Is South Florida interested in Michigan's Calvin Magee?

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Michigan football offensive coordinator and associate head coach Calvin Magee was named as a possible candidate for the South Florida head coaching job by ESPN.com. ESPN cited "a source" in its story.

South Florida fired Jim Leavitt on Friday after an internal investigation concluded that he grabbed a player by the throat and slapped him.

Magee, a 1990 South Florida graduate, was a part of the first South Florida coaching staff when the football program was launched in 1996. He left South Florida after the 2000 season to join Rich Rodriguez's staff at West Virginia.

Magee also is mentioned as a candidate for the job in an article at TBO.com.

Saline, I thought RR was the Fourth choice after Miles, Schiano, and Harbaugh. Thats how i remember it.

ESPN speculators are stating that Pete C is going to coach the hawks. They also said that a lot of the blue chip recruits are trying to call all the assistant coaches and have not been able to do so. The recruits are second guessing going to usc....I hope RR and co are swooping in to pull some of them.

As far as the new AD, I think he will restore the values and reputation of the U of M football program and hold all of the coaches accountable. When RR was hired, he was the third choice, not the second, nor the first. Bill Martin mishandled his hiring and knew very little about him. In addition to his lack of progress, there are other issues. He refused to pay his buy out at WV which resulted in a civil suit. Just prior to BM and MSC being deposed he was forced to pay the buyout with help from the U of M. They couldn't have been happy how he handled his departure from WV, calling TP prior to telling his own team, classless act no matter how you look at it. He's being sued in South Carolina for fraud and is currently under investigation by the NCAA. The NCAA does not send a letter of inquiry unless there is something there. The smart business move for the U of M when the investigation is released is to fire him with cause and bring in someone who has character and represents the U of M's values. Hey, it isn't just me, did you see Braylon's introduction last week? I recall Braylon's magnificant play in the 3 OT victory against Mich State.

Hola AZ, if RR was not the coach, I could care less if he succeeds or fails. He is here at UM so I want him to stick it to everyone by coaching well and the team succeeding. At the en of the day, it all about UM succeeding...no doubt. Va Azul!

chango, The question is not whether anyone wants to see RR succeed or fail, it's whether or not we want to see MICHIGAN succeed or fail. I would hope that every MICHIGAN fan on here wants to see the Wolverines succeed, whether that includes RR at the helm or not. If RR can lead Michigan to success both on and off the field, that is good for Michigan. If he can't...so long. He honestly hasn't been here either long enough NOR successfully enough for me (or a lot of other fans) to have a lot invested in HIM. My allegiance is with MICHIGAN and the success of the program, not with a coach I hardly know and has done nothing but lose since he's been here. RR has to prove THIS YEAR if he will be a part of Michigan's future success or not. Go Blue!

rightmind250 Next year is a make it year not a break it year. Do you want to see RR succeed or fail? That is the question. If UM has a worse record, even I think RR has some questions to answer. To be continued next winter......after a nice bowl win by UM.

Bob- The last link in the story, to the TBO.com article entitled "USF fires Leavitt after concluding coach did hit player" says nothing about Magee anywhere.

Chango, Saban just took Alabama to a National championship in year 3. He took over a program with several failed coaching hires, ncaa investigations, 8 and 7 win seasons. He didn't waste his or anone else's time with talk about my recuits, the cubbard was bare, it takes 5 years to turn a program around etc. If you think for a minute that RR's future is not in jeopardy, you have no clue. 2010 is a make it or break it year for RR and his staff of merry men.

Good grief... just when I thought that the RR lovers couldn't act any more foolish. I love the defense stance of "This has nothing to do with RR." LMAO! Who said it did? Also, whoever suggested that Michigan will be "vastly improved," must be sipping a keg of that Kool Aid.

Wow, wersch talks like he knows Magee personally. My guess is that Magee knows a 'ton' more about what he thinks than wersch. If Magee leaves, perhaps he isn't afraid of RR's future at UM...perhaps he is. The bottom line is, and I actually agree with tater on this, is that USF fired Leavit more for the fact that he has maxed his potential out than for anything else. USF got close a couple of years back and then has kind of sat in neutral ever since. They want a bigger name, a la Tubberville, for their program, and will probably not go after Magee anyway. The wild card might be, however, if Tubberville takes the Texas Tech job... By the way, just heard on the radio that Pete Carrol may be in line to become the next Seattle Seahawks coach. I hope it doesn't happen because I don't like to see the great college coaches aspire to the NFL. When you've got a great job, why leave? Ask Steve Spurrier.

I think RR would be a great fit at USF.

"Hiring any assistant, even one as talented as Magee, is not the way to go for them right now. USF needs an experienced coach to take them to the next level. That will probably be Tommy Tuberville. " Maybe so, and TT is probably the most likely pick. I am not sure that he could do as good a job as Magee. In any case, I hope Magee stays, for reasons both of talent and stability

If Coach Magee decides to leave, it will have absolutely NOTHING TO DO WITH COACH RODRIGUEZ or THE PAST TWO SEASONS!!! Michigan is an up and coming team and over the next couple of seasons will be vastly improved. Coach Magee should have received another coaching job before now with all of the teams that are running the spread. If he gets a head coaching job at another division 1 school, it would be a no brainer to take it, and not because of anything to do with Rodriugez!!!

That might be a good move for CM. Head Coaching jobs dont come up to often and South Florida has a lot of upside. Bill Sheridan should come back to Michigan and be the new linebackers coach. take a break from NFL for a year.

What FOOTBALL related issues do you speak of Salinegoblue...a NCAA investigation based on flimsy story telling? Do you really think that Michigan would bring in a new AD (a former player of Bo's with a strong history of supporting the University) if there was damaging NCAA rules violations coming? That would be a warm way to welcome someone...the university knows a ton more about Rich Rodriguez and his "football issues" than you. If Calvin Magee leaves it's not because he is afraid of Rich Rodriguez's future as head coach at UM

If CM is smart he will go to SFL, it is a no brainer. With all the issues with RR and his tenure at the U of M in jeapordy, CM would be wise to put himself in a position to control his own destiny.
