Dave Brandon talks about the NCAA, SEC and the Michigan brand

By Pete Bigelow

What's more daunting: the NCAA or Securities and Exchange Commission?

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon answers that question and more in a one-on-one interview posted today by the Sports Business Daily. One topic he did not address - Rich Rodriguez's future as Michigan football coach.

Here's the link to the full Q&A in the Sports Business Daily.

3&Out, D21, Blu-n-Tpa, & all the other fellows: I have enjoyed having these discussions with you all although we have had different opinions and although we very rarely agreed on anything. This is my last post on this forum. I will stop posting comments and I will no longer visit this website. I am tired of the editors pulling some of my posts for non-sense reasons. I can understand that some posts may deserve to be pulled, but I have been taking some extra precautions not to cross the line and I have been particular about what I post. However, it seems like some posters do get singled out by some "editors". It seems sometimes that no matter how one tries to write a post in accordance with the rules, if it doesn't suit the "editor" himself/herself, that post will get pulled for some non-sense reasons. I thought a forum or blog was there to entice discussions between interested readers, but apparently if a post does not sit too well with an "editor", that is no longer the case. This unchecked censorship is a shame for a newspaper that supposedly stands for freedom of speech. Adios Amigos! Theo, Tater, & all my other fellow RR supporters: Keep up the good fight! 3 And Out "The Rich Rod Error has already cost Michigan's athletic dept. over $20 million dollars in just 3 years... wow... all of that $ for 6-18 record in the Big Ten" Another good point. It's costing us $3,333,333 per BT win... ouch!

Skipit3 "Why don't we just drop it? It's easier and more convenient to point out the bad stats and totally ignore the good ones." That's because there are so many more bad stats than there are good... too many bad stats to ignore. And you cannot ignore a 15-21 overall record and especially the poor 6-18 BT record... plus 0-3 vs OSU, 0-3 vs MSU, 0-2 vs Iowa, 0-3 vs PSU, 1-2 vs Wiscy... We all know the D stats and the special teams stats & performance are horrendous; and the O stats overall are pretty good, but not great (for example only 4th in scoring in the BT). But what about these stats - these are stats that reveal good or not-so-good coaching, and many are for the O (which is where RR is supposed to be a genius or guru): LAST in the BT in turnovers; 6th in the BT in penalties; 9th in the BT in Red Zone Offense; last in the BT in time of possession (not good with a terrible D). Way too much to ignore and say "oh well, let's keep RR for at least another year".

SI3, (Did you include me in 'and company?' I guess I can live with that association.) Fans is short for fanatics! By definition those people are emotional and can be hot-headed. The basis of my evaluation is strickly on the field. Are players playing the best positions for the good of the team? Are game plans created to meet the upcoming team Michigan is playing the next weekend? Are all three aspects of the team, the O, the D, and special teams, prepared to do what needs to be done to win? After three years I can say the football team is not progressing. In some areas it has moved backwards alarmingly and that's all on the coaches. Since RR is the head coach, and he appears to ignore repeated mistakes on D and ST, he bears the fans anger. And rightly so. You ask "us" to be more patient because RR knows his job is on the line. And,if he stays he's going to work really hard to make it better. I think he's aware of the problems, he just doesn't know how to fix them. How would you fix special teams and the D becuase after 3 YEARS I don't think RichRod has a clue.

Why don't we just drop it? It's easier and more convenient to point out the bad stats and totally ignore the good ones. Yes, the defense & special teams were atrocious this year. In fact, if it wasn't for them, Michigan could have won more games this year. Do you people actually believe that RR, knowing his job is on the line, will not work his tail off to improve these two squads? I guess Dantonio should have been fired last year for that dismal season? I guess you guys just woke up one day and suddenly you have accomplished everything you wanted to accomplish in life with no setbacks and no obstacles. I guess those couples that have stayed married for 50+ years had it easy the whole time they were married. Speaking of marriages, impatience is the main reason that at least 50% of them fail in our society. No point for us to keep having this discussion because you guys only feed on the negatives surrounding this football team. Mr. 3&out wanted RR gone since his 2nd year. In fact, he was hopeful that the team would fail this year so he could justify his point and get patted on the back for being right about the situation. Therefore, there is no point of trying to reason with a person with such bias. The rest of you are understandably hurt and emotionally scarred by those losses, which is why you want RR gone regardless of what he might possibly be able to bring on the table if given a fair chance. Only time will tell who was right or wrong about this situation!

