my chops. Put 8 on the line of scrimmage. Bama's db's can definitely cover those receivers in man coverage.
