Dave Brandon on Big Ten divisions: A Michigan-Ohio State split may make sense
By AnnArbor.com Staff
Michigan and Ohio State don't need to be in the same divisions, Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said on WTKA-AM (1050) today. "Although I love playing Ohio State in the last game of the year, I don't think it's necessarily a slam dunk that that's going to continue."

Henceforth, "The Game" shall now be know as "The Meaningless Game". The only thing UM and OSU will play for during October would be bragging rights. No conference title. No division title. They can't even knock out the other school from the championship game nor can you even spoil the other schools season in October. It becomes meaningless. Expansion creates change. If the "Big 10" brand name is so important, you have to protect the things that create the value of that brand. The only way to keep the game at it's current level is to have it be a season-ending game determining a championship. Their division championship.

This proves it. When the AD says UM v OSU may not be played as the last game of the season and that's okay - that means the rivalry is dead as we knew it. And so is UM football for at least the next 5 years.

What's in it for Michigan? Brandon knows that having OSU in another division makes UM's path to the conference championship game easier. With UM and OSU in the same division it would be just that many more years before UM makes the BT championship game. It would eventually happen, but Brandon wants more immediate results. I do find it odd that he's seemingly so cavalier about ending THE GAME as it is now structured. There's no way that matchup holds as much interest if it is elsewhere in the season. Sure, if there's another meeting for the championship, that would be big. But how often will that happen? If I were a UM fan I'd feel let down. Of course, putting OSU in the division that does not contain MSU and UM is a good thing for MSU. But I still don't like it.

There are only 2 athletic directors in the Big Ten that don't want the Michigan/Ohio State game messed with and that is Mr. Brandon and Mr. Smith. But that is only 2 out of 12 votes, so Mr. Brandon was just stating the facts today, when he said change was a coming. Fans are wasting there time with online petitions to Mr. Brandon. It probably won't make much of a difference but petition Mr. Delaney if you want any hope of stoping the inevitable.

Tater, That is the first post I ever agreed with you on. Usually you are crying about MSU or OSU kicking UM's butt. I now see you on a whole different level. Way to ditch the skirt.

Big10, Please name one division with Michigan in it as the BO division and place O-H-I-O state in the WOODY division. It would be nice to honor those late great coaches. By the way, If Big10 needs to add a 3rd division in the near future, it henceforth shall be called the "LITTLE BROTHERS" division with msu strongly and accurately reflecting that division's namesake.

Tater seems right on with this one. With that said, I need to go back to bed, this must be a bad dream.

Right on Mr Brandon I agree it's not necessary although I like watching it I can live without it but I would like to see Mich. play Nebraska every year.