Skipit3 "RRs winning record at UM so far is nothing to be proud of"... RR does not have a winning record at UM - that's why people want a new coach. His overall 15-21 and BT record of 6-18 are FAR from winning, that's the problem. Skipit3 "I am just prudent not to rush to a premature decision to replace RR. I guess the same can be said about you having fear to gamble on RR for one more year. The fact of the matter is, fans are not always right. In fact, fans are probably wrong most of the time because their rationals are mostly based on feelings and emotions." Based on the FACT that RR is 15-21 and 6-18 in the BT in 3 years; based on the FACT that our D has gone from 24th to 65th to 84th to 110th in the country during RR's 3 years; based on the FACT that recruiting ratings have gone down the last 2 years under RR; based on the FACT that our special teams are terrible and we do not even have a FG kicker that can make 40% of FG's... wanting a new coach is not based on "feelings and emotions", but on the FACTS. This is not fear. It is prudent to look at the FACTS and then to want to make a change to improve the situation. By far the majority of the people that comment here based on emotion and feelings are those that support RR.

skipit, RR has never taken over a losing program so, therefore, he has never had to turn one around. WVU was a winner when he took over, having gone 8-4 the year previous. We all know UM was already a winner as well. Harbaugh, on the other hand, truly turned a losing program around. That team was 1-11 when he took over. The only losing RR has ever turned around is the losing he created himself (going 3-8 at WVU in year 1 and 3-9/5-7 in his first two seasons at UM). Just an FYI.

Sat, Dec 11, 2010 : 1:19 a.m.

@3&out, D21, & Co. Yes, there is a parallel to be made between the coaching "SITUATION" of Notre Dame back then and UM's current situation. In both cases, there were Fans just like you with a "Microwave Oven" mentality, wanting instant results simply because of their personal feelings against the current coach. Many Notre Dame fans simply did not like Ty for whatever their reasons (Note that I want to leave race out of this). Likewise, many of you simply don't like RR for whatever your reasons. You can use the NCAA violations all you want, but if RR was winning many of the hypocrites would not even make a big deal of those so-called violations. The fact that Tys winning record at ND was not the greatest and RRs winning record at UM so far is nothing to be proud of, that has only accentuated the bad feelings towards those two coaches. With feelings involved, there is no way RR would be given a fair chance and the benefit of the doubt after 3 years. RR has turned losing programs around just like Harbough has. So, that is not even a valid point. FYI, there is a distinct difference between fear and prudence. I don't have any fear to gamble on Harbaugh; I am just prudent not to rush to a premature decision to replace RR. I guess the same can be said about you having fear to gamble on RR for one more year. The fact of the matter is, fans are not always right. In fact, fans are probably wrong most of the time because their rationals are mostly based on feelings and emotions. That's why a smart AD will always use the right tools to make the right decisions, not your opinions or wishes.

Comparing Weis to Harbaugh...is a HUGE fallacy. First of all...what was Charlie Weis before he went to Notre Dame? Well...he never played college football.... never was a college football head coach...and he was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. So was Josh Mc Daniel. And what makes a great NE offensive coordinator? Answer: Tom Brady. Tom Brady is the reason for NE's success, and Bill Bellichik to a lessor degree. Just about any OC has had great success there... with Brady (INcluding their current OC lol).... Brady gets it done with hodge podge OCs and hodge podge receivers and RBs. Every NE OC that goes on to a better job should pay at least 80% of their salaries as a kick back to Tom Brady. Tom Brady MADE Charlie Weis. Weis was in way over his head at ND....yet he still had WAY better success than Rich Rod has at Michigan LOL! No...we have already talked about Harbs... All American QB at Michigan. Quaranteed victory vs tUOS and beat them 2X. 16 year NFL career, including Pro Bowl and 1 dropped pass away from a Super Bowl. 1998 NFL QB Challenge winner. Ring of Honor for the Indy Colts. QB coach for the Oakland Raiders. Assistant coach for his father at Western Kentucky. Turned around a San Diego program and made them champions... Turned around a BAD Stanford program and put them in to the BCS. There is no comparison... leave fat Charlie out of it!

Skip, I didn't miss your point. I get it. I just don't see the parallel. Ty W. wasn't nearly as bad as RR is. And, I agree that hiring coaches is always far from a sure thing, but given the pluses I mentioned earlier, his track record is as good as Michigan is likely to see for a long time. Jim HarbAugh, note the "A" is a proven college coach, from a family of coaches, currently having the best season his current school has seen in, maybe forever, and, he's the first choice, not the 4th one. Here's the thing, since we all know Weis didn't work out, wouldn't it have been better to go in a different direction in year 3 than wait until year 5? Just wondering.

