Darryl Stonum will practice while redshirting Michigan football season; Matt Wile could get look at punter
Michigan football coach Brady Hoke did not say much Monday about his decision to redshirt receiver Darryl Stonum and suspend punter Will Hagerup (four games) and receiver Terrence Robinson (one game).
Hoke announced the moves in a statement released Sunday, the day his team reported for fall camp. The Wolverines began practice Monday.
Hoke said Stonum, who is serving two years probation after he pleaded guilty last month to the second DUI charge of his career, would work out with the team throughout the season.

"I'm not going to elaborate on it," Hoke said. "It was a decision (that) took a long time. Darryl has done a great job with what we've asked him to do. We'll leave it at that."
Stonum, who is a senior and will have one year of eligibility left next year, was Michigan’s second-leading receiver last year. He caught 49 passes for 633 yards and four touchdowns.
He also was one of the team's two primary kick returners.
Although Stonum’s redshirt is the most significant loss for Michigan this season, the Wolverines also lose Hagerup, their only true punter, for four games.
Hagerup was suspended one game last season as well. Place-kicker Seth Broekhuizen punted that day, but did poorly.
Hoke said “a couple of guys” punted in practice Monday.
True freshman placekicker Matt Wile could be another candidate to fill in for Hagerup. The San Diego native punted in high school, averaging 42 yards per attempt his senior season.
“You could see him doing both (field goals and punts),” Hoke said.
Changing figures
Hoke, whose new offensive and defensive schemes require bigger linemen
than those of former coach Rich Rodriguez, said several players up front had added good weight during the summer.
Craig Roh (10 pounds), Ryan Van Bergen (10 pounds) and Taylor Lewan (up to 303 after weighing 250 as a freshman) each have put on weight.
Meanwhile, defensive tackle Will Campbell went the other way, dropping from 342 pounds in the spring to about 319 pounds at the start of fall camp. Hoke said last month Campbell, a former five-star recruit from Detroit Cass Tech, had been "overweight" and "out of shape" in the spring.
A Michigan spokesperson said an updated roster with official weights would be released today.
Practice notes
Hoke said players would wear shoulder pads and helmets for practice on Wednesday and Thursday, then move to full pads Friday.
He also said he has scheduled five two-a-days for fall camp, although that could change depending on how the team is progressing.

Wow - way to go will to go Will Campbell, 23 pounds, and others who lost or bulked. "Hoke, whose new offensive and defensive schemes require bigger linemen than those of former coach.....", folks that says it all (Bigger, Stronger, Better !) I mean, This is Michigan, for God's sake ! Not real concerned about the punting, we shouldn't have to see any until after the michigan state game - but this is the second suspension for Hagerup in the last 3 games (inc. last season), get it together kid ! Hoke handled the Stonum situation most admiral - took careful time in considering, made the right decision, and keep silent about other specifics. He for sure would be starting for sparty and bucky - you know this ! MgoBlueForTiM.................Will Campbell, have a Dagwood sandwich there tonight buddy....... Wallmart sparty, assistance on lane 13 please, pick up a box of 'Get-a-life'.....

Seriously, I hope we don't find ourselves having to rely on Wile's 42 yard average too often.

"Hoke said players would wear should pads and helmets for practice on Wednesday and Thursday, then move to full pads Friday. " Kyle, what are should pads, and how do they differ from would or could pads? :) LGB!

Let Stonum concentrate on graduating. That will be much more important to his life long term than whether he practices with the team.

He can and does both very well, but really needs to control his extra curricular entertainment activities.

As I posted in the previous post about Brady Hoke's dicipline of young Mr. Stonum, first of all Mr Stonum, you owe Coach Hoke a debt of gratitude and to you Coach Hoke I say again, "Well done Brady, well done".

"True freshman placekicker Matt Wile could be another candidate to fill in for Hagerup. There are a few punters in the NFL who can't manage that, if his leg was already that strong in High School, I am thrilled we got him.

I understand that there is a difference, heartbreak, but I was looking at it from a physical strength standpoint. And lets be honest, it isn't like punters have to worry about adjusting to the speed of the game at the next level, they get the ball, they kick the ball, and that's about it. Their process is more or less the same, whether its High school, college or the pros. My point was that if he has the leg strength to average 42 yards per punt at age 18 or 19, when he hasn't even fully grown into his man body yet, it bodes well for him, especially since he is a kicker by trade, not a punter. I am not sure how punting distance translates into FG kicking distance, but hopefully it means that when he is 22, he will also have the leg strength to kick 50+ yard FGs for the Wolverines.

This guy looks like a great last minute pick up by the staff in the slim two weeks they had to fill out this recruiting class. I think both jobs are wide open for him.

And isn't he like a 7th generation UM student? Got the genes already!! I hope he's the real deal, but there is a big difference between high school and big time college athletics. Let's hope for the best. Go blue.
