Coaches say outcome of Michigan-Michigan State game has minimal influence on recruiting

By Pete Bigelow

EAST LANSING - The outcome of Saturday’s annual rivalry game between Michigan and Michigan State (3:36 p.m., ABC) means a lot for coaches, players and fans.

Its impact on recruiting, both coaches said, is minimal.

“It’s probably overrated,” Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez said. “It may make an impact on one or two guys, but it’s more about how the season goes and who you are as an institution.”

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio agreed.

“We have 16 committed guys right now,” he said. “Recruiting is winding down for us, a little bit. … It’s an important game, but it’s more important for the people here and people there.”

I imagine it doesn't affect recruiting much because, for the most part, the two teams recruit different types of players. U-M puts a premium on speed and quickness, even if it means getting smaller players than most Big Ten teams. MSU, on the other hand, is more a pro-style traditional team like U-M was under Lloyd Carr, with an emphasis on strength and size, although their RBs and WRs have good speed. They're more apt to run the ball down your throat than use speed and finesse like U-M. The two teams might compete more for defensive players.