Back in 2005 there was talk of Urban Meyer coming to Michigan. "He is a Big Ten Guy" was battered about. And he is. With RR in trouble, DB talking about the program, 1-9 against OSU, it would appear to me... - I predict - Urban Meyer will be the coach of Michigan on Jan 2, 2011!

@Blu-n-Tpa, You are missing the point that I'm trying to make. The Irish nation just like some of the UM fans today wanted Ty out so badly in exchange for Weis, a Notre Dame alum. Although Weis was never a HC before, he was considered a brilliant offensive mind for the New England Patriots and even won a Super Bowl with them. Many Irish fans considered him a savior for the Irish football program just like many of you guys now consider Harbough a savior for our football program. Do you know see where I'm getting at? To make a long story short, things didn't quite work out as hoped and you know the rest of the story. This is not a comparison between Weis' resume and Harbough's; this is rather a comparison of the Notre Dame situation back then and UM's coaching situation now. If history has taught us a lesson, it is to be careful what you wish for. The fact of the matter is, there is absolutely no guarantee that Harbough is indeed OUR SAVIOR. It is only an assumption, a belief, a hope, which may or may not materialize.

Quietly watching from the outside and patiently waiting for the next tOSU/UM match-up, it's facinating to watch the treain-wreck that the UM FB program has become. The BLUE-bloods got overly excited after pounding a few weak teams. Then as the Big Ten season arrived, the expected losses arrived and calls for RR's head increased. By the time tOSU finished with you guys, everyone knew RR had to go. Now you have been invited to the prestigious "Gator Bowl" against the "overwhelming" perennial FB power, Miss State. Suddenly, the BLUE alums are excited again and the everyone thinks RR may win this game. Some are worried about losing him to Florida. My, how times have changed.

Hey, I thought RR was going to go to Florida. Or Miami! Maybe that's why he was so happy yesterday at the Gator Bowl news conference, he has a job offer. Two can play that game. Harbaugh was listed on the front of the Sports page of the St. Petersburg Times, along with a half a dozen other coaches. Almost all the others had histories with ties to Florida and/or the SEC. (The conference, not Wall St.) There was an interesting quote from Jeremy Foley, the AD at UF that is must reading for David Brandon, Michigan's AD. And I quote: "In coaching searches, no matter what sport, you have to get in front of them, and you need to find out if they are a fit. Not just if they can coach, but if they are a fit for this institution, for this community, for this athleic prgram, and likewise, are we a fit for them.?" Mr. Brandon, when you do your review of any coach at Michigan or any future coaching hire, these words, or something like them should be a part of your mind set. Go Blue!

@si3 Weis NEVER played football at ND. Not a snap. He also didn't play a down in the pro's. Weis NEVER had a head coaching gig in college or the pros so given all that I think ND hired a coordinator for the head coaching position. Square peg, round hole. Harbaugh starred at Michigan playing QB for the fabled Coach Bo and was very successful doing it. He then played 15 seasons in the NFL, being very seccessful in that career. He has head coaching experience in college. He is taking his team to a BCS bowl with a record of 11-1. And he appears to get the most of out of his players, which by itself would be most welcomed here at Michigan. Players want to be succussful and Stanford will have another player in NYC this weekend with a chance to win the Heisman trophy. So please save us the comparison. I saw this Harbaugh quote online in a ranking of all time UM QBs: Jim Harbaugh: Harbaugh, a three year starter (1984-86), was the first quarterback in school history to throw for 300 yards in a game. He is certainly one of the finest quarterbacks to have ever played at Michigan. In 1986 he was an All American selection, finished third in the Heisman vote, and he finished second in the nation in passing efficiency. In his career he threw for 5,449 yards which ranks fifth on the All Time list at Michigan. Harbaugh, a dual threat quarterback, also rushed for 484 yards and 12 TDs in his career. Harbaughs career completion percentage of 62.4% ranks third in school history. In 1985 Harbaugh led Michigan to a 10-1-1 record and the finished the season ranked #2 in both polls. Harbaughs father, Jack, was one of Bo Schembechlers assistant coaches from 1927-79 and Jim served as aball boy. I lived and died with Michigan, Harbaugh said. Yup Big Daddy, I was referring to the criminal conference in the South which goes by the same name, SEC. Maybe that conference is watching one "Wall Street" movie too many times since one fo the classic lines from that movie, "GREED IS GOOD", apparently has raised the bar in the SEC. Assuming JH comes in and goes 3-9, 5-7, 7-5 with no wins against MSU, OSU, PSU, Iowa and Wisco plus having NCAA violations then any coach for that matter should go in 3 years. But I doubt if JH or any replacement would have the same negative record as RR. I do not know a player who wears a winged helmet who would not want to play for a coach that wore a winged helmet 25 years before them. I do not know why an NFL aspirant would not want to be coached by a 15 year NFL veteran. Why would these players leave? Not all coaches are stubborn scheme coaches who would put their schemes first than player skill. I doubt if JH would bench the good players on that team.

