The Associated Press released its most recent rankings poll on Monday and Michigan is currently ranked No. 25 with 86 points. Teams are awarded 25 points for a first place vote through one point for a 25th place vote.
At 14-2, Michigan is off to its best start in program history under the direction of first-year coach Kim Barnes-Arico. Michigan beat Wisconsin 54-43 at the Crisler Center on Sunday to extend its winning streak to nine games, the longest since the 2001-02 team won 10 straight. The last time the Wolverines were ranked in the AP Top 25 was December 23, 2002. The Wolverines were No. 25 back then as well.
Michigan is the only team in this week's rankings not to have been ranked in the top 25 the week before, taking the place of Miami, who was previously ranked No. 24, but lost on Sunday to No. 18 Florida State, 86-65. Michigan has only played one ranked opponent this season, falling to No. 4 Duke back on Nov. 28. Michigan will face No. 8 Penn State (13-2) on Monday, Jan. 21. The Wolverines' next game is Thursday at Northwestern.

Finally, the women's team gets a little coverage here. Maybe now you'll start covering the games here on AnnArbor.Com. Sunday's game was a bit of a nail-biter. Wisconsin scored the first nine points of the game, and basically shut down Kate Thompson, U-M's leading scorer this year. They also played pretty good defense on Rachel Sheffer, too. U-M slowly, but surely chipped away at that lead, though. Perhaps the key play was the final play of the first half. Down five points, Jenny Ryan drove to the basket, picked up a foul, and somehow managed to scoop the ball in. She made the free throw, cutting the Wisconsin lead to two points at the half. That really shifted the momentum to U-M, and in the second half, U-M finally took the lead at about the 15:00 minute mark and lead the rest of the way. Jenny Ryan lead Michigan with 19 points, a career high for her. She also played great defense. She really won this game for Michigan.

Thanks, Pete. I hope you will continue to follow the team's progress throughout the season. Usually I have to go to mgoblue.com to get info on the women's sports but may be able to follow the lady wolverine basketball team's result here which will be convenient.

Too bad coach Borseth is not here to enjoy all his great efforts. His new team is off to an equally great start....only two losses also.

Congratulations to the team and coaching staff for this great accomplishment. For years this program has been called a "sleeping giant". With the new practice facility, updated Crisler, new coach and a wonderful senior class, the awakening is taking place.
