Wisconsin's Jon Leuer out indefinitely; Purdue's Lewis Jackson working his way back

The Wisconsin basketball team lost a key player while it upset then-No. 4 Purdue on Saturday.

Forward Jon Leuer fractured his wrist during the 73-66 win over the Boilermakers, Wisconsin announced Monday. He will be out indefinitely and will have surgery Tuesday.

“Obviously, I’m disappointed by the injury, but I plan on being as big a part of this team as ever,” Leuer said in a statement released by the university. “I will continue to be at all the practices and conditioning sessions and support the team as best I can. I’m confident my teammates can continue the great season we’ve begun and I look forward to rejoining the team.”

Leuer averaged 15.4 points and 6.2 rebounds for Wisconsin (13-3, 3-1 Big Ten).

As far as how it’ll change what Wisconsin does, Badgers coach Bo Ryan said the lost production would not be made up from one player.

“For those that have followed us and seen the foul trouble Jon’s been in in several games, you have to give it to someone who is a non-starter,” Ryan said. “It’ll probably be a game-to-game (thing) as far as matchups.”

The Demetri McCamey switch Illinois coach Bruce Weber moved junior point guard Demetri McCamey from a starter to reserve, and the strategy has worked in wins over Iowa and Indiana.

Yet Weber said McCamey may not be reserve for long.

“I think we’d like him to be back in the starting lineup,” Weber said. “We want our best players in there at the start of games to get off to good starts. We had eight straight games where we lost the first five minutes.

“… I just want consistency out of Demetri. He had a good week and a good last couple weeks.”

McCamey is Illinois’ leading scorer at 14.1 points a game and leads the Illini (11-5, 3-0) in assists (95) and steals (28).

Lewis Jackson begins to practice Purdue sophomore point guard Lewis Jackson hasn’t played this season as he recovers from foot surgery. He averaged 5.9 points and 3.3 assists a game last season.

“We really don’t have a date but he’s doing a great job,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “He’s out of the boot about half the time right now. We’re slowly working him out full time. He’s shooting some jump shots.

“He’s not jogging or running yet. He’s working toward coming back. We’ll see in the next week-and-a-half, two weeks how he progresses.”

Michigan plays Purdue (14-1, 2-1) on Jan. 23.

This and that Weber said if he had to pick a Final Four grouping now that maybe he’d hit one, and it’d be more out of luck than anything else due to the unpredictability of the tournament. … Michigan forward DeShawn Sims was named Player of the Week. … In an odd moment, Ohio State coach Thad Matta sounded like he was playing racquetball or squash during his entire time on the teleconference. Could have been the phone connection, though. … Michigan State football player Dion Sims will join the Spartans’ basketball team, although coach Tom Izzo said he wasn’t sure what Sims’ role will be.
