Brady Hoke's career goals include coaching football at Michigan, San Diego State president says

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Brady Hoke enjoys coaching football at San Diego State. He'd love a shot at Michigan some day, San Diego State President Stephen Weber told the San Diego Union Tribune.

Hoke, an assistant at Michigan from 1995-2002, is signed with San Diego State through 2015 and has a $1.5 million buyout in his contract. Hoke's name has been attached to speculation that Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez may not be retained for the 2011 season.

“If he were offered the opportunity, I have got to believe there is no way we can compete with that,” Weber said Friday. “And I kind of like the fact we have a coach who (would be) in play for a place like the University of Michigan. C’mon, this is a good thing.”

San Diego State (8-4) will face Navy on Dec. 23 in the Poinsettia Bowl.

jalittle12 I did see your posting on Brady's record at Ball State however this was his first job as head coach with a program that wasn't exactly going places. He did rebuild it to a 12 & 1 program and when he went to San Diego State in 2 years he is taking them to a bowl game which they had not seen since the early 90's. Bo had a few tough years at Miami (Ohio) before he became great. I lasted two and one half years hoping RR could do his thing but the news about NCAA violations and what looks like the lack of discipline on this team is enough for me. Cut your losses and start a new with either Jim Harbough or Brady Hoke both quality guys that have Michigan in their blood. This program is about tradition, respect, and discipline and to me that's missing. Bo was always around the practice field when Brady was there and I am sure they exchanged ideas. Jim Harbough may not want the job or might go to the pros and Brady is a very good next choice in case it works out that way. I think UofM is lucky to even have those choices. I am sure everything will work it's self out however I am just not happy with what I see right now.

I would be on board with the "give him his full five years" crowd if it wasn't for the behavior off the field. The smelly way he was hired in the first place and then the many things already mentioned over and over on these forums to me are dealbreakers. The banquet, with his shameful begging for his job and turning a special night for the players, especially the seniors, into a media fiasco........too much! Also, maybe I am being simple but, if he broke his contract with WV (see: buyout mess) how can anyone think it wouldn't be "fair" for UM to break his contract?

The only reason Rodriguez would be obtained for another year is ONLY because Harbaugh is not ready to leave yet. Hoke would be a horrible fit and really can't see that ever happening anytime soon. Harbs is the guy that everyone(boosters, regents, majority of the fanbase) wants and it is just a matter of time(this year or next year) that he is brought in. If Luck stays, which I don't see him doing so, then consider it a done deal that DB brings in Harbaugh the first week of January for an interview. It's going on 2 weeks that Stanford offered another contract, and no signs point to Jim signing anything yet. I understand some of peoples concerns about not wanting to be another ND and giving someone their grace period to run and install their system. I just don't see this a good fit for Michigan, and it needs to be taken care of sooner than later. If Brandon keeps Rich around for another year, then it becomes his mess, and I truely don't believe Brandon wants to be know as the guy that kept Rich Rodriguez around. If Harbs came in and turned this program around in 2 to 3 years and got us back to winning like we should be, Jimmy would become the hometown hero. David Brandon would be branded one of the best AD's of all-time and it is a win win situation for both of the Michigan Alums to make history in the program. Harbs has sent two fine young men, back to back years, off to New York for the Heisman trophy, both were runner up. Not bad for only coaching somewhere for 4 years, with a team that was not known as a football powerhouse, and going 1-11 the year before he showed up. just sayin.

Listen everyone, Hoke name out there for just for show. If it were him then RR would be gone.the.next day after OSU game. HARBAUGH is just waiting to finish the.bowl game. HOKE. Would be a mistake. I would rather have peterson or patterson or even RR for one more yr with a new DC. Its gotta be Harbaugh or Bust. DB would not wait to after the.new yr if Hoke was the new coach in waiting. Just wait and see folks.

Florida just hired Texas' former coach-in-waiting Muschamp! Lets pray that Mack Brown gets on the phone to Rich Rod and invites him to Austin to be the new OC and new "coach in waiting"!!!! RR can take his cruddy staff and reunite Mack Brown with GERG as the new DC down there! Go Blue. NO one bad coach is bigger than our program!

