Denard Robinson's 'happy feet' predicament, and more Michigan football notes
AnnArbor.com file photo
The Michigan junior quarterback plays every snap during a game with untied shoes, and spends most of that time using those unlaced shoes to dazzle defenders and onlookers with his ability to scamper around, through and in-between just about anyone crossing his path.
But as a passer so far this season, Robinson's feet have been saddled with a far less flattering reputation. One he admitted to be true Wednesday.
"I get happy feet," Robinson said.
Through three games this season, the electric Michigan quarterback has struggled to fully adapt to the nuances of offensive coordinator Al Borges' pro-style passing game.
THURSDAY LIVE CHAT
He says that the biggest reason for that so far this season has come from the very same pair of feet that make him one of the country's most dangerous athletes.
"Right off the top when I see (on film) I've made a (bad) throw, it's because of my footwork," he says. "I have to keep getting better at it and keep doing it."
Borges defended Robinson, saying that he needs to do a better job of putting his quarterback in spots where he's able to complete more passes. A mission he felt he better accomplished during the second half of a win over Eastern Michigan last Saturday.
But with that, he also admitted that Robinson's footwork has been a lingering issue. And it's an issue he feels will be fixed, but not overnight.
The first-year Michigan offensive coordinator said that Robinson's footwork struggles aren't anything new. He says that some of his past quarterback pupils, notably San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley, experienced similar growing pains.
"We never assume that they just know (proper footwork) and stop (coaching it)," Borges said. "There's been some drastic improvement in some areas, it's just that the consistency isn't where it's supposed to be. When he does it and does it right, he can sling it.
"And once (a quarterback gets it), they get it. It all seems to come at once."
As far as Robinson's success under center as opposed to shotgun? Borges says that's something he charts week to week and added that regardless of how quickly the run-first signal caller adapts to the Wolverines' new pro-style packages, they'll never stop running spread looks.
"He poses a threat to the defense as a runner best in the shotgun, so it's always going to be part of our offense," Borges said. "We're going to find a way, somehow, some way, to be a balanced football team. We're going to keep working toward that."
Robinson has happy feet, he knows that. And now, he'll have to do something with those feet he's never done before: slow them down.
"I'm just trying to get used to (the new offense), and that takes time," he said. "Practice makes perfect."
Robinson getting used to celeb status on Twitter
After opening a Twitter account nine days ago, Robinson had more than 25,000 followers as of Wednesday afternoon.
Asked if he was enjoying his life on Twitter, Robinson laughed and said it really wasn't a big deal.
"I don't even know how to tweet," he said. "I just made it, I don't know."
Robinson said he's careful about how he uses his account. He's only posted 13 messages to date and doesn't "say crazy stuff."
And about the more than 25,000 follower email notifications?
"I sent it to an email that I don't use a lot," he laughed. "Let's just say that."
Gordon, Herron available for Saturday
Hoke said Wednesday that injured linebackers Cam Gordon (back) and Brandon Herron (leg) are available for the San Diego State game on Saturday.
Asked if Gordon, the team's projected starter at strong-side linebacker, would start Saturday, Hoke said that it wasn't likely.
"He's been out a long time, but he did everything (Tuesday) and so did Brandon," he said. "So we'll just go one day at a time."
Hoke went on to compliment the play of redshirt freshman strong-side linebacker Jake Ryan, who made two starts in place of Gordon and has collected eight tackles (two for a loss).
"I think Jake's done a couple good things, he's nowhere near where he will be as a player being just a redshirt freshman," Hoke said. "But he's done some good things."
Keep on singing
Asked why he looked upset Saturday when the team ran to the student section to sing "The Victors" after beating Eastern Michigan, Hoke said it was because the squad failed to score a touchdown on its second to last drive.
And any frustration had nothing to do with the fact that the team carried out its tradition of singing the fight song with the students in Michigan Stadium.
"That's fine, students are important and I hope they get there early (this week)," Hoke said. "We'll need a lot of noise."
Odds and ends
Hoke said freshman quarterback Russell Bellomy has done a nice job of simulating San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley in practice this week. In addition, redshirt freshman tight end Ricardo Miller has spent the week mimicking SDSU tight end Gavin Escobar. ... On Tuesday, freshman kicker Matt Wile said he successfully made a 59-yard field goal in practice recently. On Wednesday, Hoke confirmed that if the situation occurs, he has no issue with sending Wile out for a field goal of 50 yards or more.

