Purdue holds on to top spot in the latest AnnArbor.com Big Ten basketball power rankings

By Michael Rothstein

Ohio State picked up a share of the Big Ten regular-season title Tuesday night with an 82-61 win at Penn State but it is Purdue who is grabbing most of the attention lately.

The Boilermakers have ripped through the second half of the Big Ten season and played themselves into the Top 10 nationally and a chance at a No. 2 seed in this month's NCAA tournament.

The run has also given Purdue the top spot for the second week in a row in the AnnArbor.com Big Ten Power Rankings. Where does your team rank?

Reminder: This reflects how teams in the Big Ten are playing right now…not how they are predicted to finish in the Big Ten.

1 Purdue (25-5, 14-3, 1): The Boilermakers will need help (read: Ohio State loss on Sunday) to claim a share of the Big Ten title but no team is playing better than Purdue right now. The Boilermakers have won seven in a row, including a sweep of Illinois and wins over Ohio State and Wisconsin. NCAA tournament projection: LOCK, possible No. 2 seed

2 Ohio State (28-2, 15-2, 2): Jon Diebler tied a Big Ten record with 10 3-pointers last night in a win at Penn State and the Buckeyes clinched at least a share of the Big Ten title. This might be the best Buckeyes team Thad Matta has had since the Greg Oden-Mike Conley team that went to the national championship game. NCAA tournament projection: LOCK, probable No. 1 seed.

3 Wisconsin (22-6, 12-4, 3): The Badgers are locked into the No. 3 position in the Big Ten tournament regardless of what happens in their final two games against Indiana and Ohio State. Essentially, Wisconsin is playing to stay hot having won 7 of 8 and for NCAA tournament seeding. NCAA tournament projection: LOCK, probable No. 4-5 seed.

4 Michigan (18-12, 8-9, 6): This is where it starts to get tricky. The Wolverines are one of three Big Ten teams still realistically on the NCAA tournament bubble. None of the three are playing better than Michigan right now, which has won 7 of its last 10 games with one left, rival Michigan State on Saturday. NCAA tournament projection: BUBBLE ... IN right now, barely.

5 Illinois (18-12, 8-9, 7): Still not sure what to make of Illinois, and that’s probably a bad sign this late in the season. One game remains — rival Indiana on Saturday. The Illini have lost 3 of 4, although two of those losses came at Ohio State and Purdue. If Illinois loses at home to Indiana, it’ll have major problems. NCAA tournament projection: IN, possible 9-10 seed.

6 Michigan State (16-12, 8-8, 4): Tom Izzo’s group has won 3 of 5 games with their losses coming to Ohio State and Purdue, but there isn’t a lot of comfort in East Lansing yet. Michigan State is still on the bubble and could finish as high as fourth if it sweeps the week with Iowa tonight and then wins what could be a NCAA tournament elimination game on Saturday in Ann Arbor. NCAA tournament projection: BUBBLE…IN right now, barely.

7 Northwestern (16-12, 6-11, 8): Looks like it’s going to be another year of Wait Till Next Year for the still NCAA tournament-less Wildcats. No chance for at-large bid with 11 Big Ten losses and no good non-conference wins, they have to hope for a huge run in the Big Ten tournament (i.e. winning it). NCAA tournament projection: NONE…likely NIT team.

8 Penn State (15-13, 8-9, 5): On senior night with a huge crowd in State College, Penn State couldn’t pull off another big home win. The loss likely extinguished any realistic at-large chances for a NCAA berth barring a run to the Big Ten title game. Tough way for Talor Battle to end his college career. NCAA tournament projection: OUT…for sure NIT team.

9 Iowa (10-18, 3-13, 10): The Hawkeyes have lost five in a row and with games against Michigan State and Purdue remaining, might not win again this season. But two of those games went to overtime (Wisconsin and Michigan) and Northwestern went to the final minute. Says more about the bottom two teams in the Big Ten that Iowa is ahead of them than anything about the Hawkeyes. NCAA tournament projection: NONE…might go to the CBI or no postseason.

10 Indiana (12-17, 3-13, 11): The Hoosiers are much like Iowa. They’ve lost six in a row and with Wisconsin and Illinois left might not win another game. They are the worst team in the Big Ten and it might not be close. The only reason they aren’t 11th is because of a massive collapse in Minneapolis. NCAA tournament projection: NONE…season should end with a Big Ten tournament loss.

11 Minnesota (17-11, 6-10, 9): It isn’t that Minnesota is the worst team in the Big Ten (it’s not). And it isn’t that the Gophers have no chance at the postseason (they do). But with no point guard, Minnesota has fallen apart. It can’t win close games and looks like it has little leadership. Minnesota has gone from semi-lock for the NCAA tournament to likely having to win out in the regular season and get some wins in Indianapolis to have a shot after dropping 7 of 8 games. With Northwestern and Penn State left on the schedule, it is possible but thus far, Minnesota doesn’t look capable of winning right now. NCAA tournament projection: OUT…right now in the NIT.

Correction: Due to a reporting error, Wisconsin cannot win the Big Ten title. The Badgers are actually locked into the No. 3 position in the Big Ten.

A loss to MSU makes Michigans record 18-13 and 8-10 regular season in Big Ten. Definately bubble needing to win a couple in B10 tourney to go to dance. Purdue, OSU and Wiscy are no dobt best teams but no way is OSU 2nd.
