Michigan basketball adds another top 100 recruit for 2013, point guard Derrick Walton

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Michigan basketball program has reportedly landed its second top 100 recruit for the class of 2013 in as many days.

Point guard Derrick Walton, a rising junior at Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods, announced his non-binding verbal commitment Monday, one day after 6-foot-6 wing Zak Irvin informed coach John Beilein he'd become a Wolverine.

Inside Prep Sports and UMHoops.com were among the first to report Walton's decision. Irvin quickly welcomed him to the class on Twitter.

Irvin and Walton join fellow 2013 recruits Austin Hatch, a 6-6 shooting guard from Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mark Donnal, a 6-9 forward from Whitehouse, Ohio. Both accepted scholarships on June 13 -- the first day Beilein and his staff offered them to 2013 prospects.

Scout.com (77th), Rivals.com (88th) and ESPN (92nd) all rate Walton among the top 100 recruits in the nation in his class.

They will follow a two-member 2012 recruiting class of Glenn Robinson III and Nick Stauskas to Ann Arbor.

UMHoops.com's Dylan Burkhardt observed Walton at the King James Classic in April and reported that "Walton played a tremendous floor game. He is extremely quick but does a great job of playing under control. He’s a pass-first guard that thrived pushing the ball in transition but also found his teammates in the half court offense."

Coach Beilein and his staff are doing a great job identifying really good players early and establishing a positive relationship with them. And it's really paying off now. The players Michigan is getting now, have improved quite a lot over when Beilein first took over. If we have a successful season this year, combined with bringing the new basketball facility on-line, you'll see things get even better recruiting-wise.

What are you talking about Leftovers? He is a top 100 recruit and 4 stars. According to rivals he is the best player out of the 4 players that have verbally committed to Michigan for the 2013 class. I wouldn't call him leftovers by any means.