The 5 year rule just makes perfect sense. 5 year recruiting cycle, new coaching philosophy etc. All in for RR and our players and their parents who love him.

tater... Gary Moeller was 6-24-3 as head coach at Illinois. That record is terrible and is grounds for dismissal. Bo had his back because he was his friend, but make no mistake about it: Moeller failed at Illinois. Filtering Rich Rod through what you think Bo would think, is a travesty IMO..... and if anyone is going to do that... then ask yourself this question: Do you believe that Bo would rather have the disgraced Rich Rod be our coach over Jim Harbaugh, who he mentored from age 12 on to All American? Give me, and Bo's spirit a break please. Enough with the spin. It is distasteful to say the least. RR made his own bed and will lie in judgement in it.

Folks, don't speak for Bo. IMO, I don't think Bo would have hired RR in the first place, and would have fired him immediately for NCAA sanctions. That's just my opinion, though. By the way, what ever happened to Miles? His teams have been excellent in a great conference, including far exceeding expectations this year. I'd still take him in a heartbeat. As for Hoke and his three winning seasons in 8 years, he's actually had to take down programs and fix them. RR's hasn't. RR's "great" track record over 18 years as a head coach includes six losing seasons, seven mediocre (6-8 win) seasons, and only four 10+ win seasons. Hardly the record of a "savior" who will someday dominate OSU and the rest of the B10. I don't know how good or bad Hoke is, but I'd personally take him over RR.

Tater Bo would have never allowed RR to be hired to start with. He would have realized the disaster this was going to be from the start. I have confidence that DB will make the proper decision. He understands what is riding on this more than all of us put together. His legacy as AD is going to be formed based on this single decision. He knows what has to be done and he will get it done. I believe the longer this plays out the more confident that JH will be coming to A2.

So, its not good to bring in a coach from West Virginia but its okay to nab one from San Diego State?

Something does not smell right............ Maybe Brandon floated Hoke name out there for some of the anti Richies to support Rich. Brandon I don't care who you hire just get rid of the embarrassment. For all the kool aid drinkers that love his O........... SEVEN FLIPPING POINTS AGAINST OHIO STATE.................. If Richie is given another year DB better put his own job on the line.

Hoke is not a great fit for UM football....though he is a much better fit than Rich Rod and would do a much better job. Harbaugh is our boy. Bring Harbs home Dave Brandon! Rebuild Michigan football the right way.

Facts of life: Jim Tressel > RR Saint Dantonio > RR Jim Harbaugh > RR Brady Hoke > RR Any Div 1,2,3 coach > RR and lastly but not the least Theo212 > RR Have a nice holiday season!

Sorry BlueWolverine, I'm not buying it....Bo had long retired before Hoke started coaching the D-Line here. And did you not see my post on his record with Ball State? He had FOUR losing season in a row, before going 7-5 in his 5th year. Seriously? And we want to run RR out after his 3rd and a 7-5 season? Have you guys lost your minds???? Harbaugh is a HUGE name that would instantly unite the Michigan hopefuls, but other than him, I'm not so sure I want a change. I am NOT happy with the defense or special teams under RR, but making a change, just to make a change is ludicrous. Please have some common sense people!!

Brandon: Could you help me? I'm in a terrible dilemma. RR: Yeah, I don't care much for these foreign players (leftover from the Lloyd era) myself. Brandon: No, I mean I'm stuck... RR: On me? Aw, that's what all the boys say. Brandon: No, silly. Stuck with the $2.5 million buyout of yours starting Jan 1st 2011. RR: Uh, yeah. This modified excerpt above was from the original Three Stooges dialogue between the Girl and Moe: Girl: Could you help me? I'm in a terrible dilemma. Moe: Yeah, I don't care much for these foreign cars myself. Girl: No, I mean I'm stuck... Moe: On me? Aw, that's what all the girls say. Girl: No, silly. Stuck in the mud. Moe: Uh, yeah.