Big Daddy... typically it takes a top coach 2 recruiting classes + his outstanding coaching to turn a team around. I look at our OL and it should be fine, there is enough talent there + the zone blocking schemes would be similar... WR, got enough talent there now and Harbs would bring in some NFL type guys again.. QB, if Devin and Tate stay we are fine...I honestly believe that if D Rob would stay he would be the QB under Harbs. Harbs ran a spread at San Diego and has some spread looks at Stanford...I believe that he is smart enough and flexible enough as a coach to give D Rob a solid shot to keep the QB job and also keep D Rob upright because he wouldnt have 25 designed runs a game... Defensively its OK to blow the whole thing up and start with a new scheme... if Harbs brings Fanzio and his 3-4 here, that would be a fine start we just would be pretty short on LBs and CBs to start... it would be thin back there but I do believe that they coach em up, teach them to tackle and we win at least 8-9 games next year in Harbs first season...

The Pizza Man is right! The NCAA is accountable to nobody and is in need of a MASSIVE overhaul. On one hand a Georgia FB player is suspended for 4 games for selling a game jersey HE LEGALLY OWNS. (Under law, ownership of a gift irrevocably transfers to the recipient. An outside party cannot change cannot impose conditions on the gift after the fact. Unfortunately, if the player sued, he would be 50 years old before the games would be reinstated.) On the other hand, a father can shop his son to the highest bidder. Of course, we need to recognize, this was in the SEC. Should we expect more?

BigDaddy...Frankly speaking, Rich Rod and his assistant's have done a pretty poor job in recruiting and there is not a ton of talent left on the team, other than Carr Recruits like Mike Martin, Jr. Hemingway, Molk, Woolfolk and Stonum who have a year left.... what top talents are tied to Rich Rod other than maybe Shoelace? Roh? Tate (probably would stay if RR is gone)... Devin Gardner would most likely stay because he would ABSOLUTELY fit Harbaugh's scheme... Not worried one iota about losing any defensive "talent"... not at all when you have 3 stars and walk ons playing out there due to RRs poor defensive recruiting... on offense... the OL will probably stay...slot receivers can go if they want.... D Rob wed love to have you back... The point is that one or two players tranferring, may be painful if its D Rob but other than that Rich Rod is leaving not many crumbs in the cupboard so a) doesnt really matter b) probably wont happen much when players see that Harbaugh is superior in every way....and C) Harbaugh would start recruiting the NFL type talent AGAIN that Carr and Michigan did for the previous 40 years before the RR Error....and THAT will be HUGE!

As someone who has played D1 football, not at Michigan but support the team, be careful what you wish for. While there are man valid concerns hardcore Wolverine fans have, there are relationship reasons that you forget about between players and coach's. Much of the new talent is tied to RR and his assitants, and while the witch hunt for RR continues players and coach's tend to circle the wagons to insulate themselves from the negativity. If RR was to be let go,dont be surprised if Denard, Devin Gardner, and other young talent whom are loyal to their coach's leave too, thus leaving a bigger deficiet of players then there is now. Given the time to grow the program and adapt to the Big Ten style they will be successful....Be patient people I know it is a society of instant gratification but constant change creates instability! 35 percent Michigan football fans would like to see Rich Rodriguez replaced as head coach, a new poll found Thursday. Just over a third percent of self-identified U-M fans said they want Rodriguez replaced as coach, while 32 percent said they would like to see him continue as head of the program. 33 percent of fans said they were unsure. Rodriguez suffers from a slightly lopsided favorability rating as head coach. 20 percent of Michigan fans say they have a favorable opinion of Rodriguez, according to a Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey released Thursday. 38 percent have an unfavorable opinion of Rodriguez, while 42 percent were unsure. If Rodriguez were to be replaced as coach, Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh favored by Michigan fans among several replacement options that were tested. 64 percent of Michigan fans said they would want to see Harbaugh replace Rodriguez. 23 percent favored LSU Coach Les Miles, and three percent favored San Diego State University Coach (and former U-M assistant) Brady Hoke named as the replacement. Nine percent were unsure. The poll, conducted Dec. 3-6, has a 4.9 percent margin of error for the sample of self-described Michigan fans. Updated 12:36.
