Michigan basketball offers scholarship to Illinois prospect Max Bielfeldt

By Michael Rothstein

Michigan basketball has one scholarship to give for the Class of the 2011, and it looks like the Wolverines have targeted their first prospect.

Peoria Notre Dame forward Max Bielfeldt, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward confirmed to AnnArbor.com he has received a scholarship offer from Michigan.

Bielfeldt's offer was initially reported by the Peoria Journal-Star.

Bielfeldt has also been offered by Illinois, where his family has significant ties. The athletic administration building on campus is named the Bielfeldt Athletic Administration Building after, you guessed it, his family.

According to Maxpreps.com, Bielfeldt is averaging 22.2 points a game this year for undefeated Notre Dame.

I would have to agree with Michboy40. It's kind of like a top prospect who would have, say the last name "Schembechler" and decides to play for Illinois. As Paul Harvey would, "and now for the rest of the story"? Wonder what Coach B knows that we don't?

This one does not make sense unless Coach B knows something that is not public info. Very interesting.

I'm a classmate of Max's and have been privileged to watch him mature as a player. He does not have the prototypical measurable height/weight for his position, but what he does have is the intangible things that you can't measure. He has fantastic touch around the rim, great body control when boxing out(our team cannot grab a board without him), and great strength to finish down low. I also would not use this video to pass judgement on him: that was a poor overall team performance from last year. This year, he has gone up against some elite bigs and completely shut them down (i.e. Nnaana Egwu in the Washington, Il Tournament of Champions). He is a smart, physical player who, if redshirted a year to develop more of a basketball body, could become a major contributor by the end of his tenure at Michigan, if he ends up there. And since that video I believe he has lost some weight and is looking much faster up and down the court.

You can never have too many big guys. Michigan is going to be a juuust little bit guard/SF-heavy next year.
