Kyle Turley still miffed at Brady Hoke, but the Michigan coach doesn't mind
Kyle Turley's still angry at Brady Hoke.
But the first-year Michigan football coach doesn't seem to mind. In fact, Hoke said Thursday that if the situation presented itself, he'd even give the surly former San Diego State and NFL offensive lineman a hug.
Turley, who played with the Aztecs in the 1990s, was critical of Hoke's San Diego State departure in January, and he further fanned the flames Wednesday during a podcast interview with WXYT-FM (97.1).
"I'm impressed with my Aztecs, they've got nothing to lose," he said in the interview. "Hopefully the powers that be out there, man, will just kind of work in San Diego State's favor.
"And Coach Hoke will eat a big piece of crow, and who knows, maybe that dream job will turn into his worst nightmare."
On Thursday, Hoke responded to Turley's criticism during his weekly appearance on 97.1, saying that if the former SDSU star approached him after the game, he'd greet him with a hug.
"When you eat crow, if you put barbecue on it, it's not bad," he joked.
Hoke went on to say that he respects and that he can't allow the criticism to bother him.
"He's a really good guy, he really is, he's very passionate about San Diego State," Hoke said. "I loved the way he played football. Kyle's passionate about his alma mater, which he should be, and that doesn't bother me one bit. It's a passionate Aztec, a former player."
"That can't bother you. Everyone's got an opinion, and he's allowed to have his."

I'm perplexed about Turley's comments that Hoke chased money. I'm under the impression he took the M job w/o even knowing the pay rate. I mean, its safe to assume that he figured he would make more money at M, but seriously? Also, unless I missed it, the article doesn't mention another thing that 97.1 played that Turley said - he said he thinks Hoke threw the SDSU vs. TCU game last year. Turley also made comments about Hoke not honoring his contract w/ SDSU. However, this is also false - buyouts are built into the contract that both sides agreed to, and he was bought out. This is not an example of dishonoring a contract - its an example of following it to a T. Conversely, you can rest assured that if Hoke wasn't performing at a satisfactory level, SDSU would have canned him withouth honoring their end of the contract! These comments really seem to suggest that Kyle Turley doesn't understand the business end of college athletics. Every time Hoke speaks I respect him more. I've said it numerous times, I was underwhelmed with the hire initially, but he has me won over now, and in full support mode!

Turley may have a point about ethics and honoring a contract. Where he really lost me was in claiming Hoke "threw" the SDSU/TCU game. He went from having an honest opinion to slandering Hoke's character with unsubstantiated accusations. "Thou shall not bear false witness" comes to mind. Hoke never lied to anyone, I think he is an honorable man, if not a saint.

THe contract contained a buyout, and he was bought out. I think the contract was honored.

I just want to tell all the commentators on here.......Get a room! sheeesh. Hoke did the right thing, but come on; most coaches would. There are very few clowns, that make it to big programs like michigan. This would have been a story (and it's not), only if Hoke would have fell into such a easy trap. What's next? Headline: "Hoke stops his car, when the traffic light is red!" Woooo.

You know what occurred to me? The fact that Turley is SO angry is kind of telling. If Hoke wasn't a great coach, would Turley care this much?

He is salty methinks. Turley, if you're reading this, you need to get over it. Hoke is a Midwest guy that has the opportunity to coach at the school he's loved his whole life (and also happens to be the most visible brand in college sports). It's mind-boggling to think you haven't moved past this yet. I understand your disappointment but the world does not revolve around Kyle Turley and SDSU football. Move on.

Leave it to WXYT to come up with this garbage. It does put Brady Hoke in a very light and impresses me on what a stand up guy he is. GO BLUE!!!

Gosh ... where to begin with this story. First ... why would AnnArbor.com even print this? Honestly. It's silly. Second ... as "chill out" alluded to ... why would anyone really care what some mostly-forgotten former player has to say about Hoke and his departure from SDSU? From the story is looks like he played at SDSU well before Hoke's time there. Third ... as "a2roots" points out ... it's simply understood and expected that coaches at that level of collegiate football move on when better opportunities present themselves. Anyone who really expects a good coach to stay at a program like SDSU either (a) doesn't understand the process, or (b) doesn't have a very good sense for "good coach" vs. "bad coach." Good coaches move on and up; bad coaches tend to stay at those places. Finally ... this simply shows that Hoke is a better man than Turley and, to be honest, better than me. I would have told Turley to shove it and go back to whatever dead-end occupation he's in. But that's not being a classy man. Hoke shows what classy is. No enmity, no brash predictions of thrashing SDSU ... just an acknowledgement that any outcome is possible when the ball is oddly shaped, and that if per chance Michigan loses then Hoke will take it in stride, learn from it and move to the next game. We have a good man leading Michigan. The stories are stacking up like cord wood about how the players are responding to the expectations and demands Hoke and staff put on them. Young men respond like that to leaders they respect. I've said before ... we are witnessing the birth of a coaching tradition here at Michigan where players will chew glass and walk through walls for Hoke. Later in life these players will speak of Hoke in almost reverential terms. Hoke is doing as he said -- shaping young players to be better men, better husbands and better fathers. Given the choice between Hoke and Turley ... nah ... making that comparison is silly. 'Nuff sa

Coming from Kyle Turley, a loser thug in the NFL, I would be glad he is angry at me. Coach Hoke RETURNED to a place he loved and wanted as a job forever. Tell us Kyle, why did you leave the Rams, Saints and finally the Chiefs? you could not get along witha ssingle coach in your entire NFL career. One coach says you threatened to kill him. Coaches do not randomly make those kind of things up in a league where they can cut you for any reason. The team was not trying to get out of paying you. The truth in that story is far more credible than anything Kyle Turley will ever say.

"When you eat crow, if you put barbecue on it, it's not bad" Best comeback line ever? I just hope that after Michigan finishes their whuppin' on SDSU, that Turley doesn't grab a helmet and try to throw it at Hoke.

Turley needs to have a reality check. Who in there right mind given the opportunity to be head coach at Michigan would turn it down to stay at SDSU.
