Michigan basketball on the bubble: Today's look at key games that could affect the Wolverines' chances

By Michael Rothstein

Darius Morris does his best to avoid it. During championship week, though, it is impossible to escape if you watch any sports on television.

NCAA tournament talk is everywhere.

“I let other people worry about that,” Morris said. “If coaches tell us that we’re in, I listen that we’re in, but if the TV is on and you’re watching ESPN and you happen to see it, I’m not going to ignore it.

“I don’t go out there searching for it because you might be disappointed.”

Thus far, Michigan has little reason for bracketology disappointment. Most brackets have Michigan in the 68-team field. For now.

Of course, the Wolverines know that can change, especially when the Big Ten starts for Michigan on Friday against Illinois.

“You kind of pay attention to it but it’s just fun to watch,” he said. “But what are you going to do about it. I’m not sitting here thinking, ‘We need to beat these people by so many points or we need these people to lose.’”

Nope, that’s the job of AnnArbor.com, which now presents today’s bubble and bracket watch.

RPI and SOS (courtesy of Statsheet.com): Michigan's RPI is 51, Strength of Schedule is 16.

Today’s bubble games, otherwise known as the Big 12 tournament

Oklahoma State vs. Nebraska: Both of these teams are likely out of the bubble picture, but a major run by one of them in the Big 12 tournament could put them back in. One of them will certainly be out of the NCAA tournament conversation after today. (ESPN3, 12:30 p.m.)

Iowa State vs. Colorado: The Buffaloes have flirted with being on-and-off the bubble for the past three weeks. Every big win is followed by a head-scratching loss. Again, that’s what most bubble teams are made of, especially this year. Colorado needs to beat Iowa State to stay in the NCAA conversation, though, because the Cyclones are nowhere near a tournament-level squad. (ESPN3, 3 p.m.)

Oklahoma vs. Baylor: The Bears have a bunch of talent, led by LaceDarius Dunn yet they have struggled, losing 4 of 5 down the stretch of the season. A loss against under-.500 Oklahoma would potentially knock them off the bubble, or at least below the gaggle of Big Ten teams for the time being. (ESPN3, 7 p.m.)

Other games of note

Northeast Final: Long Island is the favorite tonight against Robert Morris, which won the league a season ago. The Blackbirds, which once boasted an insanely high scoring offense in the late 1990s-early 2000s don’t have Richie Parker anymore but have a balanced attack led by Julian Boyd. If LIU doesn’t win, it grabs the automatic NIT berth given to league champions who don’t advance to the NCAAs. LIU has lost just once since Dec. 13.

Big Sky Final: Either Northern Colorado or Montana will lock up a bid tonight. Important because if Northern Colorado loses, yet another NIT berth disappears. (ESPN2, 9 p.m.)

Important results from last night:

Butler wins the Horizon: Bubble teams everywhere rejoiced when the Bulldogs beat Milwaukee, 59-44, to claim the Horizon League’s automatic berth. Milwaukee isn’t getting into the NCAAs as an at-large, so the Bulldogs opened up a bubble spot for someone.

Oakland wins the Summit: The Grizzlies weren’t getting an at-large if they lost to Oral Roberts in the league title game, but Oakland’s win might ever so slightly give Michigan an uptick in the RPI and strength of schedule since Michigan beat Oakland in December.

Marquette beats Providence: A potential bubble spot officially closed Wednesday when Marquette knocked off the Friars in the first round of the Big East tournament. While the Golden Eagles were likely in no matter what happened Tuesday, the win over Providence likely pushed them in for good. Or if not, their resume is better than Michigan’s.

Bowling Green won: This matters only because Michigan beat Bowling Green earlier this year so again, a small uptick in RPI and SOS is possible.

Bracketology

ESPN: Not updated. Still has Michigan as a No. 11 in Tucson against Vanderbilt.

Bracketology 101: Michigan is a No. 11 seed with potential opponents Kansas State, Cincinnati, Temple and Georgetown

CBS: Jerry Palm moves Michigan up to a No. 10 seed, playing CAA champion No. 7 Old Dominion in Tucson with a potential second-round meeting against No. 2 San Diego State.

SI.com: Andy Glockner keeps Michigan at a No. 11 seed in Washington, D.C. with a matchup against No. 6 Kansas State. Potential second-round matchup: Syracuse.

I think we need a good show against Illinois to seal a NCAA bid.

It is highly unlikely that Michigan would end up with a possible second round against Syracuse. From everything I've read the NCAA makes its best attempt at avoiding repeats in the first 2 rounds and Michigan played Syracuse early on this season. Personally I'd love to see a potential SDSU-Michigan game in round 2.

The Wolverines are in regardless of Friday's outcome or whatever else could potentially happen around the NCAA. A number 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament (with a first round bye) is not going to be left out. Michigan would beat Vanderbilt on a neutral court, GO BLUE!