I know Brady from his years at Michigan and this program would be awesome under his direction. If you want Michigan football back you would get it with Brady Hoke. Think about his mentors with Bo being one of them. Ball State under Brady played Michigan a few years back and gave them a heck of a game. I would have him as the Michigan coach in a heart beat!!!

It is odd that the AD of SDSU would make a statement like that. It almost sounds like he wants to get rid of him. I'm sure that's not the case, but why not simply give the canned response about how you expect Brady to coach at SDSU for a long time?

I'm not sure why Weber disclosed this - kind of dumb if you ask me. But it doesn't mean anything really. Personally, I'm not too excited about someone like Hoke being the coach. I think I'd rather stick with Rodriguez or Harbaugh (if Brandon decides to give RR the boot). I hate to say it, but there won't be too many big time coaches lining up at the door to interview for the job given the huge mess we have here with a lack of defensive players and kicker. It would best be suited for someone with a spread philosophy and defensive mindset.

Man, You guys really need to calm down. It didn't say that Brandon wanted this guy, just that Hoke made it a career goal. My career goals are being President of the United States, coaching the U.S. to a world cup victory and retiring by 45 as a multi-millionaire! Doesn't mean any of it will happen! Do you guys even know what speculation means?

Hoke is a pretty good coach and may surprise many of us if he is hired. I also think he would bring a better balance to the team than his predecessor. He's also been very honorable and responsible for his teams that he coaches, and has never thrown his player under the bus. Now that may make "Slappies" heads explode!

After Harbaugh, Hoke is my choice, provided we make a change. Hoke is a very good coach and would probably bring some ex-Michigan coaches back to the defense. We could do a helluva lot worse than Brady Hoke. Having said that, I still hope it is Harbaugh if we make a change. GO BLUE!

Haha, just like the last coaching selection. Fire current coach Les miles......No Greg Shiano.....No Harbaugh......No Rodriguez.....YES! If michigan gets Hoke then that will be the second coach in a row that michigan didnt want, and hardly anybody has heard of.

Sat, Dec 11, 2010 : 12:43 p.m.

I would be thrilled with a Brady Hoke hire. It would be amazing to see all of the "Fire RichRod, Hire Harbaugh!!1!!" heads explode in unison.

Sat, Dec 11, 2010 : 12:41 p.m.

Well, what happened to giving a coach an opportunity to continue if he shows improvement? Except for his second season, Hoke has improved every year....just like RR. And his second year at San Diego St is a three game improvement over RR's second and even better than his 2010 season. Hoke is respected by his peer's just like RR, and his players love him just as well. So why not Brady Hoke? If my memory serves me well, I believe he runs a version of the spread offense which will make you "spread lovers" all warm and fuzzy inside. Though, I was just poking fun, this realistically could happen. So why all the boo-hooing?

will you guys calm down? nobody said this is "THE GUY" or "THE PLAN". But it is an option. Although I am still in the camp that says "Jim Harbaugh #1.. Rich Rodriguez #2".

jalittle12

Sat, Dec 11, 2010 : 12:10 p.m.

Wow, seriously?! If that's the plan Dave Brandon, abort the mission ASAP! Brady Hoke is a joke. It is pretty simple. Harbaugh or RichRod. Period. Not other options. If you can get Jimy, then do it quickly, but if not, RichRod deserves another year with almost all his team coming back. Hoke's record speaks for itself.... Ball State: 2003 4-8 2004 2-9 2005 4-7 2006 5-7 2007 7-6 2008 12-1 San Diego St. 2009 4-8 2010 8-4 3 winning season's in 8 years. Please tell me this can't be "THE GUY"?

Sat, Dec 11, 2010 : 12:10 p.m.

David Brandon is gonna dump RichRod for Brady FREAKING Hoke.WOW!!! He doesn't even have a winning record anywhere he's been, but that's fine for Michigan fans because he's a "Michigan Man".Is Brandon gonna pay his buyout as well? That would really cement your legacy Brandon.
