Mitch McGary says he'll decide next week; Michigan in his top three

By Nick Baumgardner

After staying quiet for a few weeks, consensus top-five national power forward prospect Mitch McGary has broken his silence.

He says he'll announce his college commitment next week, and the Michigan basketball program is on his short list.

"I can honestly say that right now I don't know where I"m going so anything you read that says I do isn't true," McGary wrote on his personal ESPN.com high school basketball blog Thursday. "At this point, I'm focusing on Florida, Duke and Michigan."

The 6-foot-10, 250-pound McGary is preparing for his final prep season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, and began his round of official visits in September with a trip to Ann Arbor for the Michigan football team's season-opener against Western Michigan.

McGary writes in his blog that the whole process has been "really stressful" and "it's been hard on my family."

He says he took some time to just be with family and friends to clear his head, and he says he's ready to make his choice.

McGary also said that previous candidates to land his services, North Carolina and Maryland, are now off his list. He also added that he intends to make his decision known through his personal ESPN blog.

"Obviously, I've got some great options," McGary wrote. "But this next week I'll really be doing a lot of thinking about what the perfect situation for me will be."

He's not going to Duke, their team is loaded and he'll probably stick around in college for a couple of years, which would put him on the bench behind Ryan Kelly at Duke and he'll be the type of player who needs to play immediately. What's really troubling is that Florida has jumped up higher on his list. Billy Donovan is known to get dirty to pick up hot recruits late out of nowhere so I hope this isn't a preview of what's to come. Not to mention Florida will have a huge spot at PF which would give McGary immediate play time. Don't underestimate Michigan. Sure, the odds are against them, but they're horrible in the paint and Horford nor Morgan would get the nod over a freshman McGary. Michigan has renovated their basketball program adding that beautiful little player development facility and vastly improved their basketball arena. The Wolverines are the underdogs but it would be the best fit for McGary. To disrespect Michigan comparing them to Duke's football team is atrocious. Michigan basketball has a rich history and are an up and coming program. But the odds are very much not in Michigan's favor. Then again, they rarely are.

I realize that Nick wants McGary to attend UM (and he very well may); but this is THE WORST, BIASED artcicle I have EVER read. Just to enlighten you, here are Mitch's other comments from the same interview: "I haven't talked to UNC lately so I don't know. THEY'REv STILL ON MY LIST THOUGH." "and I'M STILL LOOKING AT NORTH CAROLINA, but, like I said, I don't really know what's going on with their scholarship situation after their latest commitments." ...that's the rest of the story!

As a Michigan fan, I believe this kid is going to Duke. Michigan has nothing to match Duke, in terms of college basketball atleast. If he does go blue It will be like a 5 star quarterback commiting to Duke football over Michigan. Anyway, he would a great addition to Michigan if he came, but it is going to take a lot of work for Beilein to get him on our side

You may be right, but being a superstar at Michigan is not all bad.
