Renovations to Crisler Arena will be good for players, fans, Michigan basketball coach John Beilein says

By Michael Rothstein

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon is one of Twitter’s newest members (@DaveBrandonAD) and in one of his first 140-character bursts, he mentioned ("It's going to be so GREAT!") his excitement of the renovations to Crisler Arena.

While still in the planning stages and with the Player Development Center under construction, Michigan basketball coach John Beilein also seemed excited about the prospects Wednesday.

“The designs I’ve seen are very favorable. … In today’s age, you have to look for the comfort level of people,” Beilein said. “I’m only 6-1, and I sit in those chairs and my knees are right into those babies. … There is some engineering right now that’s done for comfort that wasn’t when Crisler was built.

“I’m excited about it. It’s going to be a good looking place that is both efficient and attractive for our players to work out in.”

Construction on the renovation of the arena is slated to start at the conclusion of the basketball season.

Beilein also said the Player Development Center, which has been under construction since the summer, is on track to open in November. There had been discussions about the practice facility being open earlier, but Beilein said the original November date remains the target.

Everybody wants to fire Beilein. That's the easy part; the hard part is who is going to replace him? Who is out there that is going to come in and start recruiting 5 stars to UM immediately? Calipari? Why would we want somebody like that? He's living on borrowed time with the NCAA. I understand wanting to get better, but nobody out there seems to have anybody in mind as a replacement.

John Beilein needs to worry more about recruiting and less about what Crisler will look like. Three years of recruiting bust have left us "young" and another excuse for bottom feeding. Callipari has landed a number 1 class and we continue to be Mac level. Something needs to change and I do not think it is Crisler. The teams of recent can not even fill the place because they stink it up so bad. No tourney last year was a sign. The NIT is a stepping stone and we could not even make that with a cupcake schedule during early part of the season. MSU will dominate us for years to come. Totally unacceptable! Period!
