Purdue forward JaJuan Johnson dominates and earns top star against Michigan

By Michael Rothstein

The Michigan basketball team thought it already faced a player like Purdue's JaJuan Johnson this season in Oakland's Keith Benson.

Not even close.

The Wolverines discovered this in a 80-57 blowout loss to Purdue in the Big Ten opener on Tuesday afternoon as Johnson hurt Michigan on the inside and the outside, on offense and on defense.

He was the obvious choice for the game's first star. Who joined him? Find out after the jump.

First star — JaJuan Johnson, Purdue When the senior All-American forward is making his shots from mid-range, he is one of the most complete players in the country. He hit from the inside, the outside and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line against the Wolverines. At 6-foot-10, when he picks-and-pops or makes a stepback, he’s deadly. He scored 22 points, had eight rebounds and three blocks on 6-of-16 shooting.

Second star — Ryne Smith, Purdue He wasn’t flashy, but when the junior guard from Toledo was open from 3-point range he took the shot. And made it. Smith his five of six 3-pointers and helped to spread Michigan’s defense as it couldn’t double on Johnson because of Smith. He didn’t do much else, statistically, but his shooting changed the game.

Third star — Stu Douglass, Michigan He picked up the rare start after Darius Morris was disciplined for a violation of Michigan core values, and he made the most of it. After struggling early, Douglass scored 13 points in 23-6 run that kept Michigan in the game in the first half. He was the only Wolverine in double figures and without him, Michigan could have trailed by 20 or more in the first half.

Three Stars Season Tally: Darius Morris, Michigan: 8 Jordan Morgan, Michigan: 4 Tim Hardaway Jr., Michigan: 4 Zack Novak, Michigan: 3 Evan Smotrycz, Michigan: 2 Stu Douglass, Michigan: 2 Jon Horford, Michigan: 1 Jeff Meyer, Michigan assistant coach: 1 Matt Vogrich, Michigan: 1 Rocko Holmes, Concordia: 1 Keith Wright, Harvard: 1 Landon Clement, North Carolina Central: 1 JaJuan Johnson, Purdue: 1 Ryne Smith, Purdue: 1 Scoop Jardine, Syracuse: 1 Kris Joseph, Syracuse: 1 Randy Culpepper, UTEP: 1 John Bohannon, UTEP: 1 The rims at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, N.J.: 1