Michigan should take SDSU very seriously. Talent wise they are the second best team UM will have faced this year; and they are the best coached team Michigan will have faced this year. I love Denard, but Michigan' s offense has been dead this year when he's taken the snap from center and dropping back to pass. Against a high scoring offense like SDSU, Michigan may not have the luxury of practicing their new west coast offense for a quarter or two before they let Denard take the snap from shotgun and wreck havoc. I know Borges is trying to keep Denard's carries down to minimize the chance of injuries, but I'd rather see more runs to Smith and Touissant than wasting plays on Denard dropping back in the pocket. Go Blue!

Wile kicked a 59-yarder? Then why are his kickoffs consistently 60 yards? No defense coming at him and he's kicking off a tee. Average kickoff distance should be a good 10 yards beyond a kicker's longest field-goal. I have yet to see the big leg we've heard about. Maybe it's there in practice, but not in games yet. He also booms punts in warm-ups.. some sailing 50 yards in the air, but put him in a game and it's a different story. I hope Brady (or the ST coach) doesn't try this kid much beyond a 40 yard FG. In-game nerves change all kinds of impressive practice stats... at least for true freshmen.

SDSU had never defeated a BCS team until their victory over a pathetic Washing State team last week. Just for the record WSU has won 5 games over the last four years! SDSU had also lost 19 straight times to PAC 10 teams until last week. SDSU struggled to defeat a very pedesterian ARMY team this year with their other victory coming against Division II Cal Poly. With all of this in mind, if the Wolverines let this wannabe come in and defeat them or even play them close it will be an embarassing day for Mishigan football.

Hey Mark, uh....okay buddy, whatever. Do you really consider SDSU a step down in competition? Your post makes no sense to me pal. Anyway, so I was listening to the local sports talk show here in San Diego and Marshall Faulk was on and was stating how U-M had been awful the past 3 years (thanks to the WCIMFH, a dubious impression for people to have around the country). He feels the SDSU players will be much more jubilant after the game than before the game. He did say that the U-M program is headed in the right direction and Hoke is a great coach and appreciated what he did in San Diego. Locally people are really happy they ended up with a solid coach like Long considering they lost Hoke, who was really popular out here. We were real close to having Long be our Defensive Coordinator, he didn't want to be a head coach much anymore and enjoyed being a coordinator more, but he felt bad for the kids after losing Hoke and felt like he owed it to them to maintain some continuity and they seem to be in a good place, I root for them except for this Saturday of course. Go Blue, I believe it will be a tough game but we will win in the lower double digits, something like 27-17.

Mick I lived all over San Diego, I lived in Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, La Mesa, San Diego proper and Del Mar. I loved it. I even had season tickets to the Aztecs, when Marshall, Darnay Scott and L'Roi Glover played there. I, like you, will be rooting big time for Michigan, because I have always been and always be a Michigan fan. I also think this is going to be a scary game for the Wolverines. But I hope the Wolverines win. GO BLUE!!

Marshall missed something...Michigan went to a bowl game last year with a bunch of sophomores and juniors. Whether it is Hoke or if it was Rodriguez, the team is progressing and should beat SDSU. Sorry Marshall.

I'm siding with the both of you two. I think this one will be far from a yawner. Should be a good game. Greg Mattison says SDSU's Ronnie Hillman will be the best back Michigan has seen this season. He looks legit, without question. But, the Aztecs don't have Denard Robinson. And regardless of the passing inconsistencies, he's an ultimate game-changer with the ball in his hands. Who leads the game in rushing Saturday, gang? Hillman or Robinson (or someone else)?

Truly, I think we will have trouble stopping the SDSU offense. On the flip side it looks like they have trouble on defense too.

No problem with this Saturday's matchup Wolverines! Might I suggest that on Friday night, in anticipation of such a step down in competition, that you pound down as many burritos as you can locate, and wash 'em down with a bottle of good Tequila...
